  • The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films Versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt
The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt (I am always interested in updates/additions to the document. Please email: steve at updown dot org dot uk) This is a comparison of the Laurel and Hardy silent films as presented on the 21-DVD box set ("Kirch") from Universal (in the UK) versus "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" DVD set ("Lost") from Image Entertainment (formerly available in the US). The former restorations were carried out for the German Kirch Group, and supervised by Richard Bann. The latter were carried out by Michael Agee on behalf of Richard Feiner & Co. As well as the UK 21-DVD box set, the Kirch Group copies also form the basis of other releases from Universal: in Spain, in the Benelux countries, in France, in Italy, and in the Scandinavian countries; and also the releases from Kinowelt in Germany. For the most part, the basic copies used are the same in these releases, although there are slight differences in bitrate and the amount of sharpening applied to the picture. Also some titles here and there seem to have had some digital cleanup applied for their Continental releases (see "Habeus Corpus" and "Sons of the Desert" on Kinowelt for example). Please note that the “Lost” films reviewed here are from the original “The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy” release (a private initiative by the latter-day Hal Roach Studios before being made more widely available through Image Entertainment) and not the botched half-assed private attempt by Michael Agee to re-release these films circa 2010 (of which few people, having already paid the money, eventually managed to get copies).

  • Knockabout and Slapstick: Violence and Laughter in Nineteenth-Century Popular Theatre and Early Film
Knockabout and Slapstick: Violence and Laughter in Nineteenth-Century Popular Theatre and Early Film by Paul Michael Walter Babiak A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies University of Toronto ©Copyright by Paul Michael Walter Babiak, 2015 Knockabout and Slapstick: Violence and Laughter in Nineteenth-Century Popular Theatre and Early Film Paul Michael Walter Babiak Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This thesis examines laughter that attends violent physical comedy: the knockabout acts of the nineteenth-century variety theatres, and their putative descendants, the slapstick films of the early twentieth-century cinema. It attempts a comparative functional analysis of knockabout acts and their counterparts in slapstick film. In Chapter 1 of this thesis I outline the obstacles to this inquiry and the means I took to overcome them; in Chapter 2, I distinguish the periods when knockabout and slapstick each formed the dominant paradigm for physical comedy, and give an overview of the critical changes in the social context that separate them. In Chapter 3, I trace the gradual development of comedy films throughout the early cinema period, from the “comics” of 1900 to 1907, through the “rough house” films of the transitional era, to the emergence of the new genre in 1911-1914. ii Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 present my comparative analyses of the workings of four representative

From Gary Logsted: “Brothers, fellow Sons of the Desert: I am thrilled to announce that the Albuquerque Busy Bodies tent (Oasis 29) is planning to present a bid for our 2022 convention at this year’s June gathering. I do believe New Mexico would prove an interesting and fun place to hold the event, and I hope to garner your support.” A special tip of the derby goes to Dean Cartier and his 30 YEARS as our East correspondent. See his last column and Going Bye-Bye! report in Tent News. Please welcome Henry “Butch” Sorenson as the new Eastern reporter. • The Representation of the Ku Klux Klan in Mainstream American Cinema (1988-2016)
The Representation of the Ku Klux Klan in Mainstream American Cinema (1988-2016) Thesis Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Philip Wintle MA, AFHEA Department of History of Art and Film University of Leicester September 2019 Phil Wintle The Representation of the Ku Klux Klan in Mainstream American Cinema (1988- 2016) The Ku Klux Klan are America’s most notorious terrorist organisation. In the 1920s membership to the Klan numbered several million, partly resulting from the success of The Birth of a Nation (1915). In this period of Klan popularity, Hollywood utilised their iconography for box office success. In the contemporary age Klan membership has diminished, yet the Klan image continues to be regularly depicted in American film. My research assesses the function of the Klan in contemporary cinema, looking at their representation between 1988 and 2016 to explain the longevity of their depiction in a period of social irrelevance. The shifting representation of the Klan offers a unique case study in demonstrating the changing attitudes Hollywood has to race and racism. In this thesis, I argue that the Klan have been used in films to paradoxically downplay issues of racism. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Klan were presented as a white ‘Other’ to whom racism is isolated. This ‘Othering’ drives melodramatic narratives of white conflict in films such as Mississippi Burning (1988) and A Time to Kill (1996). The melodramatic simplicity of the Klan image is later accentuated in comedy films between 1999 and 2013. The comedic depiction of the Klan has often been ignored in existing literature on the Klan’s representation in film; this is a significant oversight, as comedy has kept the Klan image within public consciousness during this period.
