-PLEASE RESEND

t has been conclusively established that the acute phase of coronary heart disease, (leading to blockedI arteries, heart attacks, and heart surgery in adults) begins in adolescents when arterial plaque formations begin silently in the arterial walls of those individuals at increased risk. Canadian guidelines recommend testing all twenty year olds who have a positive family history of premature coronary heart disease* or who are smokers or who have problems with blood sugar, or blood pressure, or blood cholesterol, or abdominal obesity. Yet few twenty year old Canadians are aware of these recommendations or attend a health professional who can make them so aware. The only Canadians that are 100% available for assessment of increased risk of coronary heart disease are those, a few years younger, which are still in school. The Healthy Heart Secondary School Program designed in 1987 by Heart Niagara to investigate possible increase in coronary heart disease risk among all Niagara adolescents. And to notify, and inform, those individuals, and their parents, of the measures to be taken to prevent its progression into the adult years thus preventing Coronary Artery Disease. Dr. Stafford Dobbin, Medical Director Healthy Heart Schools’ Program * A male parent or grandparent with angina, heart attack, angioplasty, or arterial surgery before 55 – female before 65

You may experience some barriers to becoming physically active. Spend time planning how to meet your activity goals.

I don’t have enough time. If finding 30 minutes for an activity break each day is tough, try breaking it into shorter periods. Three ten-minute sessions may be more manageable for you.

I don’t have enough energy. Schedule activity for when you feel most energetic. Try first thing in the morning, on your lunch break or just after dinner. Once you start to move you will likely feel more alert. Being inactive can actually make you feel tired.

I get bored with physical activity. Switch between several different walking routes to ease boredom. Bring along a friend or neighbour to make a walk a social outing. Participate in a variety of physical activities to keep things interesting.

It’s too expensive. You don’t need to join a gym or buy expensive equipment to be active. Walking is great exercise and it’s free! You could also look for inexpensive classes offered through your municipal parks and recreation department. Stroke Prevention - Taking Steps to a Healthier YOU! THE FAMILY THAT EATS TOGETHER …

Studies show that families who sit down to regular meals together tend to eat better.

Like most Canadians, you’re probably juggling work and family life, leaving little time to cook and eat together.

Here are some simple ways to plan ahead to make your meals heart healthy.

I don’t have time to cook … • Prepare foods ahead of time. While making one meal, slice extra onions, dice extra peppers, cook extra brown rice or whole-wheat noodles and marinate meat so that they’re ready to use for the next night’s meal.

•Take short cuts. Use pre-cut vegetables, bagged salads, pre-sliced meat and pre-grated cheese.

•Make double batches of your favourite recipes on weekends and freeze them. Simply defrost, heat and serve for an instant supper during the busy week.

•While roasting one meal in the oven, throw in some sweet potatoes, beets and squash in another roasting pan. When cooked, cool and store the roasted vegetables in the fridge for the next night’s meal.

Cook stews, soups and casseroles in a crock pot. The food will stay heated and be ready to eat when family members arrive home.

We don’t eat meals together … •Plan dinner around the day’s schedule. On activity nights, cook a casserole in the crock pot (started in the morning), which will be ready when everyone gets home. Use healthy snacks such as single-serve yogurts, cottage cheese, cheese sticks, home- made oatmeal cookies, pre-cut vegetables and fruit to calm the munchies before dinner.

•Set menu themes to encourage everyone to be home for the meal. Spaghetti and meatball Tuesdays, home-made pizza Fridays, Sunday pancake brunches are just some ideas. •Let each member of your family take turns choosing their favourite recipe for ood HDL cholesterol reduces your risk of dinner.
