Melissa Errico
Melissa Errico is one of Broadway's most cherished leading ladies, as well as a blossoming recording artist who has been called "the voice of enchantment" by the NY TIMES. She released her second studio CD Lullabies and Wildflowers on Mothers Day 2008. This follows her debut CD Blue Like That (Capitol Records, EMI) produced by Arif Mardin, praised as "gorgeous" (NY TIMES), and "earthy and soulful" (USA TODAY). Melissa was nominated for the Best Leading Actress Tony Award for her work in Michel Legrand's Amour, and has been recognized with the Lucille Lortel Award, six Drama Desk nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, four Outer Critics Award nominations and three Drama League Honors. In December of 2010, she received the "Artist of Distinction" Award from the Great Neck Arts Center, recognizing her as a Long Island native who has made her home town proud. Melissa starred on Broadway as Betty Haynes (the Rosemary Clooney role) in Irving Berlin's White Christmas, and then starred off-Broadway in the Shaw play CANDIDA, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress 2010 Drama Desk Award. When only a teenager, Melissa burst upon the Broadway scene as Cosette in Les Miserables, quickly followed by a star-turn as Kitty in Anna Karenina, and then, at age 22, to raves as Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. Since then, she has starred in High Society, Amour and Dracula on Broadway, and acclaimed off-Broadway plays like Major Barbara and The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as in television and film, including CBS's Central Park West and the movies Frequency and Life Or Something Like It, opposite Angelina Jolie. -

Actor-Director Vincent Sherman, Who Played Harry Becker
"Wyler knew how to get to the truth of each actor's capacity," actor-director Vincent Sherman, who played Harry Becker in William Wyler's "Counsellor at Law," told the Goldwyn Theater audience after a screening of the ftlm in July. "Counsellor at Law," Wyler's 1933 examination of the business and personal issues confronting a high-powered New York attorney, was screened as part of the Academy's centennial salute to the Oscar winning director. "Wyler wasn't always articulate about the details of the scene, TERENCE STAMP but he knew when it was right," Sherman said. "He knew how to squeeze every ounce of emotion that was in a scene and to get the best out of everybody." Sherman was joined on the panel by actor Terence Stamp, who starred in "The Collector," for WYLER'S BEN-HUR, CHARLTON HESTON , IS which Wyler earned the last of his directing nominations; actress Carroll Baker, who was directed INTRODUCED FROM THE AUDIENCE. by Wyler in "The Big Country;" and writer Fay Kanin, who with husband Michael was a colleague of Wyler. The panel was moderated by film critic Peter Rainer. Wyler earned a record twelve Academy Award nominations for directing, and during his career won Oscar statuettes for "Mrs. Miniver," "The Best Years of Our Lives" and "Ben-Hur." He earned nominations in the Best Picture category for "Roman Holiday" and "Friendly Persuasion," which also were among his directing nominations. He received the Irving G.ThaibergAward in 1965. When offered "The Big Country," Carroll Baker said, she was "a little bit self-conscious" because after "Baby Doll" she was being offered only "little sexpots." She mentioned her concern to Wyler. -

WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. For more information, please contact [email protected]. 1 Claremont McKenna College Why Hollywood Isn’t As Liberal As We Think And Why It Matters Submitted to Professor Jon Shields by Amanda Daily for Senior Thesis Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 April 29, 2019 2 3 Abstract Hollywood has long had a reputation as a liberal institution. Especially in 2019, it is viewed as a highly polarized sector of society sometimes hostile to those on the right side of the aisle. But just because the majority of those who work in Hollywood are liberal, that doesn’t necessarily mean our entertainment follows suit. I argue in my thesis that entertainment in Hollywood is far less partisan than people think it is and moreover, that our entertainment represents plenty of conservative themes and ideas. In doing so, I look at a combination of markets and artistic demands that restrain the politics of those in the entertainment industry and even create space for more conservative productions. Although normally art and markets are thought to be in tension with one another, in this case, they conspire to make our entertainment less one-sided politically. -
