That’s right, all ogres are destined to live lonely, miserable lives being chased by torch-wielding mobs who want to kill them. So the young Shrek set off, and eventually found a patch of swampland far away from the world that despised him. Many years pass, and the little ogre grows into a very big ogre, who has learned to love the solitude and privacy of his wonderfully stinky swamp (Big Bright Beautiful World.) Unfortunately, Shrek’s quiet little life is turned upside down when a pack of distraught Fairy Tale Creatures are dumped on his precious land. Pinocchio and his ragtag crew of pigs, witches and bears, lament their sorry fate, and explain that they’ve been banished from the Kingdom of Duloc by the evil Lord Farquaad for being freakishly different from everyone else (Story Of My Life.) Left with no choice, the grumpy ogre sets off left to right Jacob Ming-Trent to give that egotistical zealot a piece of his mind, and to Adam Riegler hopefully get his swamp back, exactly as it was.

  • Transmedia Muppets: the Possibilities of Performer Narratives
Volume 5, Issue 2 September 2012 Transmedia Muppets: The Possibilities of Performer Narratives AARON CALBREATH-FRASIEUR, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT This article examines how the Muppets franchise engages with transmedia narratives, their stories moving fluidly between television, film, comics, the internet and more. Rather than highlight the complexity Henry Jenkins (2006), Elizabeth Evans (2011) and others associate with transmedia, an examination of the Muppets offers insight into a mechanism that allows for simpler coherent connection between texts. The Muppets’ ongoing performer narrative challenges the prevailing understanding of transmedia storytelling. As performative characters (singers, actors, performance artists), any text concerned with Muppets, even those in which they act as other characters, becomes part of an overarching Muppet narrative. A high degree of self-reflexivity further supports transmediality, as most Muppet texts contain references to that text as a performance by the Muppets. Thus the comic Muppet Robin Hood and the film Muppet Treasure Island continue the story of the Muppets as further insight is gained into the characters' personalities and ongoing performance history. Examining different iterations of the Muppets franchise illuminates the ramifications of performer narratives for transmedia storytelling. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, franchise, narrative, Muppets, multi-platform For over fifty-five years the Muppets have been appearing in media texts. They began on local television but have spread across most contemporary mediums, with many of these texts part of the over-arching, ongoing Muppet story. This article explores an alternative framework for defining one form of transmedia storytelling. This model suggests a complication in the understanding of transmedia storytelling put forward by Henry Jenkins (2006) and Elizabeth Evans (2011).

  • Recommended Talking Points
RECOMMENDED TALKING POINTS “What is SHREK THE MUSICAL?” The official title of the show is SHREK THE MUSICAL. SHREK THE MUSICAL is an entirely new musical based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek!, as well as the Oscar® winning DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, the first chapter of the Shrek movie series. SHREK THE MUSICAL looks backwards at all the fairy tale traditions we grew up on: a hero (a big, green, ill-tempered ogre), a beautiful princess (who is not all she appears to be), and a dastardly villain (with some obvious shortcomings) and takes great fun turning all their storytelling conventions upside-down and inside-out (and on their ear). “How did the musical come about?” Sam Mendes, the British director and producer, was a big fan of the first film, and he suggested the idea of creating a musical to DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg, around the time the second film was in production. Now, the musical is being produced by DreamWorks Theatricals (Bill Damaschke, President) and Neal Street Productions, Ltd (principals Sam Mendes and Caro Newling). “How does the new musical fit into the Shrek pantheon?” The story of the musical follows the events and characters of the first Shrek feature film, which won the first-ever Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature. In SHREK THE MUSICAL, the creative team will go deeper into the background and story of Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey and the lovable collection of everyone’s favorite Fairy-Tale characters. SHREK THE MUSICAL will feature a completely original score by one the theatre’s most eclectic composers, Jeanine Tesori, working in theatre today.

  • “The Secret Silk” with Stephen Schwartz and John Tartaglia Onboard Royal Princess
Princess Cruises Celebrates The Premiere Of “The Secret Silk” With Stephen Schwartz and John Tartaglia Onboard Royal Princess March 1, 2018 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (March 1, 2018) – Princess Cruises celebrated the premiere of "The Secret Silk," the newest offering from it's first-of-its-kind partnership with Stephen Schwartz, the Oscar-, Grammy- and Tony Award-winning composer of "Wicked," "Godspell," and "Pippin." Joining Schwartz aboard Royal Princess for the premiere was the Tony Award nominated director/creator John Tartaglia ("Avenue Q," "Shrek"). The Secret Silk is a story of an Asian folkloric tale with a contemporary spin, featuring inspired performances through the use of music, dance, puppetry and special effects. Adapted from the ancient fable "The Grateful Crane," the story features Lan, a beautiful, selfless young woman who possesses a magical gift, secretly creating brilliant silk fabrics. Audiences will be introduced to original life-size puppetry from Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and an original song, "Sing to the Sky," both created exclusively for the production. Overseeing the creative development of four entertainment shows for Princess Cruises, Schwartz brings together an illustrious team of Broadway talent to support the productions through direction and design. "The Secret Silk" is created and directed by Tartaglia and in addition to Royal Princess, will be rolled out on Island Princess for the 2018 summer Alaska season, and Diamond Princess in winter 2018, sailing year-round Japan. Additional creative team talent includes choreography by Shannon Lewis ("Fosse"), scenic design by Tony Award nominee Anna Louizos ("School of Rock"), costumes by Tony Award winner Clint Ramos ("Eclipsed"), and music direction from Brad Ellis ("Glee").

The Muppets (2011. Comedy. Rated PG. Directed by James Bobin) A Muppet fanatic and two humans in a budding relationship mobilize the Muppets, now scattered all over the world, to help save the Muppets’ beloved theater from being torn down. Songs, laughter tears ensue. Starring Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Steve Whitmire, Eric Jacobsen, David Goelz, Bill Barretta. The scenes of Kermit and friends driving across the country are in Tahoe (standing in for the snowy Rocky Mountains) and rural Lincoln in Western Placer County along Wise Road and various cross streets (standing in as the Midwest). Notice the beautiful, green fields along the roadways. \ Some of the road views can be seen from inside Kermit’s car, looking out. Other scenes feature the exterior of the car driving down county roads. The Muppets shot here in part because Placer County diverse terrain is a good substitute for many parts of the US; many other productions have done the same. This was the second time Kermit shot in Placer County. He filmed here for a few days in 2006, for a Superbowl commercial for the Ford Escape Hybrid (at Euchre Bar Tail Head/Iron Point near Alta, CA). Phenomenon (1996. Romantic fantasy. Rated PG. Directed by Jon Turteltaub) An amiable ordinary man of modest ambitions in a small town is inexplicably transformed into a genius. Starring John Travolta, Kyra Sedgewick, Forest Whitaker, and Robert Duvall. 90% of this film was shot in around Auburn, CA in 1995. Some of the locations include the Gold Country Fairgrounds, Machado’s Orchards, and various businesses in Old Town Auburn.

  • My Name Is Mary Hildebrand Nagler, and I Am a Professional Puppeteer
My name is Mary Hildebrand Nagler, and I am a professional Puppeteer. I made my first puppet at 10 years old in girls Scouts and have had a life long interest in the art form. I used to hurry home from High School to watch Sesame street, and longed to work for that innovative company someday. In College at Santa Clara University, as a theater major. I was a frustrated actor. I was too often relegated to back stage because I could make things, so when the opportunity came up to do a Punch and Judy show for the school Renaissance fair I volunteered! It was great performing live and puppetry encompassed all I loved about theater. I finally got to act, in fact I got to play all the characters, make the scenery and props , all the costumes and even write the plays! I had found my calling. For years I worked performing a repertoire of 9 shows geared for a young audience, including some classic tales with a twist: Red Riding Hood, which taught the wolf to use his manners and say please, Harlequin and the Gift of many Colors, about the power of friendship to cross social boundaries and The Reluctant Dragon, a great story about the dangers of prejudice. I left Santa Clara University after two years when I was accepted in to Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus Clown School. I graduated with a degree in Buffoonery and landed a one year contract to travel with the Greatest Show on Earth. Several of my parts in the show involved puppets there too! After my year with the circus I got married had two sons, got divorced and went back to school! I have a Bachelor of fine arts degree from Sonoma State University, in sculpture and painting.
