SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES

Special education students are scheduled in this program based upon the recom- mendations of the individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Special education services are provided to students with disabilities as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These services include special class/learning cen- ters, individual/small group instruction, and co-taught classes with a special educa- tion teacher and a general education teacher working together to meet the needs of students.

Other special education services such as occupational therapy, adapted physical education, speech/language therapy, physical therapy, interpreter services, aide services, and a counseling component are available based on student need. KFHS provides a work adjustment program to serve students with disabilities who have this need. This includes career orientation, vocational assessment, a work adjust- ment lab (Fairmont Industries), work experiences, job training, and drop-out inter- vention program.

The Fairmont Career Tech programs are unique. They are skill-based programs that enhance a student’s ability to choose a career. Challenging Tech Prep programs guide a student through a 4-year program plus 2 years of college courses. The Tech Prep student can then advance to a baccalaureate degree if they so choose.

Career Tech programs increase a student's versatility in achieving success on the job, in college, in the military or wherever their paths may lead. Following the career path- ways described in the Program of Studies, students can choose to enter one of the elective credit, high tech courses.

The Interactive Media program allows students to experience aspects of television and radio broadcasting, audio and video editing, lighting and videography that most students don’t get to experience until col- lege. Students develop their skills by producing programs for campus and corporate customers using portable cameras, the on-campus tele- vision and radio studios and graphics and editing software.

Students can earn college credit at Sinclair Community College as well as earn a $3000 Sinclair scholarship.

The Fairmont radio station, WKET, provides students with hands-on radio broadcasting experience. Television programs aired on public access tv stations offer the same for those interested in television broadcasting.
