Main areas of work since last report Outcomes / Achievements

Youth Café Youth café continues to run on a Monday night in Upper Beeding. We have seen a drop in numbers lately and have been delivering flyers and working on an advertising drive to get more young people along. We would particularly like to see the younger end year 9 pupils.

We currently have two young people working putting together Youth Neighbourhood plan a youth survey to go out following the neighbourhood plan. We have now had two meetings and the young people have completed writing the survey really to be tested before distributing. The key areas they felt were important were housing, community and transport and so have focused on these.

Youth Voice It is hoped that following the youth neighbourhood plan a new youth voice group can be established starting with the young people involved in writing the questionnaire. Emma has been approached by The Steyning Downlands Scheme to start a new Youth Vision group for young peoples input, as well as The Community partnership who wish to gather a group of young people to give input and participate into their work. It is hoped that these different groups can be one in the same and bring together a youth council for the area. Emma has been in touch with a pupil of Steyning Grammar school who has just been elected Member of Youth Parliament for East Arun, Adur Worthing and Member of Youth Cabinet for Steyning and . To get this group up and running and feed into the wider youth parliament and youth voice networks.

Emma continues to sit on the Steering group for The Steyning Steyning Dowlands Scheme Downland Scheme to focus on new ways to include and work with young people, on the 30th of March Emma and Maria attended the SDS information evening with a stall displaying all the youth work lead by SAYS taking place in the area. Emma spoke at the event about ways in which the schemes were working with local young people and future plans to increase this.

Volunteer Recruitment & Training We have gained another 2 volunteers to cover sickness and holidays, but are looking for another regular volunteer for Thursday nights. We are offering training in Safeguarding and Signposting for staff and volunteers on the 25th of June.

Emma has now been trained to use the Holistix program which co ordinates early help plans for families

Maria has attended training in further Youth Work Skills and will be completing her first aid training in a few weeks.

Cuthman Based Youth Clubs Clubs continue to run with reasonable numbers of young people attending (30-40 young people per week). Junior and Senior Clubs on Tuesday’s and All Age on Thursday. We have been supporting a number of young people through their exams and have provided goodie bags for all our young people doing GCSE’s with advice on how to avoid exam stress, notebooks, sweets, stress balls etc.

Trips and events Thorpe Park – During the Inset day for Steyning Grammar on the 1st of May Emma took a small group of young people ages 12-13 on a trip to Thorpe Park. The trip was welcomed by parents balancing work commitments for the day.

Stars and Songs - On Friday the 27th of March Emma organised an evening of Stargazing and Songs at the Star Inn with Ellie Gloster from The Steyning Downlands Scheme. We had fantastic views of the moon using telescopes in the beer garden and 5 young people performed to a delighted audience. Following the success of the evening Stella the Landlady of The Star has invited Emma to take up a monthly slot showcasing young performers. Currently we are discussing the capacity to take on such a commitment, but this may be something that is developed in the future. Bowling and Laser quest - On the 2nd of April we took a group of 12 young people on a trip bowling and laser quest in .

Go Karting - On Tuesday the 9th of June, 8 boys from our junior youth club will be going on a trip Go Karting at Brooklands in Worthing.

SDS Acoustic - Auditions for SDS Acoustic will be taking place on Thursday the 4th of June, we have already had a number of interested enquiries and suspect there to be a good uptake like last year. The gig itself will take place on Sat the 4th of July and once again we will be working with a stage crew of young people with regards to sound and lighting.

Bramber Castle – Unfortunately we are unable to hold an event at present within the grounds of , we hope that this will change in the future but look for alternatives in the area.

Beeding and Bramber Showcase - Emma attending the Beeding and Bramber showcase event at Upper Beeding Village hall on Sat the 9th of May to talk to the community about the work that SAYS is doing in the local area.

Oasis - Emma has been involved with delivering lessons in SGS Schools Work with Oasis Pregnancy Crisis Centre teaching young people about how babies develop during pregnancy and the options available for young people should they find themselves pregnant.

Mentoring - Emma is currently seeing 5 young people on a weekly basis referred from SGS. There have been 17 young people referred to date. With a new group focusing on managing anger. On going work with the school continues and we are in the process of starting a girls small group session.

Mocktail Apprentice Project - Having secured the Mocktail apprentice project for SGS Church street site, the Mocktail event that took place on the 11th of March was a great success! (See attachments for learning outcomes) Emma has met with the winning team “Hex on the beach” and the pupils are looking forward to representing their school at the Grand Finale at South Lodge on Friday the 5th of June.

Alcohol and legal highs awareness lessons – Emma and team have been delivered lessons to all year 11 pupils on the health risks and dangers of drinking too much alcohol and teaching about the dangers of legal highs on the 27th of Feb and the 6th of March. Following this Emma and Dann (HM’s Substance misuse manager) are working on delivering a workshop with a group of Local young people particularly looking at the misuse of Meow Meow and Cannabis.

Arts Award – Emma is currently supporting one of the music teachers at SGS to asses two male students for their bronze arts award.

Saxon Weld - We have been awarded £870 by Saxon Weald and Funding bids and grants have purchased 3 iPad minis, these are already being used and enjoyed by the young people who attend activities.

LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, transgender and Working with a young person from the LGBT community from Questioning) Upper Beeding we are starting a new monthly meeting for young people in the local area. The first meeting will be taking place on Wednesday the 1st of July. We have also recruited PC Charlene Pearson who will be attending each month; Charlene has specific responsibilities within the police for working with LGBT members of the community within the and is part of the LGBT group within police.

West Sussex Anti Bullying Strategy The Anti Bullying Strategy has now been written and completed and the steering group, of which Emma is a member, are now writing the operational plan to be rolled out to schools and groups working with young people. Data collection work is taking place with young people to be added to the plan and resources for community groups are being made.

Romance Academy Emma and Helen (the youth worker in Horsham Town) have been running a joint romance academy with young people from Steyning and Horsham areas. This is a 10-week course that explores healthy relationships, sexual health and topics such as consent. We held a residential over the weekend of the 16-17th of May in Barcombe near Lewes. The young people attending this pilot are really enjoying the course and gaining a lot from is. Following its completion we will be looking to start a course in the Steyning area after September.

We are holding some sports sessions over the half term in the May Half term memorial playing field while clubs are having a week off. As well as detached work in the local area.

Football Tournament - Emma is currently working with Paddy Summer Provision Donovan (the youth worker for Ashington/Washington/Wiston area to put on a 5 a side football tournament in the area over the summer brining together young people from across the district to play, more details to follow.

PGL Summer Camps - We are currently signing young people up for camp over the summer that we are organising across the team. At the Windmill Hill site in East Sussex from the 21st-23rd of August (2 nights) for the cost of £95 This will include all transport and full board as well as activities

such as kayaking, high ropes, team work, rock climbing, giant swing, abseiling etc.

We have purchased some new display boards to replace the Notice boards broken wooden one outside of the Cuthman centre, once these are up it will give a much better space to advertise new activities for local young people.
