If these were normal times, I’d sit down with my friend Steve Beaven over breakfast or a beer to congratulate him on the publication of his book, “We Will Rise: A True Story of Tragedy and Resurrection in the American Heartland.” But with socializing options greatly reduced during the coronavirus pandemic, this online shout-out will have to do. The book came out in January and, once I finally got to it last week, I devoured it. S hort version: Loved the book — as I expected I would. And why is that? Well, not only do I know Steve as a talented reporter and writer from our days together at The Oregonian, but the book’s subject allows him to write from the heart as someone who grew up in the very place where this tragedy occurred. Anyone who follows college basketball, as I do, knows the sad story of the University of . In the 1960s and 1970s, they were a small-college powerhouse, collecting five national championships under an old-school coach who also doubled as a math professor at the small private college in . On December 13, 1977, a plane carrying the entire team and its coach crashed just after takeoff from the local airport, killing everyone aboard and breaking the hearts of everyone in the community. From those smoldering ruins emerged a remarkable story of rebirth and resilience. A new, young coach with big ambitions, who had never worked at the Division I level, quickly patched together a team of castoffs, walk-ons and prospects and, just four seasons later, led the Purple Aces to the NCAA’s March Madness tournament, a showcase of the nation’s top 48 teams. My friend Steve was 15 years old, a high school freshman, when the team qualified for the tournament. He lived just two blocks from the arena where the Purple Aces played their home games. Who better than Steve, a rabid basketball fan and native of Evansville, to tell this inspiring story? He tells it well. From prologue to epilogue and 19 chapters in between, Steve displays the fruits of his extensive research, excellent reporting and stylish writing, along with the secret sauce — an insider’s knowledge of the history, culture and demographics of his hometown, highlighted by an understanding of what the university and its team meant to the community. Additionally, his perspectives on basketball, as a fan and a journalist, are essential in bringing the on- and off-court dramas to life, whether it’s writing a character sketch of a player or coach or recreating the sense of hope among fans during that initial 1982 NCAA tournament game against Marquette. The Hoosier State, as it’s known, is crazy about basketball, and that love for the sport extends to Evanville, just across the Ohio River from . The city was a factory town that built fighter planes during World War II and later, thanks to Whirlpool, dubbed itself the “Refrigerator Capital of the World.” It’s against this blue-collar, working-class backdrop that Steve describes the rise of the Purple Aces and the team’s high hopes in moving up to Division I for the 1977-78 season. The plane crash devastated the community. but also brought it together in support of a rebuilding process of the team that was nothing short of stunning. There were tensions, resentments, uncertainties and missteps along the way, and Steve gets into those too. Some of the strongest writing is nestled in the epilogue, but I’ll refrain from quoting any of it lest I give away any of the story. I’ll leave it with this: Steve Beaven has written a fine book with the detachment of a professional observer and the civic pride of a native son who grew up with the Aces. I’m looking forward to the next time I see Steve. I want an autograph. We Will Rise | Book and Author Talk with Steve Beaven. Author Steve Beaven will discuss his new book, WE WILL RISE: A True Story of Tragedy and Resurrection in the American Heartland on Friday, January 3 at 6pm at Indy Reads. For two decades the University of Evansville dominated small-college basketball, winning five national titles under the oversight of their charismatic coach, Arad McCutchan, a local icon more famous than the mayor or the governor. When McCutchan retired in 1977, a young coach named Bobby Watson took over as the Purple Aces moved up to Division I. But on the foggy night of December 13, 1977, the unthinkable happened: the entire University of Evansville basketball team and Coach Watson were killed when a plane crashed upon takeoff at the local airport. The tragedy seemed insurmountable, a devastating blow to the identity of a fading factory town. But as the entire community mourned, the university hired Dick Walters, a hotshot young coach from the Chicago area, who promised to rebuild the cherished institution. Assembling a team of castoffs, walk-ons, and overachievers, Walters restored the legacy of the team and its fans, and led the Aces to the NCAA tournament at the very moment that Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan were making basketball a global phenomenon. WE WILL RISE: A True Story of Tragedy and Resurrection in the American Heartland (Little A; January 1, 2020), by journalist Steve Beaven, tells the inspiring true story of loss and triumph. It is a tribute to those who were lost and to those who carried on, a rich and powerful story of an underdog team and its fans and the unbreakable spirit of community. We Will Rise. Advance Praise. “This story exemplifies the resilience of the American heartland, where God-fearing people bear unspeakable pain and tragedy with grace and depth most of us cannot comprehend. You can almost hear the squeaking of high-top sneakers on the floor, the ear-splitting chirp of whistles and the quiet, gut-wrenching sobs of those who grieve. We Will Rise joins the pantheon of great sports books for one simple reason: it has very little to do with sports.” —Steve Eubanks, New York Times bestselling author of All American: Two Young Men, the 2001 Army-Navy Game and the War They Fought in Iraq. “Riveting and very personal…Steven Beaven has written the last word on the tragic crash of the University of Evansville basketball team. A must read.” —Bob Kravitz, senior staff writer for The Athletic and former columnist for The Indianapolis Star. “ We Will Rise is an ode to spirit, to hope, to somehow carrying on after the greatest of heartbreaks.
