Lent was in origin the time of final preparation for candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil, and this is reflected in the readings at the Liturgy, today and on all the Sundays of Lent. But that basic theme came to be subordinated to later themes, which dominated the hymnography of each Sunday. The dominant theme of this Sunday since 843 has been that of the victory of the icons. In that year the iconoclastic controversy, which had raged on and off since 726, was finally laid to rest, and icons and their veneration were restored on the first Sunday in Lent. Ever since, that Sunday been commemorated as the "triumph of Orthodoxy."Orthodox teaching about icons was defined at the Seventh Ecumenical Council of 787, which brought to an end the first phase of the attempt to suppress icons. That teaching was finally re-established in 843, and it is embodied in the texts sung on this Sunday. The name of this Sunday reflects the great significance which icons possess for the Orthodox Church. They are not optional devotional extras, but an integral part of Orthodox faith and devotion. They are held to be a necessary consequence of Christian faith in the incarnation of the Word of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, in Jesus Christ. They have a sacramental character, making present to the believer the person or event depicted on them. So the interior of Orthodox churches is often covered with icons painted on walls and domed roofs, and there is always an icon screen, or iconostasis, separating the sanctuary from the nave, often with several rows of icons. No Orthodox home is complete without an icon corner, where the family prays. Icons are venerated by burning lamps and candles in front of them, by the use of incense and by kissing. But there is a clear doctrinal distinction between the veneration paid to icons and the worship due to God. The former is not only relative, it is in fact paid to the person represented by the icon. This distinction safeguards the veneration of icons from any charge of idolatry. Although the theme of the victory of the icons is a secondary one on this Sunday, by its emphasis on the incarnation it points us to the basic Christian truth that the one whose death and resurrection we celebrate at Easter was none other than the Word of God who became human in Jesus Christ.     THE TRADITION OF THE Theophany House Blessing Published by a Bishop of the Antiochian Patriarchate During the days following the Feast of the Theophany (January 6th), it is customary for the Priest to visit the homes of his parishioners, bringing with him the “Jordan Water” for the traditional Theophany House Blessing. The First Great Sanctification of Water is performed at the end of the Divine Liturgy on the Paramon of Theophany (January 5th). While that water may be given to the faithful to drink on that day and throughout the coming year, traditionally it is only the water from the Second Great Sanctification, which is performed on the day of the Feast of Theophany (January 6th), that is called "Jordan Water" and used for the Theophany House Blessing. All who reside in the household should make every effort to be present for the Blessing. In anticipation of the arrival of the Priest to the house, the lampada, hand-censer and incense in the family’s icon corner should be prepared. If there is no icon corner, a small table should be placed on the eastern wall of the main room of the dwelling; the table, covered with a white cloth, should be set with one or more icons standing upright, a candle in a candle stand, a hand-censer and incense. A small bowl along with several sprigs of evergreen bound together with a ribbon should also be placed in the icon corner (or on the table), along with a clearly printed list of the Baptismal names of the members of the household.

    + HOME GUIDE TO HOLY WEEK AND PASCHA Introduction Beloved, this year we are called to celebrate Holy Week and Pascha in a very different way, set apart from any year we have experienced. We are to be at home, with our loved ones, away from the corporate prayer we long for, and witness the resurrection from our home altars. There is a joyful sorrow hidden in all of this that I hope will bring us edification and mend parts of our spiritual lives that perhaps we have neglected. In a way, we are forced into a very beautiful position if we look at this time with humility. Our Lord voluntarily suffered this week alone. His life-giving Passion began in silence, darkness, and a secluded cell. We are now shut-in and must experience some of this lonesomeness with Him. We will not hear our most favorite hymns sung by our beloved church family and so many things about this week are stripped away from us. We are left with the bare-bones of prayer, which is very beneficial for us. Being alone, let us enter this week into the lonesome cell of Christ and take up the yoke of this week’s rich services which nourish the soul. It will be a very tough year for us clergy, not seeing all your joyful faces illumined with the Paschal light. We must press on together mystically to the Cross, the Tomb, and glorious Pascha. You will all be carried in my heart and on my diskos, as always—but with greater zeal and feeling during this holy time.

Today, on the first Sunday of Great Lent, we celebrate the Sunday of Orthodoxy. This is the day the Holy Orthodox Church recalls its victory over the iconoclast heresy and other heresies and remembers all who fought for the Orthodox faith. In the year 843, the iconoclastic controversy, which had raged on and off since 726, was finally ended, and icons and their veneration were restored on the first Sunday of Great Lent. The First Sunday of Great Lent has been commemorated as the “Triumph of Orthodoxy” ever since. It was on this first Sunday of Lent in the year 843 that Empress Theodora and Saint Methodius, then Patriarch of Constantinople, restored the icons to the churches, overcoming the heresy of iconoclasm. This ever-memorable Empress venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch and other confessors and righteous men, and openly cried out these holy words: “If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icons, not adoring them as though they were gods, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype, let him be anathema.” Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast of Great Lent, she asked God’s forgiveness for her husband the late Emperor Theophilos, an iconoclast, who had died in 842. After this, on the first Sunday of Great Lent, she and her young son, Michael the Emperor, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them.

Ever since, this Sunday has been commemorated as the "Triumph of Orthodoxy." Historical Background The Seventh Ecumenical Council dealt predominantly with the controversy regarding icons and their place in Orthodox worship. It was convened in Nicaea in 787 by Empress Irene at the request of Tarasios, Patriarch of Constantinople. The Council was attended by 367 bishops. Almost a century before this, the iconoclastic controversy had once more shaken the foundations of both Church and State in the Byzantine Empire. Excessive religious respect and the ascribed miracles to icons by some members of society, approached the point of worship (due only to God) and idolatry. This instigated excesses at the other extreme by which icons were completely taken out of the liturgical life of the Church by the Iconoclasts. The Iconophiles, on the other-hand, believed that icons served to preserve the doctrinal teachings of the Church; they considered icons to be man's dynamic way of expressing the divine through art and beauty. The Council decided on a doctrine by which icons should be venerated but not worshipped. In answering the Empress' invitation to the Council, Pope Hadrian replied with a letter in which he also held the position of extending veneration to icons but not worship, the last befitting only God.

An analysis of photographs from the International Space Station (ISS) demonstrated that a particular area of the Zvezda module is used for the display of icons, both Orthodox and secular, including the Mother of God of Kazan and Yuri Gagarin. The Orthodox icons are frequently sent to space and returned to Earth at the request of church clerics. In this process, the icons become part of an economy of belief that spans Earth and space. This practice stands in contrast to the prohibition against displaying political/religious imagery in the U.S.-controlled modules of ISS. The icons mark certain areas of ISS as bounded sacred spaces or hierotopies, separated from the limitless outer space beyond the space station walls. Here’s the plan: If you like, please bring a potluck dish (no fasting)! 11:30pm – 12:00 pm: meet-n-greet… Have some snacks and catch up with others. 12:00pm – 1:00pm: Prayer, Lunch and Discussion on House Blessings and their connection to Theophany We’ll need to start promptly at noon with the blessing of the food. Our special guest will be Fr. David who will lead us in a discussion over lunch on the connection between Theophany and house blessings. We may discern from Joshua 24:15 that we make the choice to serve God. As Orthodox Christians, we have made that choice and should want the places we spend the most time in to be sanctified so we can remember that all we have belongs to God. To that end, we traditionally start each New Year by ‘renewing’ our homes as ‘little churches’ with Blessed ‘Jordan Waters’ during Theophany. We want to seek God in all places since as for me, “…I and my house will serve the Lord!” 1:00pm – 1:30pm House Blessing (see attached) Whether you are familiar with house blessings or new to Orthodoxy and wondering what this is all about, please join us – you are most welcome to bring a friend too! THE TRADITION OF THE Theophany House Blessing During the days following the Feast of the Theophany (January 6th), it is customary for the Priest to visit the homes of his parishioners, bringing with him the “Jordan Water” for the traditional Theophany House Blessing.1 All who reside in the household should make every effort to be present for the Blessing.
