3 August 2017 Wolverhampton built Defiant is highlight of Open Cockpits Evening Date: 15-16 September 2017 Time: 6.00pm to 9.00pm Cost: £12.50 per person The Wolverhampton built, Second World War British Battle of Britain fighter aircraft, Boulton Paul Defiant Mk1 will be one of the highlights at the forthcoming ‘Open Cockpits Evening’ taking place at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford on 15-16 September 2017. The Boulton Paul Defiant Mk 1 joined the aircraft display at Cosford only a few short months ago and with just 300 tickets available per evening, organisers are anticipating the event will be hugely popular with aviation fans eager to get the first close look inside (no internal access). The aircraft is the last surviving example of its kind, built by Boulton Paul at its Pendeford, Wolverhampton factory in 1938. This two-seat turret fighter, operated with mixed fortunes during the Battle of Britain period but found its niche as a night fighter during 1940-42. The RAF Museum’s example, serial number N1671 was operated by the newly formed No 307 (Polish) Squadron RAF, who became operational in December 1940. It was painted in its all black night fighter colour scheme the following January and carried out 15 patrols before moving to No 285 (Anti-aircraft Co- Operation) Squadron in June 1942, its last operational user. RAF Museum Cosford Curator, Al McLean said: “After four decades on display at the RAF Museum London, the sole surviving intact Defiant example of its type was transferred to Cosford for aviation fans in the Midlands to enjoy.

FREE BLACKBURN SKUA AND ROC PDF Matthew Willis | 128 pages | 19 May 2014 | Mushroom Model Publications | 9788389450449 | English | Poland Blackburn Roc - Wikipedia Blackburn Roc Mk. Blackburn Skua and Roc concept seemed to have failed, generally speaking. Especially the Defiant, seeing intense action during the Battle of Britain, gained more success on enemy fighters, as long as they did not expect a fighter-like aircraft to have such a deadly sting in their backs. The Blackburn Roc saw much less action than the Defiant, only a few encounters with the enemy over the channel and during the evacuation of Dunkirk have been Blackburn Skua and Roc. Obviously the Roc is a constructive offspring of the Blackburn Skua. The bent wingtips have been straightened and the belly did not need the shallow Blackburn Skua and Roc for the Skuas bomb load any more. Instead, a four gun turret was installed- the same turret which was used in the Boulton Paul Defiant, by the way. Being clearly outclassed in combat, the Roc soon was sent into the second row, being used for training or for target tug duties. My model depicts a Blackburn Roc of No. The Special Hobby kit of the Blackburn Roc nearly brought me to my limits. Literally every part had to be adapted, sanded, stretched- or had to be scratched finally. After two years of moving the SH Roc from the workbench to Blackburn Skua and Roc dustbin and back again, I am really happy I got it finally done to a passably end. If you are interested in the challenging building process, please have a look here on Scalemates:.

  • The 80Th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain
Supplement to The Aero Historian September 2020 The 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain There were more Hawker Hurricanes than Supermarine Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. Hurricane Mk I, P2923, VY-R, flown by Pilot Officer Albert G Lewis of No 85 Squadron, landing at Castle Camps, Debden's satellite airfield, July 1940 (Imperial War Museum). Compiled by Brian Lockstone © AHSNZ | SEPTEMBER 2020 “The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the world war by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”1 Rt Hon W S Churchill MP, House of Commons, 20 August 1940 Today the Battle of Britain is no longer officially commemorated in New Zealand on 15 September. Fought between 10 July and 31 October 1940, it remains one of the most defining and significant events of the Second World War, saving Britain from the risk of invasion and providing a springboard to launch on occupied Europe the assault which brought the war to a bitter end in May 1945. At the time of writing there was but one surviving aircrew member left. Research by one of New Zealand’s best aviation historians affirms that of the 3000 pilots and air gunners who served during the battle, 135 were New Zealanders.

Sergeant Josef Frantz and mechanic Louis Quenaut were in a Voisin III biplane returning from a bombing mission along the Belgian border. En route home, they engaged a German Aviatik B observation plane over Johchery-sur-Vesle near Reims. The French crew immediately attacked, making at least two runs. From that point, accounts vary. Reportedly, Quenault’s pedestal-mounted Hotchkiss machine gun suffered a malfunction, prompting the German observer, 31-year- old Lt. Fritz von Zangen, to return fi re with a rifl e. Quenault then unlimbered his own rifl e and shot down Sgt. Wilhelm Schlicting and von Zangen. The Aviatik dived to earth, killing the crew in the fi rst recorded aerial victory. In the 3:00 a.m. darkness, two 4th Fighter Wing F-15E Strike Eagles searched for Scud missiles near the Syrian border. However, Capt. Tim Bennett and his wingman learned of Iraqi helicopters airborne, and got permission from their controller to investigate. Bennett’s weapon systems operator, Capt. Daniel Bakke, illuminated the grounded enemy chopper (it looked like a Hind), and Bennett released his laser- guided bomb. As the LGB tracked to the target, the helo lifted off and Bennett doubted that the bomb would hit.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AVIATION MUSEUM SIGNIFICANT AVIATOR PROFILES WING COMMANDER ALEXANDER “NOEL” CONSTANTINE One of “The Few”, Fighter ‘Ace’, Air Fighter Tactician and WWII Survivor. AND THE BOULTON PAUL DEFIANT Two Almost Forgotten Heroes of WWII. On a recent visit to the Hunt Field airstrip, situated alongside the Onkaparinga River at Seaford Meadows, South Australia, I had a fascinating chat with SA aviator, Geoff Constantine, who still flies his 1957 Cessna 180, VH-CXA, which he has owned now for about 47 years. Geoff had a long career as an Ag pilot, working in Australia and overseas. The conversation moved to talking about Geoff’s “Uncle Noel” who he said flew Boulton Paul Defiants with RAF No. 141 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. Geoff Constantine still had his uncle’s two RAF logbooks, which he kindly loaned to us for scanning, thereby allowing copies to be retained by the South Australian Aviation Museum. The logbooks contain a wealth of information for researchers, detailing Noel Constantine’s RAF flying career, between his first training flight Wing Commander on 17 May 1938 and his last recorded flight with the RAF, at the Alexander "Noel” Constantine rank of Wing Commander, on 9 November 1945, which was approximately two months after the official Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) on 15 August 1945. During Noel Constantine’s RAF service, he flew 41 different types of aircraft, including Ansons, Blenheims, Battles, Defiants, Havocs, Beaufighters, Hudsons, Catalinas, Thunderbolts, Mosquitos, Hurricanes and most of the Spitfire variants up to XIV. Aircraft flown even included two Japanese transport aircraft, namely a Mitsubishi Ki-57 “Topsy” and a Tachikawa Ki-54 “Hickory.” His logbook shows these Japanese aircraft were flown by Noel Constantine, about 5-6 weeks after V-J Day, both with Japanese crews.

Night Falls, Fighters Fly: The Development and Evolution Of Navy Night Fighters In World War II Abstract It is nearly impossible to overestimate the importance of radar in the Second World War. This piece of Allied technology was one which the Axis were never able to truly overcome. This paper will comprehensively explore how radar was used in the development of U.S. Navy carrier-borne night fighters in World War II. It seeks not just to demonstrate the effectiveness with which night fighters ot use, but also the understudied and under-appreciated technological accomplishment that was night fighting. Whereas other works on the subject serve largely as roadmaps or timelines detailing the key moments in night fighter history, this paper differs in that it will attempt to fill in those gaps yb including the historical context, technological development, and the evolving tactical implementation of night fighters throughout the war.
