Sometimes Jesse tries to think of her dad And the way that he looked and the fun times they had Or the jokes that he knew or the songs he could sing And she finds that she just can't remember some things. 3 And she feels so sad It just aches in her heart So she asks Mom and Elmo If they'll help her start. And because it's too much To remember it all She begins with one thing That is special and small. 4 5 She goes to her dresser and opens her drawer And takes out a hat that her daddy once wore 6 And sometimes she laughs and sometimes she cries As just for one moment she thinks of his eyes. 7 Then she walks just like Daddy Straight down the hall And goes to the yard to try Something else small. 8 She lays in the grass And looks up at the sky And with eyes just like Daddy's She watches birds fly. 9 Then she tosses a ball, and she draws with some chalk And pretends she's a bear, and skips a small rock And she follows an ant, and she sits and she swings Even though all of these seem like small things ... 10 Somehow they help her to think of her dad And the way that he was and the fun times they had. She remembers his hands and his face and his hair And in some small, small way it feels like he's there. 11 Then Jesse heads in as she hums a small song And pretends that her daddy is singing along And then Jesse snuggles because that's the small way That Daddy and she ended each single day. 12.

Wer nicht fragt, bleibt dumm.“ Mit diesem Titellied wurde die deutsche SESAMSTRASSE am 8. Januar 1973 zum ersten Mal ausgestrahlt. Erfunden worden war die Sendung jedoch in den USA von dem nicht kommerziellen Unternehmen Children’s Television Workshop. Ein Team von Psychologen, Pädagogen, Werbefachleuten, Ärzten und Fernsehredakteuren hatte damals untersucht, was Kinder am Fernsehen besonders fasziniert. Das Ergebnis: Tiere, Puppen, Cartoons, Slapstick-Komik, Tempo, Witz und Prominente als Wissensvermittler. Auf der Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse wurde SESAME STREET entwickelt. Zielgruppe waren vor allem Kinder aus unterprivilegierten Bevölkerungsschichten, die man bereits im Vorschulalter fördern wollte. In Deutschland wurde die Einführung der innovativen Serie kontrovers diskutiert. In den Anfangsjahren strahlten der NDR und andere dritte Programme synchronisierte Fassungen der amerikanischen Originalserie aus. Dabei wurde auf Amerikanismen verzichtet, und immer häufiger wurden deutsche Einzelbeiträge – beispielsweise zum Thema Alphabet – in die Folgen eingefügt. 1978 begann eine neue Ära der SESAMSTRASSE: Als Kulisse für die Rahmenhandlung entstand eine neue Straße mit Wohnhäusern und einem Marktstand. Why the Cookie Monster should never become the Veggie Monster… A Classical Argument “Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?” Hearing the lyrics and the tune seems nostalgic and reminds us of simpler times: our childhood. While Sesame Street may only be intended for three or four year olds, Jim Henson’s ragtag group of puppets has made a mark on America’s pop culture over the years. We see fashion retailers selling t-shirts with the face of Elmo or Cookie Monster upon them and we have chuckled at the various parody videos of Sesame Street characters on YouTube. However, after such a long legacy, can you imagine if our beloved characters were changed? What if your own child was subjected to the image of Veggie Monster instead of Cookie Monster? In light of recent struggle to fight childhood obesity, many have advocated to change the Cookie Monster character to the Veggie Monster in order to encourage more children to eat healthy. I propose, while their intention may be well mannered, Sesame Street, and more specifically Cookie Monster is not the right avenue to express these opinions and the Cookie Monster should remain the Cookie Monster. While we have only discussed the general popularity of Sesame Street, we have yet to even discuss Cookie Monster, himself. Cookie Monster with his voracious appetite proves to be adorable and often, provides comic relief on the show. Cookie Monster along with his pals Big Bird and Elmo has become one of the most popular icons of the show.
