    South Downs Way Challenge…Virtually Week 3 –Buriton to Cocking Hill ... 11 miles. Last week our walk took us from Exton to the eastern edge of the QE2 Country Park and Buriton, approx 24 miles from the start. Keep doing your steps in front of the TV, and this week let’s go from march around the block and prepare to walk from Buriton to Cocking Hill. We start uphill initially, along a small lane that then follows the undulating line of the escarpment overlooking Harting to the north. We've walked five miles to Harting Hill and from here we descend the grassy slope into the valley and then the footpath climbs steeply up to the fort at Beacon Hill. The fort was first built in the Bronze Age (8th Century BC to 6th Century BC), and updated during the Iron Age. Alternatively, following the bridlepath, we can traverse the hill, climbing more gently but eventually reaching the other side just beneath the summit of Beacon Hill. A slight incline then, the only way is down, sweeping into another timeless valley, then steeply up a chalky track through the trees. As you near the top of Philliswood Down look out for the memorial to a German pilot who was shot down and died here, on the very first day of the Battle of Britain on 13 August 1940. Just beyond and a sharp left turn takes us past the The Devil's Jumps, the best example of a Bronze Age barrow formation in Sussex. According to Wikipedia, “The Devil's Jumps are a group of five large bell barrows situated on the South Downs 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) south-east of Treyford in the county of West Sussex in southern England.

The County Council welcomes the opportunity to comment on the proposals and appreciates that the Commission is having to work to stricter criteria in electorate numbers than before. It welcomes the retention of eight MPs for West Sussex and that there are no proposals for crossing boundaries with neighbouring local authorities. The consultation document sets out proposed changes to six district wards within West Sussex. The County Council recognises that at least three of these are necessary to ensure that Arundel and South Downs, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton and Chichester constituencies comply with the electoral quota. It supports the Commission’s proposals to: • move Plaistow ward from Chichester constituency to Arundel and South Downs constituency • move Barnham ward from Arundel and South Downs constituency to Bognor Regis and Littlehampton constituency. • move Copthorne and Worth ward from Horsham constituency to Crawley constituency. The County Council does not consider that the other three proposed changes are either necessary or are desirable to local electorates. Namely: • Easebourne ward in Chichester constituency should remain unchanged. Easebourne is strongly aligned to Midhurst, which will remain in Chichester constituency and Easebourne should therefore remain in Chichester also. Retaining Easebourne in Chichester constituency will not breach the electoral quota rules and will not adversely affect the shape of either constituency.

We, the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, having carried out our Initial review of the electoral arrangements for the Borough of Worthing, in accordance with the requirements of section 63 of, and Schedule 9 to, the Local Government Act 1972, present our proposals for the future electoral arrangements for that borough. 2. In accordance with the procedure laid down in section 60(1) and (2) of the 1972 Act, notice was given on 31 December 1974 that we were to undertake this review* This was incorporated in a consultation letter addressed to Worthing Borough Council, copies of which were circulated to West Sussex County Council, the Member of Parliament for the oonsitituenoy concerned and the headquarters of the main political parties* Copies were also sent to the editors of local newspapers circulating in the area and of the local government press* Notices inserted in the local press announced the start of the review and invited consents from members of the public and from interested bodies* 3* The Borough Council were invited to prepare a draft scheme of representation for our consideration* When doing so, they were asked to observe the rules laid down in Schedule 11 to the Local Government Act 1972, and the guidelines which we set out in our Report No 6 about the proposed size of the council and the proposed number of councillors for each ward.
