SEASON REPORTS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, 1916.

WESTERN PROVINCE.

K a l u t a r a D is t r ic t . Paddy : the maha cultivation is still going on in some places. . Dry grain : there is no dry grain cultivation at present. Other products : (1) fruit and vegetables were scarce, except in the totamunes, where there was a fair supply. (2) Flowering of coconuts was fair. (3) The month’s crop of coconuts is estimated at 2,920,000 nuts. Prices of staple products : imported rice, Rs. 4 ; 25 to Rs. 7 per bushel ; country rice, in Pasdun korale east, Rs. 0 per bushel; coconuts, Rs. 35 to Rs. 80 per 1,000 nuts. Remarks on harvest prospects generally : nothing can be said at present of the com ing harvest. Rainfall at Kalutara : total, 8 ’ 13 in. ; average, ' 26 in. Health of people : good, except in the totamunes, where cliickenpox, measles, dysentery, and fever were prevalent. Health of cattle : good. ______

CENTRAL PROVINCE. '

' K a n d y D is t r ic t . Paddy cultivation : maha fields are being transplanted and weeded. Yala : nil. Dry grain cultivation : kurakkan chenas are being sown for maha season. Prospects of coconut cultivation : flowering of coconuts has been fair. The estimated produce during the month is: Yatinuwara, 33,000; Harispattu, 42,000 ; Pata Hewaheta, 485,040. Crop hasnot been ascertained in other divisions. Rainfall : satisfactory. Health of people : good. Health of cattle : good. Dry grains : chenas in Walapane are being sown ; in Uda Hewaheta they are ready for sowing. Health of population : good. There were a few cases of dysentery in Gangapalata korale of Uda Hewaheta. Health of cattle : good. There was an outbreak of rinderpest at Brookside. Twenty-four bulls were attacked with the disease, out of which 16 died and 7 recovered. Prices of staple articles: paddy, Rs. 2 to Rs. 2'50 per bushel; kurakkan, Rs. 2'50 per bushel; Indian com , Rs. 2'50 per bushel ; rice (Coast), Rs. 5 '7 5 toR s. 7'50 per bushel; rice (country), Rs. 6 to Rs. 6 ■ 75 per bushel.

SOUTHERN PROVINCE.
