Today’s date had been circled on my calendar for over two months in advance of this event, and in my excitement I couldn’t fall asleep. I finally passed out at around 6 a.m. and subsequently slept through my alarm going off at 9 a.m. As I shuffled my way to the classroom, both excited and scared, it was obvious the impending discussion could drastically change my agnostic outlook on the reality I currently found myself in. When I finally reached the door and thrust it open, I stood stupefied in the doorway as the faces of Carlo Filice, Muhammad, and Shankara stared back at me. “It’s about time you got here. I was beginning to run out of funny jokes, and I’ve got a million of them,” Filice said slyly. “That’s what you think. Thank Allah we can finally get started, I was starting to lose it after being subjected to such humorless material,” added a frustrated Muhammad. I collected myself as best I could and addressed the matter at hand. “Thanks again everyone for coming. I have called you three here today, as you know, for a discussion on what the true purpose of life is. As a young student who currently struggles to make sense of the world around me, I have adhered to a form of loose agnosticism to keep me sane and grounded. Having said this, I was hoping to glean something from this discussion today. Seeing as how you gentlemen are some of the most knowledgeable individuals available on Eastern Philosophy, I am eager to hear what you have to say on this topic.” “I’ll kick things off,” Muhammad

University of Canterbury -199 0 - Annushka i Tatyana. acknowledging the assistance of Dr. Denis Walker abstract This thesis presents a study of dandyism with reference to Oscar Wilde and Dorian Gray in the form of a comparative analysis. It provides a critique of the social and cultural theories of dandyism of Ellen Moers, Sima Godfrey, Carter Ratcliff, in relation to the dandyfied views of Charles Baudelaire and Barbey D'Aurevilly. It establishes a philosophical tradition of dandyism, bearing on the positions of Jacques Derrida, and on Jean Baudrillard's characterization of postmodernity. Using the framework of Derridean hauntology, I posit that certain contemporary performances of masculinity engage with discourses of dandyism, and that such performances open up a space for the potential expression of a masculine identity founded on an alterity to hegemonic gender norms. The basis for this alterity derives from the philosophical underpinnings of dandyism as articulated by its most prominent nineteenth century theorizers. As a result, I divide my study into two halves: the first focuses on a close reading of texts by Balzac, d’Aurevilly, and Baudelaire; the second centers on three case studies illustrating the spectral nature of dandiacal performance in relationship to contemporary masculinity. Chapter One establishes the framework for my argument, articulating the way in which both nineteenth century French philosophical dandyism and Derrida’s concept of hauntology, particularly his “three things of the thing” (mourning, language, and work), serves to structure the rest of the study. Chapters, Two, Three, and Four, which constitute Part I, provide close readings of texts by Balzac, d’Aurevilly, and Baudelaire, respectively. Chapters Five, Six, and Seven form Part II, and consist of individual case studies examining the spectral traces of dandyism in performances of masculinity by three contemporary celebrities.

Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.

Created by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (1938-1997), the genre blends scathing anti-establishment lyrics with Yoruba traditional music and Western forms, particularly jazz. Fela’s ideological dictum: “Music is the Weapon of the Future,” encapsulates his view of music as an oppositional tool, his enactment of which led to frequent violent confrontations with the Nigerian state. Throughout his lifetime, Fela held hegemonic sway over afrobeat’s stylistic and ideological trajectories. However, following his death, the genre has witnessed a global upsurge with protégés emerging in New York City, San Francisco, Paris, London and other cultural capitals of the world. In my dissertation, I chronicle afrobeat’s transnational networks and discuss processes of stylistic and ideological affiliation through which such networks have emerged.
