special meeting was called by the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University, and the meeting convened at 2:06 p.m., Wednesday, July 7, 2010, in the Dirksen Conference Room, Room 4175E, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, 801 North Rutledge, Springfield, Illinois. The meeting was called to order by Chair Tedrick. The following members of the Board were physically present: Mr. Roger Tedrick, Chair of the SIU Board of Trustees and Southern Illinois University Foundation Board of Directors Executive Committee member Mr. John Simmons, Secretary Mr. Frank William Bonan II Mr. Jeff Harrison Dr. Keith Sanders Mr. Alex Vansaghi Mr. Stephen Wigginton The following members of the Board were absent: Dr. Ed Hightower, Vice-Chair Ms. Marquita Wiley A quorum was physically present. Luke Timothy Johnson, professor of theology at Emory University in Atlanta, was scheduled to give a lecture at the center on April 20, but Belleville Diocese Bishop Edward K. Addressing a crowd of about 50 professors, annuitants and community members, State Rep. Naomi Jakobsson promoted the adop- tion of a progressive income tax in Illinois, which would require an amendment to the state constitution. Illinois currently applies a flat tax where all income levels have an equal tax. A progressive tax proposes tax on income to be measured on a graduated rate, meaning lower rates would apply to lower income levels, and higher rates would apply to higher income levels.

    EMERITUS & ANNUITANT NEWSLETTER A Publication of the SIUC Emeritus and Annuitant Association Volume 2010, Number 2 August 2010 SIUC EAA to host SUAA regional meeting in September full line up of SUAA officers and staff await those who attend the SUAA Regional Meeting that the SIUC EAA chapter A will host in conjunction with its Fall General Membership Meeting on Friday, September 24. The theme of the upcoming regional meeting is Surviving the Illinois Fiscal Crisis. Speakers scheduled to participate include Leo Welch, SUAA president; Linda Brookhart, SUAA Executive Director; Dick Lockhart, SUAA lobbyist; and Bukola Bello, from the Illinois Retirement Security Initiative. Several local legislators and candidates for the legislature have also been invited to appear. All SIUC EAA members are encouraged to attend this rare opportunity to acquire information about the state of our retirement Linda Brookhart system. Also invited to the meeting are SUAA members from all SUAA Executive southern Illinois community colleges and SIU Edwardsville. In addition, current college and university employees are encouraged to attend as they are most likely to be impacted by the state pension crisis. The program will provide ample opportunity for questions and comments from the audience. Bukola Bello The meeting will be held at Giant City State Park Lodge on September 24, and will begin at 10 IL Retirement Security Initiative a.m. There will be a Giant City Lodge lunch at noon, and the afternoon session will last until 3:00. The registration form for this event is included in this newsletter. The cost is $12.00. This is a great opportunity to hear and discuss the impact of the Illinois fiscal crisis on our pension and retirement system with the knowledgeable people in Springfield who are speaking for us.
