Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2015. ix + 206 pp. Softcover, US$22.00. Ian Boxall is associate professor of New Testament at The Catholic University of America. He previously taught New Testament at Chichester Theological College and the University of Oxford. He has published a number of books, including The Revelation of St John (Black’s New Testament Commentaries) and Patmos in the Reception History of the Apocalypse (Oxford University Press). Discovering Matthew has twelve substantial chapters followed by a short concluding chapter. As such, it would make an appropriate undergraduate textbook. Chapter 1 contains a historical survey of the status of the Gospel and the shift in critical scholarship from Matthean to Markan priority. This is followed by a description of what Boxall deems to be a number of “contradictory elements” within the Gospel (e.g., universalism vs. particularism, “Jewish” and “anti-Jewish” statements, mercy vs. judgment). These tensions are left unresolved, thus setting the agenda for the rest of the book. The chapter concludes with an overview of the Gospel’s plot. The second chapter presents various critical approaches used to interpret Matthew. Boxall argues that the quest for univocal meaning characteristic of both historical criticism, with its emphasis on authorial intention and original context, and narrative criticism, with its focus on the meaning of the text, contrasts with both precritical and postmodern approaches. Precritical patristic exegesis recognized multiple levels of meaning in the text, whether literal, spiritual, or allegorical. Boxall suggests that this approach rings true with postmodern expectations that texts embody a plethora of meanings. In chapter three, Boxall discusses background questions, such as authorship, dating, structure, textual variants, and auditory experience. He follows the majority of critical Matthean scholarship in accepting Markan priority and rejecting the apostle

Moon, Ph.D., served as chair of the Church History Department in the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University (2002- 2016) and as editor of Andrews University Seminary Studies (2000-2009). He co-edited The Ellen G. White Encyclopedia (Review and Herald, 2013) and co- authored The Trinity (Review and Herald, 2002). His dissertation, W. C. White and Ellen G. White: The Relationship between the Prophet and Her Son, was published by Andrews University Press in 1993. Article Title: White, Mary Ellen Kelsey (1857–1890) Author: Jerry A. Moon Mary (Kelsey) White, the first wife of William C. White, served as an editor, treasurer, and missionary. Early Life Mary Ellen Kelsey was born April 20, 1857, in Leroy Township near Battle Creek, Michigan. Mary’s mother, Eunice Rebecca [nee Bushnell] (1820-1906), was born in Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA. At the age of 13 Eunice witnessed the meteoric shower of 1833, and by 18 she had qualified herself as a public school teacher. Mary’s father, Asa Post H. After their marriage, July 4, 1838, the Kelseys moved west to Leroy Township, Michigan, where Asa operated a saw mill. Under the ministry of Joseph Bates, the Kelseys became Sabbathkeepers in 1852 and charter members of the first Seventh-day Adventist church in Battle Creek, Michigan.

    The Idea of Medieval Heresy in Early Modern France

    The Idea of Medieval Heresy in Early Modern France Bethany Hume PhD University of York History September 2019 2 Abstract This thesis responds to the historiographical focus on the trope of the Albigensians and Waldensians within sixteenth-century confessional polemic. It supports a shift away from the consideration of medieval heresy in early modern historical writing merely as literary topoi of the French Wars of Religion. Instead, it argues for a more detailed examination of the medieval heretical and inquisitorial sources used within seventeenth-century French intellectual culture and religious polemic. It does this by examining the context of the Doat Commission (1663-1670), which transcribed a collection of inquisition registers from Languedoc, 1235-44. Jean de Doat (c.1600-1683), President of the Chambre des Comptes of the parlement of Pau from 1646, was charged by royal commission to the south of France to copy documents of interest to the Crown. This thesis aims to explore the Doat Commission within the wider context of ideas on medieval heresy in seventeenth-century France. The periodization “medieval” is extremely broad and incorporates many forms of heresy throughout Europe. As such, the scope of this thesis surveys how thirteenth-century heretics, namely the Albigensians and Waldensians, were portrayed in historical narrative in the 1600s. The field of study that this thesis hopes to contribute to includes the growth of historical interest in medieval heresy and its repression, and the search for original sources by seventeenth-century savants. By exploring the ideas of medieval heresy espoused by different intellectual networks it becomes clear that early modern European thought on medieval heresy informed antiquarianism, historical writing, and ideas of justice and persecution, as well as shaping confessional identity.
