Srivastava 79 national/regional seminars or conferences, Vice-Chancellor v Executive Summary orth-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), established in 1973 by an Act of Parliament, is the oldest Central University in North-East India with its headquarters at Shillong and a campus at Tura in the West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya. The main objective of Nthe University is to disseminate and advance knowledge, and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas in North-East India, particularly their intellectual, academic and cultural advancement. This Forty-Fourth Annual Report presents the activities and achievements of the University for the academic year from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018. It is based on the information collected from the departments/centres and administrative units of the University. Background The University has eight schools: School of Economics, Management and Information Sciences (SEMIS), School of Education (SE), School of Humanities (SH), School of Human and Environ- mental Sciences (SHES), School of Life Sciences (SLS), School of Physical Sciences (SPS), School of Social Sciences (SSS), and School of Technology (SOT) with 44 Departments and two Centres as shown in Figure 1 below: vi There are thirty-five departments on Shillong campus and nine departments at Tura campus. While many departments offer only postgraduate and PhD programmes; some others offer undergraduate degrees as well, but all departments and centres are actively involved in research projects. Several departments are supported by the Central Government funding agencies like the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the FIST Programme of the Department of Science and Technology. Two departments (Botany and Chemistry) are recognized by the UGC as Centres for Advanced Studies. The University also has 69 affiliated colleges (33 permanent and 36 provisional affiliations), including NEIGRIHMS (offering MBBS and MD/MS courses) and some minority institutions. It is also one of the first few select Universities, which grants affiliation to Minority Educational Institutions from all over the country. NEHU is the recipient of a number of endowments of many organizations and individuals. The University has instituted several awards like the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Literary Award, Prof. M. K. Khare Memorial Prize, Smt. Sarada Krishna Iyer Memorial Award, U Tirot Sing Memorial Prize, Prof. M. N. Karna Young Sociologist Award, Rajendra Kumar Sunheri Devi Jain Charitable Award, Kiang Nongbah Award and Dr. D.S. Babu Memorial Award. Several faculty members of the University have been honoured in recognition of their contribution towards high academic distinction in the country. The University has a number of centres, units and cells, known as Central Services, which carry out and facilitate the educational and research activities as well as the health, sports and other activities for the general welfare of the University community. Such Central Services include Central Libraries, Voice and Data Networks, Health Centres, Career and Counselling Cells and Student’s Welfare Cells (one on each campus at Shillong and Tura). Other Central Services are Guest Houses, Hostels and different units; including International Hostels, College Development Council, UGC-Human Development Centre, Bioinformatics Centre, Computer Centre, Hindi Cell, Equal Opportunity Cell, Pension Cell, Women’s Cell, RTI Cell, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, National Service Scheme Cell, Publication Unit, Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility, Design Innovation Centre, Sports Department, and Campus Development Department (all located on Shillong campus). NEHU also provides space for other institutions, namely IGNOU, ICSSR-NERC, English and Foreign Languages University, Sports Authority of India, and the Shillong Science Centre, which are functioning within the Shillong campus. Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff The University has 447 sanctioned posts, of which 323 have been filled under the three categories of teaching position, viz., Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors, as given in Figure 2. In 2017–18, there were altogether 335 teachers (including those from erstwhile Mizoram and Nagaland campuses). As for the non-teaching staff, the University has 703 sanctioned posts; of which 67 were in Group A, 185 in Group B, and 451 in Group C. As many as 313 non-teaching posts were lying vacant during 2017–18; of which 71 and 227 were in Group B and Group C, respectively. vii Student Enrollment NEHU is a leading university in North-East India that attracts students and scholars not only from the North-East but also from other parts of the country and abroad. Almost all departments have conducted entrance tests for admission to their respective programmes as per the University Rules. The University has adopted the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at the postgraduate level and in some departments at the undergraduate level as well. During 2017–18, as many as 5127 students were enrolled for degrees/diplomas in various departments of the University, thereby giving rise to a student-teacher ratio of 15:1 (i.e., there were about 15 students enrolled for every one teacher during the period under report). Student enrollment for degrees in various departments of the University had slightly decreased from 4929 in 2016–17 to 4827 in 2017–18 (about 2% less than it was last year, but similar to that in 2015–16). However, enrollment in diploma and certificate courses increased from 223 in 2016–17 to 300 in 2017–18. The enrollment of students for various degrees and programmes of the University is given in Table 1. Overall, there were 2278 males (44%) and 2849 females (56%), i.e., there were about 80 male students per 100 female students.

    The News from That Strange, Far Away Land: William Carlos Williams’ Indian Son(g) Graziano Krätli YALE UNIVERSITY 1. In his later years, William Carlos Williams entertained a long epistolary relationship with the Indian poet Srinivas Rayaprol (1925-98), one of a handful who contributed to the modernization of Indian poetry in English in the first few decades after the independence from British rule. The two met only once or twice, but their correspondence, started in the fall of 1949, when Rayaprol was a graduate student at Stanford University, continued long after his return to India, ending only a few years before Williams’ passing. Although Williams had many correspondents in his life, most of them more important and better known literary figures than Rayaprol, the young Indian from the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh was one of the very few non-Americans and the only one from a postcolonial country with a long and glorious literary tradition of its own. More important, perhaps, their correspondence occurred in a decade – the 1950s – in which a younger generation of Indian poets writing in English was assimilating the lessons of Anglo-American Modernism while increasingly turning their attention away from Britain to America. Rayaprol, doubly advantaged by virtue of “being there” (i.e., in the Bay Area at the beginning of the San Francisco Renaissance) and by his mentoring relationship with Williams, was one of the very first to imbibe the new poetic idiom from its sources, and also one of the most persistent in trying to keep those sources alive and meaningful, to him if not to his fellow poets in India.

As per reports, the dairy farmers had to throw away their milk in the river and pond due to loss of supply provision . This article presents the scenario of milk farming uplifting living condition and economic status of the Dairy farmers . Field report reveals that covid19 virus had a severe impact on dairy farmers livelihood . Coronavirus had negative impact on their daily activities and even milkmen could neither sell milk nor could buy fodder for the cattle . The present study was conducted in Gorkha population concentrated in the 10th mile area of Guwa- hati (Kamrup), Assam . Basically, this area has the community engaged in rearing cow and goat and with milk business they supply milk to the greater Guwahati area . The study was based on qualitative research using in-depth interview and telephonic interview to collect information . The study has used both primary data and secondary data . The study was conducted in the rural area in order to find out the basic challenges encountered by the dairy farmers during first part of lockdown days due toCOVID 19 . Though Pilgrimage is generally associated with faith in God and religion, but poetry written on this topic has revealed contradictory ideas. Critics have divergent views about the poet’s reasons behind writing poetry on pilgrimage. It is a paradox that poets undertaking religious journeys either propagate secular feelings or they mock the prevailing ideas associated with the site. His poetry gives a new sense of direction and identity to Indian English Poetry. Like a true modern poet, his poetry also deals with pain, suffering, hopes, agonies, contemporary reality, love, sex, national identity and many other elements. His subject matter is very simple and he treats every natural object in a vivid way. A kind of liveliness in expression is found in his poetry. Like other Indian English poets, his poetry also shows Indianness in both in his themes and contents. Close looks to his poems show that there is a gradual poetic development and maturity found in his poetry. His poetic consciousness is evolving and his maturity as a poet both in thought and perception is clearly visible. This paper attempts to highlight Kumar‟s growing consciousness and maturity coupled with reason, thought, irony and wisdom throughout his volumes.
