SKYLINE STAMPEDE PAGE 27 1961 Skyline Stampede Trophies and National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association The Skyline Stampede is the largest and oldest intercollegiate rodeo in the nation. Looking back through the years, CSU Rodeo Association was one of the founding members of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association known as the NIRA. This association, designed to promote the sport of rodeo among America's colleges and universities, is modeled after rodeo's professional cowboy's association, the RCA, and has adopted many of the rules and practices governing this organization. For convenience of competition, the country has been divided into five regions, these being: the Great Plains Region, the Rocky Mountain Region, the Southwestern Region, the West Coast Region and the Southern Region. A member of the largest region, the Great Plains Region, CSU sends a 6-man, 4-alternate team and a 3-member girl's team to each of the region's 10 approved rodeos. Competition is keen and much diligent practice precludes an opportunity to travel as a member of the school's rodeo team. During the past year, a split with in the national association over certain governing procedures has created a certain amount of unrest and inconvenience for the member schools. However, with the ironing out of difficulties between the two factions and a rejoining of all the clubs at the RCA convention, January, 1961, the NIRA has emerged a stronger and more enthusiastic organization than ever, ready for a full season of rodeos across these United States of America . . . . promoting better sportsmanship and horsemanship for America's youth .... in truly American sport.

Thanks, Jim, for all the time spent and hard work that you have done to make our program bigger and better!

DR. JAMES A. SCOTT, DVW

Combine the proficiency of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with artistic talent, individu ality and ambition. Dr. James Scott, better known to CSU students as Dr. Jim, possesses these traits and many other outstanding traits. This is a versatile man; a man more concerned with the lives of other people than with his own life and one of Colorado State University's out standing personalities. Dr. Jim was the second son born in a family of four children. His parents have a ranch at Kiowa, Colorado, and through his ranch background he attained his desire to be a veter inarian. Dr. Jim received his Bachelor of Science Degree in March of 1955 and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in June of 1957. Following graduation, the Veterinary Service at Great Falls, Montana, became the first clin ical practice for Dr. Jim. He returned to CSU in July of 1958 to assist in CSU 's extensive research program on Beef Cattle Insemination and to take command of the Mobile Bull Evaluation Lab oratory. Dr. Jim has attained the status of Assistant Professor of Clinics and Surgery at CSU School of Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of the Board of Control of Colorado Veterinary Asso ciation and a member of the Board of Directors for the Study of Breeding Soundness in Bulls. Sketching has always been one of his primary interests, but it remained a hobby until 1954. His drawings and sketchings of rodeo and rodeo people are his primary interest. He has had an extensive background in rodeo, having contested in Saddle Bronc Riding, Bare Back Riding, Bull Riding and Steer Wrestling. Clowning became a specialty until a serious accident, which resulted in a broken neck and months of recuperation, now prohibits him from active participation. Prior to the accident, clowning was one of the ways in which he put himself through college. He began to experiment with oil painting, and a hobby became a second source of income for educational purposes. The sale of his first rodeo action painting was in 1954 and came quite by accident. Since that time oil painting has become his favorite pastime. He is an active member of the Poudre Valley Art League, Past Vice President of the League, and has been in charge of the annual art exhibit. A showing of Dr. Jim's paintings was held in September of 1959 at the United States National Bank Building in the Mile High Center in Denver. Paintings of rodeo action and rodeo personalities were supplemented with landscape scenes and character portraits. In addition to his busy and demanding schedule as a veterinarian, Dr. Jim has found time to do illustrations for several of the west's foremost western magazines and papers. He has done illustrations for the National Dude Rancher, The Western Horseman, The Rodeo Sports News and for individual rodeo committees. His paintings and sketchings are now done by commis sion only. Charlie Russell , one of the West's most outstanding artists, writers, and philosophers, is one of his particular interests. A talented artist, coupled with imagination, creative ability and an interest in classical and semi-classical music. An intensive interest in photography and wood carving, plus an un tiring source of energy and willingness produce Dr. James Scott, illustrator of the 1961, Skyline Stampede Program.
