Baptist Relief Gosnells family home lost Fund starts operation

Baptist Churches Western Australia (BCWA) responded quickly to the needs of families from Baptist Churches who lost homes and property in the February bushfires by opening the Baptist Relief Fund Inc. BCWA Business Manager Terry Hicks said the response to the appeal has been pleasing. “We have received over $12,000 so far,” Mr Hicks said. “The supportive and encouraging comments from those who have donated have highlighted how good it is for us to be able to help fellow Baptists and the community through the fund. It is the first time that the fund has been used.” Gosnells Baptist church has already raised $8,000 for people from their church who were directly affected by the fires. Mr Hicks believes the amount individuals and groups donate is not important, but the impact of the collective funds will make a big difference in the lives of many families. “We are confident that donations will increase and the fund will be able to make a real difference to those who have been affected,” Terry said. Donations to the Baptist Relief Fund can be made by sending in the form on page 13 or by calling 6313 6300 during office hours. Its team in Romania intervened in nearly 140 trafficking cases in 2010. Romania is rapidly becoming a major transit for the sale of people into the European Union. Victims as young as twelve years old are being trafficked to Romania from destinations as far-reaching as Honduras, Afghanistan, the Congo and China, according to Not For Sale. Once they reach Romania, many of these victims are assigned for passage into Western Europe.

11 leadership theadvocate March2011 Keep Calm and Carry On!

By Monica O’Neil, Vose Leadership

I love a good panic. I prefer to panic over the inane and unimportant, like running out of milk or petrol. My worst panics occur when my Eftpos card is being declined. I now have three or four pre-prepared statements for such occasions so that my heart doesn’t end up in my throat every time I swipe. You probably have a couple of things that get you flustered and frayed. We all do. But when it comes to the really important things there is no room for panic. Cool, calm and collected is the way of choice. And yet the urge to ‘freak out and quit’ overtakes most of us at some time. Running away is a time-honoured response to stress. In the face of pressure, we do an amazingly quick, and sometimes subconscious, assessment of whether we can beat the challenge. If we think we can, we stay and fight. If we think we can’t, we turn tail and run. So, what are you facing this month? Something as frightening as the possibility looming for the British public when this poster was designed? The poster was prepared for release in the event of a land invasion of Britain in WWII. It was never released and was discovered in a bookstore in the UK lining a box. It has since enjoyed a solid resurgence. Everything from mugs to mouse pads are emblazoned with this striking emblem and simple message. A dear friend gave me a desk calendar bearing its image and a colleague has had it on their office wall for ages. It is a fun reminder from a not-fun period of time, that panic and quitting are unsuitable responses to looming trouble. The writer to the Hebrews encourages us to persevere so that when we have done God’s will, we will receive what He has promised. And Paul encourages us to not fret, but to make our requests known to the God who brings peace to our hearts. So why panic when we can make request to the God who made us and all that surrounds us? And why quit, when enduring offers so much reward? Why ‘freak out and quit’ when we can ‘pray and persevere’. I am serious! Praying and persevering are foundation stones of leadership. ‘Keep Calm and Carry On!’

The poster was initially produced by the British Governments’ Ministry of Information in 1939 during the beginning of World War II. It was intended to For more information on Vose be distributed in order to Leadership, please call Monica strengthen morale in the

Emery is our artist of the month. Can you spot five differences between the two pictures below? Jesus Feeds 5,000

Matthew 14; Mark 6; Luke 9; John 6 When Jesus saw a big crowd, he felt sorry for them. He healed the ones who were sick. Late in the day the disciples said to Jesus, “Send the people away so they can buy something to eat.” But Jesus said, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.” One of the disciples, Andrew spoke up. “Here’s a boy with five loaves and two fish. But how can that feed this many people?” There was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down. Jesus gave the bread and the fish to the people. When all the people had enough to eat, Jesus said, “Pick up the pieces that are left over. Don’t waste any.” The disciples filled twelve baskets with the leftover bread and fish. The number of those who ate was about 5,000 men, besides women and children.
