A registered charity called Blue Light, which works in partnership with the Police, delivers an extensive range of youth programmes and activities for youth throughout New Zealand free from drugs, alcohol and violence. One of these activities is a Life Skills Camp held at the New Zealand Defence Force base in Burnham. This programme specialises in building self-respect, respect for others, working within boundaries, self-care, team work and problem solving for 14 to 17 year olds.

Kaydence Reihana, a 17-year old who this year is returning to Ellesmere College, attended the last Life Skills Camp for 2017. At the conclusion of the course, Kaydence was awarded a top prize of ‘Overall Course Award’. Kaydence beat a strong group of young people, from various towns around the , to take this prize. Cave Stream exit

The Blue Light Life Skills Co-ordinator, Hannah Ward, commented that “Kaydence was chosen by his peers for demonstrating leadership skills, self-confidence and team work, was always respectful to staff and fellow course members and ultimately the person you would love to have in your group”.

Kaydence and the other participants stayed at the for the week-long program, living, eating and interacting with army personnel. The week’s activities included learning parade skills, conquering the Burnham Agility, Rope and Confidence Course and working as a part of a team to solve problems together. One day was spent climbing through the cave at Cave Stream, overcoming many fears and phobias as they crawled, swam and climbed through the cold water.

Kaydence moved to the South Island (the better island) five years ago and is thoroughly enjoying life on the farm (nowadays anyway). His personal goal for participating in the Life Skills Camp was to see how far he could push himself, put himself outside his comfort zone and to generally improve his life skills.

After his week at Burnham Military Camp, Kaydence is seriously contemplating joining the army. The defence force offers a range of careers/trades including mechanical and engineering, which is the field Kaydence would like to pursue.

Kaydence would like to take this opportunity to thank his Dad, Hemi, and Bridget for all their support and encouragement. Also, Kaydence would like to thank his peers for their encouragement and vote of thanks for selecting me as the overall winner.

As the economy forces them to think carefully about where their precious dollar is spent, will the Rakaia News advertising budget be reduced? The local advertisers are so critical to keeping the community informed of their services and products and keeping the Rakaia News operating.

Doctor’s Diary Failure to Keep Your Appointment

A failure to keep your appointment at the medical centre is known to us as a DNA – Did Not Attend - i.e. the patient does not attend and does not contact the surgery in advance to cancel or change it.

The medical centre has a very good attendance rate for patients keeping their appointments, however we have noticed that there are still occasions when patients fail to show up for their scheduled appointment or who cancel late, meaning we cannot re-use the appointment.

The effect of this is: • An increase in the waiting time for appointments • Frustration for both staff and patients • It prevents someone else who is sick being seen sooner

Patients tell us that they sometimes find it difficult to see their doctor or practice nurse for a routine appointment.

We understand that there are always circumstances which can prevent a person from attending an appointment, and we ask that you give us adequate notice (at least 24 hours beforehand) whenever this happens. Special circumstances, where due to an extreme situation, when no notice can be given, may also STEADY AS YOU GO occur. Welcome to 2018 from the Tui Guru. Let’s hope we don’t have the big dramas that 2017 gave us and enjoy the new year with optimism, enthusiasm and with prosperity as our aim, and world peace our target.

Let’s save the Hector’s dolphin, the yellow-eyed penguin and the Holden Commodore V8. Let’s save Hawaii from missile attacks and perhaps we could save America and get rid of the Trump. Let’s hope my mate Steven Adams runs for US President and let’s hope Kim Jong-un doesn’t press any buttons on his desk. May bygones be forgotten and we forgive the Aussies for the underarm bowling. Let’s bring back Buck ... finally. Let’s treat Auckland and those clowns that live there with respect. LOGFIRE INSTALLATIONS Let’s hope Jacinda and Clarke find out who the baby’s father is because apparently it’s the nation’s baby. Let’s hope Winnie doesn’t press any buttons when he steps in as prime minister Showerdomes and let’s hope Shane Jones doesn’t get into a punch up at the Waitangi celebrations. Tiling Let’s hope that Rakaia rugby win the Lusetti combined competition and let’s hope Steve Hansen gets knighted and Adrians Building Services - (03)324 3125 Locally based, NZ Home Heating Installer 10+ years becomes Sir Shag. Let’s hope the Crusaders shut all the rugby critics up ... again. Let’s hope Les O’Reilly wins the NZ Trotting Cup or Justin Smith and let’s hope that the Warriors and the Silver Ferns win a game this year.

Let’s hope the ole highway patrol fella finds another place to park up, other than outside the pub at the round-a-bout and let’s hope the ole bill catch and get rid of the stupid buggers trashing our school.

Let’s hope the ole cow virus is stopped dead in its tanker track. Let’s hope we get enough rain and our fair share of sunshine for our crop, sheep and farming folk and let’s hope we get a four lane highway between and Ashburton.

Let’s hope that Salmon Tales Cafe puts mushrooms back on its big breakfast and let’s hope the Mobil continues to stay open late. Let’s hope Carol doesn’t run out of petrol driving round and round the town and let’s hope we get our roads fixed, especially Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road and Thompsons Track. Let’s hope Brussels sprouts are banned from all supermarkets and let’s hope Rolleston stays where it is.

I trust this list will happen in 2018 and this time next year we will be looking at some new New Year wish list. So, from the ole Tui Guru, all the best for 2018. Haere ra 2017 and kia ora koe 2018. Remember, you hear it here first in theRakaia News.

She’s a pretty easy wish list Tui Guru Yeah Right.

Hospice Shop Mid- Canterbury is looking for more volunteers to join their team.

Karen, one of the volunteer team, says “I had read a lot about the SturleyG Electrical Patron of Hospice New Zealand, how involved she always seems to be, and what Hospice stood for. So, having recently retired, this Rakaia-based seemed a great opportunity to get involved myself, having a little Residential/Commercial/Industrial more spare time on my hands.

Phone Gyrth on 027 276 9601 or 303 5407 Working at the hospice shop gives me a great deal of satisfaction, whether it’s being able to help a lady find that perfect outfit, or a gentleman seek out a 3 piece suit, or even help someone find that special piece of china. It’s pretty cool also showing the children where their section of the bookcase is and show them the stuffed toys to play with while mum is busy shopping. What a great way to spend a day. The customer contact is great, and I have got to know the customers well, and enjoy a good laugh with them on a regular basis. Such a different direction from my previous job, but I just love it, and enjoy the variety that the shop offers.

The volunteers and management are great to get along with and I really look forward to the days I am rostered on, so much so that I have taken on extra days when required.

Happy First Birthday THANK YOU RAKAIA!

Harvey’s Bakehouse, Rakaia is celebrating its first year in the Rakaia community, and what a wonderful community it is. Thank you for including us in the Rakaia village. Without your support we would not have been as successful as we have. We look forward to refreshing you all in the future.

A big part of your experience when you come into the shop is the amazing staff behind the counter. They are always up for a laugh and endeavour to make your experience a good one. Caro, Kathy, Rose, Hannah and Emily make Harvey’s Rakaia what it is. Good food always sells, good customer service combined with good food will always ensure the customer returns.

Recently an elderly gentleman shared his thoughts and memories with me, and his words touched my heart. This man now smiles when he sees the trucks lined up on both sides of the road outside Harvey’s Bakehouse. This sight brings back the happy memory of the early days of Meads Cafe. Back then it was Burnett’s trucks parked up on both sides of the road, all stopping at Meads Cafe for their smokos and/or lunches. I feel privileged to be part of bringing a little of the past into the future.

Thanks must also go to Matt and Emma and the team from Harvey’s Bakehouse, Creek Road, Ashburton. You do an amazing job with the food you create every day.

George has arrived early and is waiting for you.

So, to celebrate our first anniversary, we would like you to join us for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic on the Bakehouse site.
