Here It Became Obvious That Hollacombe Crediton and Not Hollacombe Winkleigh Was Implied and Quite a Different Proposition
INTRODUCTION In 1876 Charles Worthy wrote “The History of the Manor and Church of Winkleigh”, the first and only book on Winkleigh to be published. Although this valuable little handbook contains many items of interest, not all of which fall within the range of its title, it is not a complete history and consequently fails to meet the requirements of the Devonshire Association. More than a dozen years ago a friend remarked to me that the monks of Crediton at one time used to walk to Hollacombe in order to preach at the ancient chapel of Hollacombe Barton. I was so surprised by this seemingly long trek that I made enquiries of the Devonshire Association. I was referred to the Tower Library of Crediton Church where it became obvious that Hollacombe Crediton and not Hollacombe Winkleigh was implied and quite a different proposition. Meantime the Honorary General Editor of the Parochial Section (Hugh R. Watkins Esq.) suggested that I should write a history of Winkleigh. The undertaking was accepted although it was clear that my only qualification for the task was a deep regard for the associations of the parish combined with a particularly intense love for the hamlet of Hollacombe. The result of this labour of love, produced in scanty spare time, and spread over the intervening years should be considered with these points in view. The proof of this present pudding will be measured by the ease with which the less immediately interesting parts can be assimilated by the general reader. Due care has been taken to verify all the subject matter.

Totnes to Littlehempston Proposed Cycle Route Feasibility Study Route Analysis (Refers to the Route Options Described in Totnes to Littlehempston Proposed Cycle Route Comparison of Possible Alternative Options November 2011) Devon County Council February 2012 1 Introduction The purpose of this report is to expand on the preliminary study of possible alternative options for a cycle route from Totnes to Littlehempston. Option 1 Bridgetown Hill and Bourton Lane Description The route starts on the A385 which is the main route between Totnes and Torbay before turning onto Bourton Lane which starts as a well surfaced housing estate road, becomes a country lane then deteriorates into a rough track with potholes, streams cut by water erosion, concrete patched areas and rough bedrock. In some places the track surface is the underlying bedrock. At present a 4wd, quad bike, mountain bike or light walking boots are required to negotiate the route Gradients are long and steep with little respite from climbing. Width south of the crest are 3m plus some verge space for passing North of the crest width is 2.5m tight between hedges with passing only possible in gateways. The route crosses the busy A381 where the speed limit is 60mph and visibility is severely substandard when looking right when travelling northwards. Works required. A new path would require construction from Lower Bourton to Combe Cottage. To the south of the highest point considerable existing erosion indicates that drainage is a problem and a sealed path would be required for longevity. The path would be shared with agricultural traffic and will therefore need to be constructed at an appropriate standard for this.

Last Sunday we witnessed what ‘flourish’ looks like – more of that, Guild Events please. Whilst it is impossible to thank all key individuals by name, I RINGING REMEMBERS would like to pay a special tribute to Vicki Chapman – Ringing Remembers Project Coordinator, Colin Chapman – Coordinator’s ‘roadie’, Alan Regin – Steward of the CCCBR Rolls of Honour, Andrew Hall – developer and administrator of the Ringing Remembers web platform, and Bruce and Eileen Butler – who linked thousands of enquirers to guilds, districts and towers. And there are so many others… My thanks go also to all those who have come to ringing through this route; may you continue to develop in skill and gain many happy years of fulfilment in your ringing. And to that widespread army of ringing teachers who have risen to the challenge of training so many enthusiastic learners – well done! Last Sunday was a day of reflection, a day of commemoration, a day of participation. Bellringers everywhere were able to say: ‘I was there – I remembered’.
