As Cincinnati Ballet’s 2009-2010 Season closes, we reflect on yet another triumphant series of beloved ballet traditions, contemporary classics and daring world premieres. In its 46th year, Cincinnati Ballet worked not only to preserve, but also to further the art form of dance. All the while, we increased revenue, cut expenses, planned for future growth and challenged ourselves to aspire.

This was our first year to be guided by a new mission statement and strategic plan, which focused on five primary objectives: Knock their socks off, Teach them to dance, Fill every seat, Fund the future, and Implement best management practices. The mission of Cincinnati Ballet is “to inspire hope and joy in our community and beyond through the power and passion of dance.” Our mantra is “Everybody Dances.”

The essence of those simple statements touches on every aspect of Cincinnati Ballet, from staff to dancers, students, board and community. We set forth a challenge with the strategic plan: setting higher goals and measuring our success to those goals. The good news is that we are, day by day, series by series, dance student by dance student attaining new breadth, diversity, attention and support.

We received new and exciting corporate support for our education programs, which touch the lives of young people in our community, Cervilio Amador helping them explore movement, learning to express emotions, joy or frustration with their bodies in ways that build confidence and promote new commonalities. Thanks to these gifts, we are able to offer dance to more students from different socioeconomic backgrounds than ever before, expanding their lives and impacting the community.

Our Board of Trustees expanded not only in numbers, but also in regional and ethnic composition. This expansion is important, not just for the financial impact – an essential component to our bottom-line success – but also because, through the engagement Janessa Touchet and establishment of effective committees, the board’s stewardship Kristi Capps has moved Cincinnati Ballet forward. Our board is representative of our community, setting a tremendous example of the talent, leadership and diversity.

Cincinnati Ballet has benefited from outstanding community support for all our programs, and I am deeply grateful. I am frequently astonished by the talent of our dancers, musicians, guest artists, faculty, students and professional staff. Their commitment, dedication and passion strengthens and advances the institution, ensuring our continued financial viability and superior artistry.

We look ahead to 2010-2011, electrified with a renewed sense of purpose and inspired by our ambitious mission. Join me: expand your spirit, activate your mind and fall head-over-heels in love with ballet.

I jumped, or should I say grand jetéd and pirouetted, for joy to see the end of this economically challenged 2009- 2010 Season. The stories – whether administrative or artistic – were surprising, inspiring, funny, sometimes overwhelming, and difficult but ultimately hopeful.

We dedicated the entire season to a man we all know and deeply appreciate, Otto M. Budig, Jr. The magnitude of his support and constancy has been the foundation for steady growth and success at Cincinnati Ballet, especially in this tough economy. As our season concludes, we celebrate and thank Otto for giving us the challenge of living up to his generosity and the opportunity to forge new paths.

Cincinnati Ballet accomplished some of our most adventurous artistic aspirations this year. Works like Mozart’s Requiem, which blended the talents of chorus, design and choreographic invention to new heights, and gave us reasons to believe those successes could be repeated. The Sammy Project! reaffirmed choreographer Darrell Moultrie’s unique ability to emphasize the individuality and oh-so-out-there personalities of our dancers in ways that were joyous and thought provoking. We said a poignant goodbye to long time principal ballerina, Kristi Capps. We proved with New Works that Cincinnati supports an impressive array of local artists – musicians and choreographers. We witnessed Company Dancers record ticket sales for our story ballets, - an awe- inspiring collaboration with BalletMet, where 25 swans became the undulation of a single swan wing expanding the entire stage and our hopeful, happily-ever-after Cinderella. We exceeded every financial ticket sale goal for the entire season in every category – single, subscription and group – sparking momentum for the 2010-2011 Season!

I am very proud to say we paid down – completely – the long, burdensome line of credit, which has haunted Cincinnati Ballet from the time I arrived 13 years ago. The ambition and drive at Zack Grubbs, Sarah Hairston the staff level has never been more pronounced or determined. Zack Grubbs, Sarah Hairston I am lucky to be surrounded by people who know that a high quality of dance brings vibrancy and hope to our community in unstoppable ways.

Thank you for being a part of the Ballet family.

Your partner in this performance as “Everybody Dances,”

~ Victoria Morgan, Artistic Director & CEO ~

In 2009-2010, Cincinnati Ballet began to re-envision the future of education Next season will bring a touring production of Peter and the Wolf, an and outreach. Realizing the changing dynamics of arts education in public expansion in the CincyDance! program and a new collaboration with the schools, we decided to go anywhere and everywhere with Cincinnati Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Ballet, reaching further into the community than ever before, forming partnerships with school districts and arts groups, creating exciting new programming and increasing our reach in diversity.

In its 14th year, CincyDance!, the flagship program of the Education Department, reached more than 635 students in 16 Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky school classrooms. The program brings six weeks of ballet class to elementary schools. At the end of the six weeks, we invited students showing potential to attend a 20-week Ballet Foundations class with Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy. We’ve offered 10 full, lifetime scholarships into Cincinnati Ballet Academy – and seven of those students performed in Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker. We had such a large influx of boys that the Education Department created a boys class taught by Company dancer Liang Fu.

We offered Behind-the-Scenes Tours, inviting community groups to visit our facility, tour wardrobe, watch rehearsal and learn about Cincinnati Ballet. We more than doubled last year’s attendance, reaching 1,242 students, seniors, and “ladies who lunch.”

Our Creative Movement Residencies have continued to grow in popularity. Although we are Cincinnati Ballet, we are also the leading teachers of Hip Hop, Modern and Jazz. In the 2009-2010 Season Creative Movement Residencies brought dance to 1,060 students.

Cincinnati Ballet’s In-Step is a 50-minute educational demonstration featuring Company dancers. Demonstrations of classical variations follow an introduction to the history and technique of ballet. This program is popular with schools, retirement communities, businesses and arts centers. The Education Department also became the liaison for the Fine Arts Fund kick-off campaigns. We reached new families at GE, Cintas, Duke Energy and Procter & Gamble. With the Fine Arts Fund Sampler Weekend, we reached more than 1,000 families. PAGE 9 Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy Report

Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy remains the largest pre- professional institution for dance education in the region. 2009-2010 tuition revenue for all divisions increased over 2008-2009 revenue by 14%. Thousands of students attended Adult Ballet, Hip Hop and Rhythm & Motion classes – averaging more than 1,200 per month, with a revenue increase of 13% over 2008-2009.

In 2009-2010, the student body grew by 12% over 2008-2009. Almost every Children’s Division (ages 3-7) class was completely full, with 358 students enrolled (7% increase). Main Divison (ages 8-college) saw 224 students (21% increase). More than 240 students enrolled in Cincinnati Ballet Academy 2010 Summer Programs (10% increase).

Cincinnati Ballet Academy staff experienced a major restructuring early in the season that resulted in two newly re-designed staff positions: the Accounts Manager, the Customer Care Specialist/Blue Ash Assistant Manager. This new staff stewards all tuition receivables, oversees receptionists and volunteers and manages the Blue Ash facility. At the end of 2009-2010 Season, Cincinnati Ballet said goodbye to dear friend Valentine Liberatore, who served as Academy Dean for five years. He moved on to Texas to lead a dance school there. We welcome Catherine Batcheller, who will begin serving as new Academy Dean September 1, 2010.

Under the direction of the tirelessly committed chair Patrick Donnelly, Cincinnati Ballet Academy Committee grew in structure and purpose, building a strategic 10-year vision and establishing the four pillars of the Academy (Development of the Whole Student, Family/Community, Diversity and Right-Sized Growth). The committee conducted a school- wide customer survey that proved that customers choose Cincinnati Ballet Academy for the quality of instruction and the connection to the Academy Students professional company.

Cincinnati Ballet Academy hosted its annual “Dancing With Our Stars” Fundraising event in February. Dedicated parent volunteers led by Kelly Enwright and Lauren LaCerda, and the stars of the evening, our Cincinnati Ballet Company Dancers, Music Director Carmon DeLeone and WLWT’s Jonathan Hawgood, made the evening a tremendous success.

In May, the Academy held its annual Children’s Division Spring Production at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. More than 300 of our youngest dancers performed in costume to an audience of delighted parents, grandparents, siblings and friends. Main Division students displayed budding artistry and technique in three sold-out performances at our Mickey Jarson Kaplan Performance Studio. Eight teachers gave their time, energy and creativity to choreographing and leading rehearsals.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our students, whose dedication and artistry inspire us and we are poised for further growth in the Academy for the 2010-2011 season, under the guidance of the new Dean Catherine Batcheller.

PAGE 10 Finance Report

Through 2009-2010 we have been able to post strong financial results. We built our 2009-2010 budget with an allowance for contingencies and a focus to further pay down our line of credit debt that plagued Cincinnati Ballet for years. Early in the 2009-2010 year we realized through our financial projections and cash flow stability that we could pay down the remaining $240,000 owed on our line of credit to completely eliminate our debt. We accomplished this, despite the economic downturn through strong ticket sales, exceeding total ticket sale goals by over $167,000 and through a vigilant focus on expenses. We saved on production and personnel expenses by challenging every line item of the budget and truly maximized our spending. As we anticipate one major donor decline through the 2011-2012 Season we will continue to strive to live within our means.

Our revenue budget for 2009-2010 was $5.75 million. We chose to set a portion of our surplus to build reserves for the challenges we know we must face beyond the 2011-2012 Season. Our 2009-2010 expense budget was set at $5.74 million and through our vigilant control of expenses, we came in at $5.62 million at year end. Through our ambitious drive in ticket sales and a disciplined development effort, we ended the 2009-2010 season with revenues at $5.86 million. For the first time in recent history we offered employees a well deserved year-end bonus.
