    Freeform quad-based kirigami CAIGUI JIANG, KAUST FLORIAN RIST, KAUST, TU Wien HELMUT POTTMANN, KAUST, TU Wien JOHANNES WALLNER, TU Graz Kirigami, the traditional Japanese art of paper cutting and folding generalizes origami and has initiated new research in material science as well as graph- ics. In this paper we use its capabilities to perform geometric modeling with corrugated surface representations possessing an isometric unfolding into a planar domain after appropriate cuts are made. We initialize our box-based kirigami structures from orthogonal networks of curves, compute a irst approximation of their unfolding via mappings between meshes, and com- plete the process by global optimization. Besides the modeling capabilities we also study the interesting geometry of special kirigami structures from the theoretical side. This experimental paper strives to relate unfoldable checkerboard arrangements of boxes to principal meshes, to the transforma- tion theory of discrete diferential geometry, and to a version of the Gauss theorema egregium. Zadpoor Department of Biomechanical Engineering, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Mekelweg 2, Delft 2628CD, The Netherlands Transforming flat sheets into three-dimensional structures has emerged as an exciting manufacturing paradigm on a broad range of length scales. Among other advantages, this technique permits the use of functionality-inducing planar processes on flat starting materials, which after shape-shifting, result in a unique combination of macro-scale geometry and surface topography. Fabricating arbitrarily complex three-dimensional geometries requires the ability to change the intrinsic curvature of initially flat structures, while simultaneously limiting material distortion to not disturb the surface features. The centuries-old art forms of origami and kirigami could offer elegant solutions, involving only folding and cutting to transform flat papers into complex geometries. Although such techniques are limited by an inherent developability constraint, the rational design of the crease and cut patterns enables the shape-shifting of (nearly) inextensible sheets into geometries with apparent intrinsic curvature. Here, we review recent origami and kirigami techniques that can be used for this purpose, discuss their underlying mechanisms, and create physical models to demonstrate and compare their feasibility. Moreover, we highlight practical aspects that are relevant in the development of advanced materials with these techniques. Finally, we provide an outlook on future applications that could benefit from origami and kirigami to create intrinsically curved surfaces. Intricate examples with icosahedral symmetry are presented. These consist purely of interlocked flat pieces of paper, with no folding and no adhesives. Introduction Kirigami refers to the art of paper cutting. Traditionally a single sheet of paper is cut with scissors or a knife to make a figurative or abstract form. [8, 10] The visual focus may be either the cut paper or the remaining “negative space”. Sometimes folding is involved, as in “pop-up cards”. [1] For symmetric designs, the paper is often folded before cutting then unfolded, e.g., the well-known paper snowflakes with 6-fold symmetry. Kirigami shares the root gami, meaning paper, with the better-known Japanese art of folding paper, origami. [7] In modular origami, identical paper modules are folded and assembled into a larger symmetric structure. [3] This paper introduces the term modular kirigami for symmetric assemblages of cut paper. Origami, from ‘ori’ meaning folding, and ‘kami’ meaning paper is the art of paper folding. Kirigami, from ‘kiri’ meaning cutting, is the art of the combination of paper cutting and paper folding. In this dissertation, Origami and kirigami concepts were successively utilized in making stretchable lithium ion batteries and three-dimensional (3D) silicon structure which both provide excellent mechanical characteristics. First chapter of this dissertation demonstrates an origami Lituium-ion battery (LIB) that can be deformed at an unprecedented high level, including folding, bending and twisting. Deformability at the system-level is enabled using rigid origami, which prescribes a crease pattern such that the materials making the origami pattern do not experience large strain. The origami battery is fabricated through slurry coating of electrodes onto paper current collectors, packaging in standard materials, followed by folding using the Miura pattern. The resulting origami battery achieves significant linear and areal deformability, large twistability, and bendability. Second chapter of this dissertation demonstrates stretchable LIBs using the concept of kirigami. The designated kirigami patterns have been discovered and implemented to achieve great stretchability (over 150%) to LIBs that are produced by standardized battery manufacturing. It is shown that fracture due to cutting and folding is suppressed by plastic rolling, which provides kirigami LIBs excellent electrochemical and mechanical characteristics.
