THE NATURE OF HELLENISTIC DOMESTIC SCULPTURE IN ITS CULTURAL AND SPATIAL CONTEXTS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Craig I. Hardiman, B.Comm., B.A., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. Mark D. Fullerton, Advisor Dr. Timothy J. McNiven _______________________________ Advisor Dr. Stephen V. Tracy Graduate Program in the History of Art Copyright by Craig I. Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans.

ORIGINAL PAPER Abstract The existing cultural interconnection between Iran and North India, which existed and developed over a long period of time, is known today as “Indo‐Iranian” or “Indo‐Persian”, which could be applied to the region, culture, literature, weapons and other spheres of intercultural interference. The cultural cooperation between these two countries was bilateral and marked by trade routes. This paper is aimed at analyzing the interrelation, similarities and differences between the martial and military cultures of India and Persia. More precisely, the article describes the field of individual training in military skills, methods of their acquisition and retention, as well as the usage of the related weapons. For this purpose, we carried out a comparative analysis based on historical sources as well as on contemporary literature on the topic. First, the paper focuses on general principles and weapon traditions in both cultures. The next section deals with a description of some techniques of Persian swordsmanship as described in Persian manuscripts. The next part describes some aspects of Indian swordsmanship. Then the last part describes some similarities and differences related to techniques of swordsmanship in both traditions. However, one should stress that although there are many extant Persian manuscripts on warfare and fighting techniques, no related Indian manuscripts have been found so far.

So You Think High Chaparral’s sire Sadler’s Wells is a member of the GOODY TWO SHOES family. His brother FAIRY KING and three-quarter brother NUREYEV are always desirable reinforcements for Sadler’s Wells and are already working with So You Think. Other members which would enhance this line include NORTHERN METEOR, VAL DE LOIR, RIDAN, THATCHING, GEIGER COUNTER, YEATS, PERUGINO, REFORM and OPEN DAY. So You Think’s Group 2 winner Gold Rush is out of a Nureyev line mare, as is Group 3 winner Think Bleue, while Listed winners Global Thinking and So Si Bon carry Nureyev in other sectors of their dams’ pedigrees. Group 3 winner Higher Ground is out of an ENCOSTA DE LAGO (by Fairy King) mare. Sadler’s Wells is bred on a Nearctic/Hail To Reason cross, a pattern which is desirably reversed in the pedigree of RED RANSOM. Tights, damsire of So You Think, is by Nijinsky II. He is a key member of the very influential TORPENHOW family. Other family members such as REDOUTE’S CHOICE, AL MAHER,THE MINSTREL, HURRICANE SKY, XAAR, UMATILLA, MASTERCLASS, NEW REGENT, EL GRAN SENOR, TRY MY BEST (sire of LAST TYCOON), SPINNING WORLD and GIELGUD in mares will be very well received. So You Think’s Group 1 winners D’Argento and Inference, and Listed winner Fasika are out of Redoute’s Choice mares; Listed winner Quick Thinker is out of an Al Maher mare; and Listed winner Global Thinking’s second damsire is Spinning World, demonstrating that So You Think is responding very well to this family reinforcement.
