Why bother, when it seems so obvious? Look at Aratus and Nicander, whose model was Hesiod, and nothing more need be said. Nonetheless, that will be my aim here. There have of course been many useful studies of classical didactic poetry,² some of which offer various classifications (see below); yet I have long felt that insufficient attention has been paid, both by the ancients themselves and by us today, to the development of the poems called didactic, although modern termi- nology and the ancients are not in complete agreement as to what constitutes a Bibliography at end. Some earlier poets did in fact write in more than one genre, but could have boasted of it only in particular terms, i.e., by specifying “I write poems of type X and Y,” as we see at the end of the Symposium 223d ὁμολογεῖναὐτοὺςτοῦαὐτοῦἀνδρὸςεἶναι κωμῳδίαν καὶ τραγῳδίαν ἐπίστασθαι ποιεῖν, καὶ τὸν τέχνῃ τραγῳδοποιὸν ὄντα <καὶ> κωμῳδοποιὸνεἶναι (“They agreed that the same man can know how to compose both comedy and tragedy, and that the skilled tragic poet is also a skilled writer of comedies”)—to which one can add that Plato has himself done this within this very dialogue, adding satyrography, as Bacon (1959) shows. -

Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

Homer and Hesiod Abstract One of the most frustrating aspects of Homeric studies is that so little literary material outside the Homeric corpus itself survives to enhance our understanding of the cultural landscape of the period. Recent scholarship suggests that a large and diverse poetic tradition lay behind the figure we refer to as "Homer," but little of it survives. Indeed we have little continuous written Greek for another century. The one exception is Hesiod, who composed two extant poems, the Theogony and Works and Days, and possibly several others, including the Shield of Heracles and the Catalogue of Women. As we shall see, while Hesiodic poetry was not occupied specifically with heroic themes, it was part of the same formal tradition of epic, sharing with Homer key metrical, dialectal, and dictional features. -

WALKER Department of Entomology, University of Florida, Gainesville The most recent listing of the Oecanthinae of the world is in Volume 2 of Kirby's Syno.nymic Catalogtie of Orthopte~a(1906, p. 72-76). Since then the number of described species has doubled and studies of the spe- cies in Africa (Chopard 1932), the United States (T. Walker 1962a, 1963), and Latin America (T. Walker 1967) have revealed new synonymies. The list below sumniarizes present knowledge of oecanthine taxonomy, nornen- clature, and geographic distribution. Keys to the species of Oecanthinae in specific areas are in the studies listed above and in Tarbinsky (1932, USSR), Chopard (1936, Ceylon), and Chopard (1951, Australia). Little has been published on the biology of Oecanthinae with the exception of Oecaizthlts pellzlcens of Europe (Chopard 1938, M.-C. Busnel 1954, M.-C. and R.-G. Busnel 1954) and various U. S. species (Fulton 1915, 1925, 1926a, 1926b; T. Walker 1957, 1962a, 196213, 1963). The following conventions are used in the checkl~st: After the word Type, a single asterisk ( ) means that the condition and place of deposit of the type specimen were confirmed by correspondence. A double asterisk (' ') means that I have examined the type specimen. Data concerning the present status of the type specimen are separated by a semi-colon from data on the place and date of collection and the collector. Bradford Welles VEN MORE than Homer, one is advised to approach Hesiod with E caution. This is a paradox, because of Hesiod, the man, we seem to know much. The Iliad and Odyssey tell us nothing directly of Homer's name or experiences, but the Theogony (v.22) states that Hesiod-naming him-had been taught song by the Muses while tending his flocks on Mt. Helicon; and this seems to be a trustworthy fact, whether you think it means that Hesiod wrote the Works and not the Theogony (in view of the citation in the third person) or accept that he was the author of both. I Since ancient poets were not apt to name contemporaries or rivals, the latter may be the safer choice, and so we have the name, real or symbolic, the association with Helicon, and the profession of a shepherd. Sheep represented wealth, and were often tended by young men of good family, hand some and attractive to goddesses. Such boys might well fashion for themselves flutes and learn to play them. There wasn't much else to do while the sheep grazed, after all; but Hesiod became an aoidos, a singer of tales, and this was a profession in itself. The bard was a teacher of the people, rich in learning, whether this had been acquired by divine inspiration or otherwise. Shepherds in antiquity often went on to greater things. -

Apollodoros’s Portrait of Neaira 161 THE MAKING OF A PROSTITUTE: APOLLODOROS’S PORTRAIT OF NEAIRA1 ALLISON GLAZEBROOK Apollodoros’s account of the life of Neaira ([Demosthenes] 59.16–49) is the most extensive narrative extant on a historical woman from the classical period. The recent publication of Debra Hamel’s book, Trying Neaira: The True Story of a Courtesan’s Scandalous Life in Ancient Greece (2003), has made the famous speech against Neaira and its recent scholarship accessible to a popular audience. The strength of Hamel’s work lies in the political, legal, and social context she provides for the speech, along with her ques- tioning of the various claims Apollodoros makes about Neaira’s “children” and her conclusion that he never proves beyond a doubt that Neaira has been acting as Stephanos’s wife. But does Apollodoros offer “the true story” of Neaira’s life as a courtesan, as Hamel’s title so boldly claims?2 The narrative detail of the speech and the testimony of witnesses convince Hamel (2003.156) that Apollodoros accurately portrays the events of Neaira’s early life. While one function of such witnesses was to attest to the veracity of a speaker’s comments, as in the modern day, their second 1A version of this paper was originally presented at the APA annual meeting in San Diego (2001). Homer: "The Homeric Hymns", "The Epigrams of Homer" (both attributed to Homer). Various: Fragments of the Epic Cycle (parts of which are sometimes attributed to Homer), fragments of other epic poems attributed to Homer, "The Battle of Frogs and Mice", and "The Contest of Homer and Hesiod". This file contains only that portion of the book in English; Greek texts are excluded. Where Greek characters appear in the original English text, transcription in CAPITALS is substituted. The Book of Enoch was a kind of midrash, or expansion, on the account of the Sons of God marrying the daughters of men, as found in Genesis chapter 6. The Theogony and Works and Days invokes the " Pierian Muses" to sing of their father Zeus and his control of the fates of mankind. I think most people - even those who have no interest at all in reading books - have heard of Homer, even if only for his yellow namesake. Kudos to you Hesiod. Hesiod, the father of Greek didactic poetry, probably flourished during the 8th century BC. Get two oxen, bulls of nine years; for their strength is unspent and they are in the prime of their age: they are best for work. Hesiod also speaks to Perses directly, urging him to abandon his schemes and thenceforth to gain his livelihood through strenuous and persistent work.
