Tucson Chapter Volume 10, Number 1 www.TucsonBNC.org February 2011 Our 2011 Book & Author Events are rapidly approaching, arriving on February 9 and 10. The always elegant Wednesday evening Soirée will be held again at the beautiful Skyline Estates home of Ruthann Pozez. The 15th Annual Book & Author Day at Skyline Country Club will feature informative talks by each of the authors, sales of their books, which they will be pleased to autograph at the Barnes & Noble on-site bookstore, a boutique, and a sumptuous buffet lunch. Our featured authors are: William Link, the co-creator, along with his late writing partner, Richard Levinson, of numerous long-running television series, including Columbo, Mannix, and Murder, She Wrote, is the author of The Columbo Collec- tion, 12 brand-new stories about the beloved rumpled detective. A frequent contributor to Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, screenwriter of numerous made-for-TV mov- ies and major motion pictures, and television producer, Link is a multi-Emmy and Edgar Award winner. Link and Levinson’s most-honored TV movies dealt with controversial social issues, such as That Certain Summer (homosexuality), My Sweet Charlie (race relations), and The Execution of Private Slovik (the only American soldier executed during World War II). Link was elected to the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1995. Douglas Starr is the author of the critically acclaimed nonfiction book, The Killer of Little Shepherds, which documents how the pursuit of a serial killer in late-19th-century France led to the birth of forensic science. A professor of journalism at Boston University and a veteran science, medical, and environmental reporter whose articles have appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, Smithsonian Magazine, Audubon, and National Wildlife, Starr regularly appears as a consultant on television news shows and a lecturer at other universities. His previous work, Blood: An Epic History of Medicine and Commerce, a four-century exploration of how hu- man blood has become a commodity, became a PBS documentary and was named among the best books of the year by Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Library Journal. Rhys Bowen, who has been nominated for every major mystery award, including the Edgar for best novel, and has won nine of them, is a master of versatility. Born in England and now residing in San Francisco, while wintering in Arizona, she has been busily juggling a trio of mystery novel series. Set in turn-of-the-20th-century New York City and beginning with Murphy’s Law, her Molly Mur- phy books feature a feisty Irish immigrant. The ninth, The Last Illusion, will be published in March. A second series follows Lady Georgie, a minor cousin of King George V, through her escapades in 1930s England, the latest being Royal Blood. Meanwhile, her Constable Evan Evans series features a Welsh policeman. All we can say is “Whew!” Rhody Cohon and her writing partner, Stacia Deutsch, have collaborated on more than 30 books for children and young adults, including the popular Blast to the Past series, which features such noted Americans as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Betsy Ross, Alexander Graham Bell, and even Walt Disney. They also have produced many movie tie-in novels, including 2010’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which was on The New York Times’ Best Seller list for a number of weeks. Cohon lives with her three children in Tucson, where she also teaches math at Pima Community College. The Association of Jewish Libraries recently announced Hot Pursuit: Murder in Mississippi—the true story of the murder of three young civil rights workers in 1964—as a 2011 Sydney Taylor Award finalist.
