  • 'The Thin Black Line': Black Comedy and Its Descent from Subversive
1 The Thin Black Line Black comedy and its descent from subversive comic provocation to mainstream inglorious offence By Chris Beck A thesis submitted for the Master of Arts (Research) Swinburne University 2017 1 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines whether black comedy still lampoons influential institutions and probes social mores with sharp satire and strong language or simply aims to offend for its own sake. It questions whether the freedom of speech that comedians in the 1960s advocated to defend their social and political subversion is now assumed, as a right, by comedians for the less edifying practice of humiliating people and targeting the vulnerable. Black comedy in the 1960s questioned our attitudes to politics, religious power, and sexuality. While black comedy In the 21st Century addresses complex issues of social importance it tends to do so through humiliation, deception and mockery. Black comedy is inspired by politics, protest, provocation and the broad array of experiences that could be described as the human condition. The Thin Black Line explores the intersections between social acceptability and social outrage. This study concentrates on prolific exponents of black comedy and treats the terms dark and black comedy as interchangeable. This thesis argues the political agitation that characterised much of dark comedy in the 1960s and 1970s has been largely replaced in the 21st Century by what might be termed superficial abuse, in that the comedy does not seek to right perceived injustices or expose prejudice, but aims to do little more than cause offence. The common element in the comedy being examined is that it created controversy by taking on taboo subjects, including child abuse and the sensitivity of minorities, such as people with a disability and various religions.

  • A Case Study of Production Processes on Television Police Drama “The Bill”
The London School of Economics and Political Science Watching the Cops: a case study of production processes on television police drama “The Bill” Marianne Colbran A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, September 2011 Page 1 of 312 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others (in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it). The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without my prior written consent. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis consists of 88,000 words. Page 2 of 312 Abstract This thesis examines the process of storytelling on television police drama, The Bill. It explores how factors such as commercial imperatives, working processes and artistic constraints affected representation of the police. The study argues that, in the early days of the show, stories originated with the freelance writers and were based on research and observation of police work. Representation of the police was favourable, partly due to the ideological views of the makers and partly due to the format: stories had to be resolved within a half-hour timeslot, which militated against writers being able to tell stories about issues such as racism, sexism and corruption.

  • Cringe Comedy, Benign Masochism, and Not-So-Benign Violations
Article Leviathan: Interdisciplinary Journal in English No. 2, 13-31 Painfully Funny: © The Journal Editors 2018 Reprints and permissions: http://ojs.statsbiblioteket.dk/index.php/lev Cringe Comedy, DOI: 10.7146/lev.v0i2.104693 Recommendation: Mathias Clasen ([email protected]) Benign Masochism, Human Nature and Pop Culture and Not-So-Benign Violations Marc Hye-Knudsen ABSTRACT Cringe comedies differ from traditional embarrassment humour by being explicitly aimed at evoking not just the positive emotion of amusement but also the decidedly negative emotion of vicarious embarrassment (i.e. ‘cringe’) in their audiences. Drawing on Warren and McGraw’s benign violation theory of humour and the concept of benign masochism, I offer a biocultural account of how they achieve this effect and why audiences counterintuitively seem to find it enjoyable. I argue that whereas a farce like Fawlty Towers (1975-1979) employs psychological distance in order to render its embarrassing violations thoroughly benign and thus singularly conducive to amusement, cringe comedies like The Office (2001-2003) and The Inbetweeners (2008-2010) comparatively decrease psychological distance in order also to evoke high levels of vicarious embarrassment. Finally, I argue that audiences find benignly masochistic pleasure in such cringe-inducing media because they offer vicarious experiences with social worst-case scenarios. Keywords : cringe comedy; benign violation; benign masochism; vicarious embarrassment; humour; evolutionary theory; Fawlty Towers; The Office; The Inbetweeners; Human Nature and Pop Culture Corresponding author: Marc Hye-Knudsen ([email protected]) Department of English, Aarhus University 14 Introduction In recent years, one of the stranger trends in British television has been the rise of cringe comedy.
