The Dream of Empire: The Scottish Roots of English Studies in Canada SARAH PHILLIPS CASTEEL T XHE LAST FIFTEEN years have seen the publication of a num• ber of histories of English Studies in Canada which depart from earlier discussions by focusing on disciplinary formation rather than on the history of a specific institution (Tayler; Johnson; Murray; Hubert). This new orientation has brought to light some of the social undercurrents that propelled the formation of the discipline of English in the emerging society of nine• teenth-century colonial Canada. Yet surprisingly, these disci• plinary histories largely neglect the significant links between the rise of English Studies and the history of British imperialism that have recently been identified by scholars such as Gauri Viswanathan and Robert Crawford. This limitation is best illustrated by the treatment of the Scot• tish legacy in the histories of the discipline. Most scholars of Canadian English Studies readily acknowledge the dispropor• tionate impact of Scottish immigrants on the formation of Canadian universities, and especially on the growth of rhetoric and of modern languages departments. Some have in fact made the Scottish contribution the focus of their studies (Masters; Tayler). Such scholars call attention to the deep-rooted divi• sions between English Anglican and Scottish Presbyterian edu• cators that patterned the Canadian educational system and determined the place of English Studies in that system, as the English emphasis on a classical curriculum came up against the more utilitarian Scottish approach. Yet these accounts fail to consider in any depth how a long and fraught history of Anglo- Scottish relations informed the Scottish immigrants' debate with English educators in Canada. -

We Are Mcgill
We are McGill On September 20, 2011, Provost Anthony Masi and Vice-Principal Michael di Grappa issued a communiqué concerning classes being held off-campus during the MUNACA strike. This followed an incident a week earlier in which a McGill professor was threatened with suspension for carrying out her academic duties by teaching off-campus so that she and her students would not have to cross the MUNACA picket line. The message from the Provost and the Vice-Principal was clearly intended to justify this threat in the eyes of the McGill community, and to intimidate other faculty members who might be contemplating similar action in support of their MUNACA co-workers. In presuming to express “McGill’s position” on this issue – as if the senior Administration were identical with the University—the Provost and the Vice-Principal selectively invoked regulations which they interpreted as requiring that academic duties be performed on campus. They also suggested that professors who teach off-campus during the strike are failing in their obligation to students by inconveniencing them and exposing them to unsafe learning conditions. We reject all of this. Teaching off-campus during strikes is a practice with a long and noble history at North American universities, one that allows faculty members and students to respect their co-workers, and their own consciences, while still meeting their obligations to each other. The Administration’s aggressive disregard for the integrity of this practice displays the very same lack of respect for the University’s diverse constituents that has characterized its treatment of McGill’s unionized support staff. -

We strive to feature content that presents radical, anti-oppressive, and intersectional perspectives on current issues, especially works by Queer and/or Trans people, Black and/or Indigenous people, and other people of colour. EBB AND FLOW: CANADIAN IMMIGRATION POLICIES AND THE MAKING OF CHINESE CANADIAN IDENTITY, 1949-1989 by Shawn Deng A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF Master of Arts in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Department of History and Classical Studies) MCGILL UNIVERSITY (Montreal) August 2019 © Shawn Deng, 2019 ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the ways in which Canadian immigration policies influenced the making of Chinese Canadian identity between 1949 and 1989, by focusing on three historic moments: the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, the family reunification agreement between Canada and the PRC in 1973, and the Tiananmen massacre in 1989. I use these three historic moments to trace a state-community connection, and to show how state-community interaction on Canadian immigration policies shaped the perception of being Chinese in Canada. To clarify this process, my project brings two interrelated yet distinct concepts to bear in tracing the nuances of Chinese identity in Canada. The concept of “diasporic identity” draws attention to the way Chinese communities living abroad define and express their identities by building links between the local settler society and the ancestral homeland. The concept of “Chinese Canadian identity” draws attention to the way the Chinese in Canada developed their sense of belonging in Canada when the Canadian state met their needs in terms of diasporic identity. To these investigative ends, this thesis analyzes the responses of the Canadian state to key historical moments using government documents and parliamentary Hansards, and analyzes the responses of the Chinese in Canada using two Chinese Canadian newspapers: The Chinese Times and the Shing Wah Daily News. -
