3 The Orthodox Celebration of the Feast of Epiphany

he celebration of this Feast of our Lord begins T on January 5th, a day known as the Forefeast of Theophany. Depending on the day of the week, this could be an evening service with Vespers followed by the Liturgy of Saint Basil or a morning service with Matins and the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. Following the service on January 5, the service of the Blessing of the Waters is conducted. Prior to the evening or morning service the Royal Hours with the Typika are said. On January 6, the day of the Feast, the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom is conducted preceded by Matins and followed by the second Blessing of the Waters. The Blessing of the Waters is conducted in the church; however in many places throughout the world services are conducted near open bodies of water. As a sign of blessing as Christ blessed the Jordan, is poured into the body of water. An associated tradition has been the tossing of a cross into the water to be retrieved by divers. The holy water from the church is given to the faithful to consume and to use in blessing their homes. In the weeks following the Feast, clergy visit the homes of parishioners and conduct a service of blessing using the holy water that was blessed on the Feast of Theophany. Scripture readings for the Feast are the following: At the Vespers/Divine Liturgy on January 5: 1 Corinthians 9:19- 27; Luke 3:1-18. At the Divine Liturgy on January 6: Titus 2:11- 14, 3:4-7; Matthew 3:13-17.

Wednesday Women’s Bible Study

The ladies of St. Nektarios met on Wednesday mornings this fall for Bible Study with Maryanne Zitsos and Fr. Steve. This past session, the group worked from a Study Guide on the Book of John written by Fr. Steve and members of St. Nektarios. We have had a wonderful attendance each week with now over 30 ladies joining us every Wednesday. Classes will resume with the fall session and continue their study of the Gospel of St. John. 

4 Ambassador’s visit to benefit Allegro Foundation he clergy, Archons, staff members, T the Parish Council and the Mayor of Charlotte, Vi Lyles, welcomed Greek Ambassador, His Excellency, Theodoros Bizakis and his entourage on Saturday, January 11. The Ambassador of Hellenic Republic to the United States joined us for a special luncheon to benefit the Allegro Foundation. Our welcome began in the sanctuary where Mayor Lyles and the Ambassador and his wife learned about the history of our parish and the Byzantine influence of our church.

The group then moved to the Fellowship Hall where more than 150 members of our congregation joined the welcome and lunch. Pam Copsis, our MC, spoke about the importance of the foundation and told us about her journey with her son, Nick who has special needs. Pam also announced that starting this summer St. Nektarios has offered space to Allegro for one of their weekly regional programs for their clients.

We offered a Greek-style southern welcome to the Ambassador and his wife. They sampled southern BBQ and all the “fixings”. Our youth performed several Greek ethnic dances. We heard heartfelt remarks of appreciation from Mayor Lyles and the Ambassador for a wonderful afternoon. Background on Allegro
