Introduction This inventory identifies and describes (in general terms) all areas managed by the Department within the Canterbury Conservancy area as at 20 August 1997, and meets the requirements of section 17D(7) of the Conservation Act 1987. Volume 2 is part of the Canterbury Conservation Management Strategy and is to be read in conjunction with Volume 1, which presents the context, goals, objectives, implementation statements and priorities for all areas and natural and historic resources managed by the Department in the Canterbury Conservancy. Table 1 summaries the 1293 units of land (excluding overlying status descriptions) managed by the Department in Canterbury (452,494 hectares). Table 2 summarises 2596 units of protected land, primarily reserves (36,480) hectares), which are managed by other agencies in Canterbury. The inventory contains three schedules of information. Schedule 1 is an alphabetical list of land names provided to assist with the location of commonly known areas from both Schedules 2 and 3. Schedule 2 is a text description of 230 areas (managed by the Department), which are known to contain significant indigenous flora, fauna, geological or historic features. This schedule surveys features of note only. Many of the more widely dispersed fauna are not recorded. Schedule 3 lists the name and legal description of the remaining (1130) areas managed by the Department. Following the Map Index are maps covering the Canterbury Conservancy. All areas listed in Schedules 1 and 2 are identified on these maps. More specific information about each area can be obtained from the Conservancy Office where extensive records are held. Queries and additional information are welcomed on areas which have been included in this inventory. As additional information becomes available, the Department will continue to update this inventory. It is intended that all areas in Schedule I will have data recorded to a Schedule 2 standard by the year 2001. The schedules do not include areas where management is carried out by other parties (See Table 2). Examples are where public land is vested in a council or a society, or where control and management are passed to a council or government department. Conservation Covenants are also not included. As marginal strips are not well documented, strips established under section 58 Land Act 1948 and many moveable marginal strips created since 1989 are not included in the schedules. 2. How to Use the Schedules [NB. These instructions differ slightly from those in the published book version of the CMS, to allow for easier electronic access.] A. IF YOU KNOW THE NAME OF AN AREA MANAGED BY THE DEPARTMENT: 1. Refer to Schedule 1 where you will find, in alphabetical order, the land unit number and the schedule in which it is described – either Schedule 2 (Detailed) or Schedule 3 (Remaining Areas). 2. The land unit number is in two parts, e.g. G38 002 – G38 is the map number, 002 is the DOC land unit identifier number; 3. Look at the text description of the area by looking up the land unit number in the relevant schedule. (Both Schedules 2 and 3 are ordered by land unit number); 4. Look at the map which shows the location of the area by looking up the map index number which has the first three characters as the land unit number, e.g. H38; then 5. Locate the DOC land unit identifier number on the appropriate map. B. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE NAME OF AN AREA MANAGED BY THE DEPARTMENT THEN: 1. Refer to the Map Index and locate the map number that you wish to look at, e.g. G38; 2. Next, locate the area on the map and note its land unit number; 3. Refer to the map key to find out if it has a full description in Schedule 2. C. IF YOU WISH TO FIND A LAND UNIT ON AN NZMS 260 SERIES* MAP The grid reference is to be found within the land unit description in Schedule 2 or 3. Note that fourteen numeral references are given, in two sets of seven. Within each seven, three numerals are in bold; these are the grid reference numbers needed to locate the area on NZMS 260 series maps. The other numbers, not in bold, provide the full reference for locating the area using the national G.I.S. database. Note. From about early 2003 the land unit and map information will be available in updated form on the Department’s web address www.doc.govt.nz. The current CMS land unit and map information will progressively become dated and the web address information should be used by preference. * The New Zealand wide 1:50,000 topographic maps 5.
