Through pioneering programs and opportunities for women journalists, the IWMF effects change in newsrooms. We empower women journalists with the training, support and network they need to become leaders in the news industry, and we promote freedom of the press by recognizing brave reporters who speak out on global issues. Journalists from Ethiopia, Gaza and Azerbaijan were honored in 2012 with Courage in Journalism Awards. “I knew that I would pay the price for my courage and I was ready to accept that price,” 2012 Courage Award winner Reeyot Alemu told the IWMF. A columnist for the independent Ethiopian newspaper Feteh, Alemu received a prison sentence after being wrongfully convicted of terrorism charges related to her reporting. IWMF initiatives help women journalists thrive in their profession across the world. For example, the IWMF boosts women’s participation as entrepreneurs in the digital news media with a grant program that provides selected women journalists the opportunity to launch innovative digital media startups. Since 2011, six $20,000 grants have been awarded through the Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital News Frontier program.

The News & Documentary Emmy® Awards will be presented on Monday, September 26 at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in the Time Warner Center in New York City. The event will be attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists. Emmy ® Awards will be presented in 42 categories, including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Outstanding Interview, and Best Documentary, among others.     The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater celebrates 60 years of modern dance and creative expression By: Haley Messenger February 8, 2019 Watch here: https://cision.criticalmention.com/app/#/clip/public/31fc5fd1-98a1-4019-a72d-999f15ed883a Dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey gathered a handful of modern black dancers in 1958 to perform with him at New York’s 92nd Street YM-YWHA. It was here that the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, as well as Ailey’s vision for a more inclusive world of the art form, was born. Since then, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has grown to include 32 dancers who have gone on to perform more than 235 works for an estimated 25 million people across six continents. This season, the dance company celebrates its 60th anniversary. Judith Jamison, its artistic director emerita, is especially proud of this accomplishment. She has watched the company become a cultural force since she joined as a dancer in 1965. Jamison became a close friend of Ailey while he created a wide array of roles for her, including the solo Cry. Ailey wrote the ballet for Jamison as a birthday present to his mother in 1971. Jamison recounts how her friend was like a “chameleon when he was choreographing.” “He could show you every single part, every single person he wanted you to be,” she told NBC News’ Rehema Ellis. “He could demonstrate who that person was. Gehl, a business leader and former CEO with experience in government, began, in the last decade, to participate actively in politics—first in traditional partisan politics. As she deepened her understanding of how politics actually worked—and didn’t work—for the public interest, she realized that even the best candidates and elected officials were severely limited by a dysfunctional system, and that the political system was the single greatest challenge facing our country. She turned her focus to political system reform and innovation and has made this her mission. Michael E. Porter, an expert on competition and strategy in industries and nations, encountered politics in trying to advise governments and advocate sensible and proven reforms. As co-chair of the multiyear, non-partisan U.S. Competitiveness Project at Harvard Business School over the past five years, it became clear to him that the political system was actually the major constraint in America’s inability to restore economic prosperity and address many of the other problems our nation faces. Working with Katherine to understand the root causes of the failure of political competition, and what to do about it, has become an obsession. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has suggested we are getting only “slices” of the war. Other observers have likened the media coverage to seeing the battlefield through “a soda straw.” The battle for Iraq is war as we’ve never it seen before. It is the first full-scale American military engagement in the age of the Internet, multiple cable channels and a mixed media culture that has stretched the definition of journalism. The most noted characteristic of the media coverage so far, however, is the new system of “embedding” some 600 journalists with American and British troops. What are Americans getting on television from this “embedded” reporting? How close to the action are the “embeds” getting? Who are they talking to? What are they talking about? To provide some framework for the discussion, the Project for Excellence in Journalism conducted a content analysis of the embedded reports on television during three of the first six days of the war. The Project is affiliated with Columbia University and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The embedded coverage, the research found, is largely anecdotal. It’s both exciting and dull, combat focused, and mostly live and unedited. Much of it lacks context but it is usually rich in detail. It has all the virtues and vices of reporting only what you can see.
