Regina owes its existence to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). This town site was chosen to replace Battleford as the capital of the Northwest Territories, after the CPR abandoned its plans to build the country's first transcontinental railway line along a more northerly route. The new settlement was named Regina upon the arrival of the first train in 1882. The name was chosen to honour Queen Victoria, the reigning monarch at the time. Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of Governor General Marquis of Lorne suggested the name "Regina." The official transfer of the capital from Battleford to Regina occurred in 1883. It was soon followed by the relocation of the North West Mounted Police headquarters from Fort Walsh in the Cypress Hills.
