CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Background of The Study
In everyday life, language is very important because it is needed to build a system of communication with each other in this world and to establish and maintain social relationships. Therefore, language is one of the strongest symbols of social behavior (Wolfram, 2012, paragraph 1). Based on the quotation above, it can be concluded that language has the most important role in social behavior as a function of system communication between individuals. For example, people use language to convey messages about their identity, such as providing information about their name, family, where they come from, etc.
Therefore, as Wolfram says, from language, people are capable to guess or judge someone's background, character, and intentions easily based on the way they send messages or provide information through their language, dialect, and choice of words (Wolfram, 2012, paragraph 1). In addition, according to Holmes
(2013), our language provides clues to people about who we are, where we come from, and the social experiences we have. Thus, when people want to show a certain impression on others, the choice of language to be used is the most important, this is because the language will provide clues about the speaker
(Holmes, 2013, p. 4).
In the study of language, it can be seen that there are various kinds of languages in society. The community can be the person who makes the various
1
2
languages understood only by members of the community. The relationship between language and society can be observed through sociolinguistics. Trudgill
(2000) examines that there are two aspects of language behavior that are very important from a social point of view. The first aspect is the function of language in establishing social relationships, and the second aspect is the role of language in conveying information about speakers. It is clear that these two aspects of linguistic behavior are a reflection of the relationship between language and society. The role of language in conveying speakers' information means that people from different social and geographic backgrounds use different types of language (Trudgill, 2000, p. 11). Therefore, as the explanation above, it can be concluded that many people use or create different languages in this world.
Fayeye (2008) states that people come from a large group of people who live in the same area. "People in society share the same culture as a result of regular, continuous interaction, and as a result of interactions according to a pattern of behavior in which all, more or less agree" (Fayeye 2008, p. 6). The quote states that people in a society who share a culture share several languages with patterns of behavior and ideas that are more or less agreeable because of the regular and ongoing interactions they have. It is very different if there are people who communicate in different languages. The people who communicate with different languages tend to have different behavior patterns and ideas from people who have never heard the language before (Fayeye, 2008, p. 6). The statement above illustrates that society is a large group of people who use various languages to interact and communicate. This means that language has many variation in
3
society that are used in many people in this world. Language variations are all forms of language that are typical or linguistic expression. One of the famous languange varieties used in many people is slang words.
According to Eble in Hudson (1996: 11), “slang is an ever changing set of colloquial words and phrases that speakers use to establish or reinforce social identity or cohesiveness within a group or with a trend or fashion in society at large. The existence of vocabulary of this sort within a language is possibly as old as language it self, for slang seems to be part of any language used in ordinary interaction by a community large enough and diverse enough to have identifable subgroups”. This means that slang is used in several communities. Slang is one of the varieties of language in sociolinguistic used in people to interact with each other based on context. Populer slang in everyday life. Some people are quite active in forming and spreading slang, seen when they try to come up with an unconventional words or phrases that expresses something new or old in a new way and used it everyday life conversations such as in direct conversation, chatting, or social media networks. For example, people used the word
“awesome” and “cool” for describe something they agree on. Another example is the acronym “LOL” it is widely used in direct messages on the internet which means “laugh out loud” and so on. We can found these kind of nonstandard word everywhere, they are not only popular in informal daily conversations, but also in magazine, radio, songs and films.
Films provide many characthers speaking languages based on their community with each other. They considered the laguage as a tool for discussion
4
and at the time to make relationships more effective for the community. They make thier own language structure distinct from the general structure of language.
With the various language they made, it can make their conversations close and friendly in the informal situation of their community. Slang is expressed spontaneously and is not bound by many grammatical norms. Various language are not very systematic, accompanied with many regional languages and local dialects.
Slang is used in developing countries to communicate with each other.
Every country have a slang style based on their language. Most famous countries using slang words are America, England and Australia, because this country is a place for everyone in the world to come and also they learn to gain knowledge and spend free time. Especially for students who are learning English or who are related to English. They can learn America slang word from movies. Films are audio-visual tool made by human whose aim is to give people information or entertainment. Many peoples like to watch movies cause it can entertain them, so that the film can simple influence people. It’s easier for people to instantly copy cultures or language from a film they love, America Film. By watching America
Films, which focuses more on gengsters, mobsters, or teenagers, peoples can learn the culture and slang word used in Americans, because in the film provides slang words.
Based on the above statement, this study found slang in the film. The first reason why the researcher choose this movie is because the main characters on the movie commonly use slang word in their conversation which are sound strange
5
for people who do not understand and use that language in their conversation. The second, because this film win the Teen Choice Awards in 2017 and also the
Saturn Award in 2018, The Fate of the Furious is the third best-selling movie worldwide. And then the researcher found that there are many slang words spoken by the characters in this film, the characters also used slang words to communicate with each other. The characters in this film show their habits in
America, meaning that this film tells the culture, language, and habits of America that not all films show. The film also tells about a car war race in the United
States, The Fate of Furious following Dominic who settle with his wife Letty
Ortiz until Chiper forced him to work for him and change it against his team, forcing them to found dom and take down chiper. Finally based on reasons above, the researcher analyzes this thesis entitled “An Analysis of Slang Words in Fast and Furious 8 “The Fate of The Furious” Movie.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
A. Theoritical Framework
This chapter presents the result of reviewing some literature related to the topic of the study covering: definition of Sosiolinguistic, Language variety, the slang words, history of slang words, definition of slang words, type of slang words, the slang words formation, the function of slang words, the characteristic of slang words, the reason for using slang words, movie and fast and furious 8
“The fate of the furious”.
1. Definition of Sosiolinguistic
“Sociolinguistics is the study of the social uses of language and determine the social evaluation of linguistic variant” (Chambers, 2002: 3). Holmes (1992:
16) says that “the sociolinguistics aim is to move towards a theory which provides a motivated account of the way language is used in a community, and of the choices people make when they use language”. Based on the definitions above, it means that sociolinguistics is the study of language variation and that the purpose of such study is to find out what variation tells us about language and speakers,
“knowledge” of language.
On the other hand, “sociolinguistics is a study the relationship between language and society. They are interested in explaining why we speak differently in different social context, and they are concerned with identifying the social
8
9
functions of language and the ways it is used to convey social meaning” (holmes,
2000: 1). There are several possible relationship between language and society.
One is that social stucture may either influence or determine linguistic structure and behavior. “Certain evidence may be adduced to support this view: the age- grading phenomenon where by young children speak differently from mature adults: studies which show that the varieties of language that speakers use reflect such matters as theirs regional, social, or ethnic origin and possibly even their gender, and other studies which show that particular ways of speaking, choices of word, and even rules for conversing are in fact highly determined by certain social requirements” (Wardhaugh, 2000: 10). It can be conclude that socialinguitics is a study the relationship between language and society.
2. Definition of Language Variation
Language may be a tool for communicate to every different. Languge cannot develop in empty house and there's no society alive while not language. As a result of language and society square measure connected one another and it can't be understood while not one another. Saragih (2010) says language is fulfills kinsfolk desires therein language functions for them to exchange, to represent and to arrange their expertise as members of the society. So, by exploitation the language, individuals can even categorical the sensation and show the characteristics, even the private identity. There square measure some ways to use language, and therefore the thanks to use language may be a selection. This variation is showed by linguistics variations in terms of sounds and
10
structure.between the speech of men and ladies, diferent social categories, and variations between age teams.
The variation of language use is decided by the aim of language use and refers to the users.the utilization of language is influenced by the place wherever the language used, users UN agency and whom the language used. Language vogue is split into two; formal and informal language vogue.Informal language vogue may be a language employed in a relationship domain with the speakers like friends. Formal language vogue may be a language employed in a proper domain with the upper social station speakers (Inayati, 2014). From the reason higher than, it's complete that slang is one amongst the informal anguages that is employed by the teenagers in their cluster. Slang is employed in community informally that involves the coeval relationship.
3. The Slang Words
3.1 History of Slang Words
Collection of early slang language was first used by british crooks developed in the 16th century. Therefore creates new speech types used bycriminals and con artists, the meaning is growing mostly in bars and gable houses (Partridge, 1950: 148). English criminals were originally believed to be foreigners, meaning that scholars think it is good come from Romania or have a relationship to France. The British thug slow developing. In fact, out of four millions of people who speak English, only about ten thousand speak English criminal. At the end of the 16th century, this new style of speech was considered be a language 'without reason or command'.
11
Partridge (1950) divided the history of slang into five decades, which can be seen as the following era:
a. Sixteenth Century
Slang for the first time in the society and became the strange language, also only particular group was using it. For instance, thieves, beggar, criminals, etc.
b. Seventeenth Century
In this century, slang was rich of metaphors or figurative language and related to immoral action. Moreover, slang began into present in popular plays event and put the slang language 1on the stage for the first time, such as in
Richard Brome’s comedy A favial Crew and in one of William shakesperae’s poem in the word hick.
c. Eighteenth Century
The rhetoricians had established for the first time among the pupils and schoolmates alike, a key element in social conceptualization of slang.
Furthermore, slang recognized as a part of English vocabulary.
d. Nineteenth Century
Slang was growing, it could be seen that the intellectual produced the first slang dictionary (1899). The World war I and II also influenced in slang language, such as G.I, Pissed off, brass, etc.
12
e. Twentieth Century
Slang become a part of spoken language and not only used by thieves or ciminals but also used by ordinary people, and slang was used in daily conversation because simpler and easier to speak it.
3.2 Definition of Slang Words
According to Eble in Hudson (1996 : 11), “Slang is an ever changing set of colloquial words and phrases that speakers used to establish or reinforce social identity or cohesiveness within a group or with a trend or fashion in society at large. The existence of vocabulary of this sort within a language is possibly as old as language it self, for slang seems to be part of any language used in ordinary interaction by a community large enough and diverse enough to have identifable subgroups”. Behind that, leech and Svartvik in Wardhaugh (2000 : 26) say that language very familiar in style, and is usually used limited to members of certain social groups, for example ‘teenage slang’, ‘arm slang’, ‘theatre slang’. Based on the information above, it can be concluded that not all slang can be understood by people outside certain social groups, so that it has a value to show the closeness and solidarity of its members. Slang is very informal word or phrases, often of a temporary nature, and is usually used for peer identity and is used in people of all ages and social groups. Slang is a way of distinguishing the insides from the outsiders, a way for a group to separate itself linguistically from other groups, slang word tend to describe negative or taboo things, and extremes.
13
3.3 Type of Slang Words
In discussing slang, surely we have to know about the types of slang first. partridge (2004: 204) explains that there are several types of slang, there are : a. Public House Slang
As the part of type of slang, public house group words and phrases make up for the smallness of the record vocabulary by nature the subject. It is the main, genial, cheery, materialistic, but not gross nor cynical.
The examples are below which taken from “The Routledge Dictionary of
Historical Slang” by Partridge (2006):
- Booze-shunter, means a beer drinker.
- War Cry, means mixture of stout and mild-ale understood.
- Round the corner, means having had something strong to drink.
The term “booze-shunter” used by the South-Western porters and guards who frequented the pubs around Waterloo station, originated the term, which soon became general among the police officers society. While the term “war-cry” has a satirical reference to the Salvation Army, which speaks stoutly in polite language.
And the term “round the corner”commonly used by lower class people about year
1895–1930. From the description above, it is clear that this slang is classified as slang in people's houses because it has something to do with people's houses or what we usually call warungs. b. Cockney slang
Cockney slang is English slang that originated in the East End of England.
Initially, cockney slang was only used by the working class in England. But
14
nowadays almost everyone in the UK uses cockney slang, especially in London.
This slang has been popularized by film, music, and literature. Cockney slang is the brightest in the UK because it has a very pronounced accent, for example there is a change in the variation of the consonant from thesound th to f or v like muvah for mom or fank you to thank you.Below are some examples of Cockney slang taken from the book "A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English" by
Partridge (2006):
- Airy-fairies, means (large) feet
- Back double, means a back street
- Gosher which means a blow or a heavy blow
These examples are categorized as cockney slang because they are all found in the UK, where cockney is commonly used. The word airy-fairies was used by the London Evening News, 20 November 1937; while the double back is used by Gerald Kersh, an English novelist in his novel Nightand the City and the gosher is used by A.Neil Lyons, a British journalist in his novel Hookey. c. Slang in Public School an University
The main source of this slang is learners, because they are fresh and full of creativity. Each school has special words that are not recognized in other schools.
The examples of public school slang below were taken from book “A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English” by Partridge (2006):
- Bonse, means head, for example "watch out, or I'll pick you up across from
the bonse
- Dude, it means a lie, for example "everything he said is bung"
15
- What's the mattress? What does it mean?
University slang is different from the slang used in public schools. When students leave school and continue on to university, they tend to abandon their old slang and use university slang. They grow up to become adults, choose to do new things or think deeply and prefer to create their own alma mater rules. Examples of university slang are:
- Black and tame, meaning Oxford Bachelor.
- Leccer, it means college. This slang was commonly used by Oxford scholars
from the start 1890s.
- Brute, means people who have not graduated.
The slang word “black and tame” originated from Oxford University and derived from the black gown and tameo’shanter affected at that period, with a pun on the Black and Tans. While “leccer” is commonly used by Oxford undergraduate since early 1890s. And the term “brute” comes from Cambridge
University on nineteenth centuries; it is probably derived from Standard English’s word brute. d. Society Slang
Society slang is often employed in daily speaking and connected to the society. Each society cluster uses some styles of slang, and by association, those words or phrase become property that belong to it cluster. Within the times, slang has become such a lot process attribute of the many teams that it's not possible to ignore the impact it's had on western society.
16
There square measure such a large amount of slangs within the conversational speech of society, most of the words shortly disappear, however a substantial range of them keep their place. Moreover, society slang shows a joyfully or jauntily over the item and therefore the apply of the slang user’s own career. The example below is taken from the book "A Dictionary of Slang and
Unconventional English" by Partridge (2006):
- come back the Rothschild, means that to fake to be wealthy.
- Repulsive, meaning unpleasant or boring.
- Silver pheasant, means that a gorgeous society lady.
The slang “come the Rothschild” springs from the legendary wealth of that notable family. This slang was found in 1880 however ne'er used once more in
1914. Whereas the term “repulsive” used for the primary time in 1930 by writer, in Vile Bodies,‘Isn’t this a repulsive party?’ and therefore the term “silver pheasant” used for the primary time in 1920 by Manchon. Thanks to the reason higher than, these examples embody in society slang.
From explanations above, it can be conclude that there are some types of slang that used by group of society, so the researcher used this theory to found the slang word types by Fast and Furious 8 (The Fate of The Furious) Movie.
3.4 The Function of Slang Words
According to Zhou and Fan (2013), when people talk about social the function of slang, then the most important points will be focused in that language as communication between people. However, there are 3 interpersonal functions
17
of slang, namely the pursuit of self-identity, the emotive feelings of slang users, and achieving politeness.
The first function is Pursuing Self-Identity. Different social and
Professional groups have different slang, so that slang is considered a symbol of dividing professional groups in society. If someone uses words and expressions in a certain social or professional group, that person will blend in with the mentality of the group members. For example, if a student says a sentence that contains college slang, then the student wants to get results that show and reinforce the emotion that he belongs to the youth group. American scholar P. Roberts once pointed out that the reason people continue to use slang is because they want it indicates that they are one of the eligible members among certain distinct groups
(Zhou and Fan, 2013. paragraph 2).
The second function is Emotive Feeling of the Slang Users. The emotive function expresses the speaker's attitude towards his subject. The emotive function is one of the most powerful uses of language because it is so important and important changing the audience's emotional status for or against someone or something. Psychologically, slang helps people express their strong feelings, such as group identification and so on. When people use it, they want to show it against reality, and release it psychologically. In addition, slang not only serves as a suppressor of identity or group membership, but also for psychological needs to express emotions, which is also one of the basic functions of language (Zhou and
Fan, 2013. para. 3).
18
The third function is to Achieve Simplicity. For this discussion, it is necessary to mention the definition of register. Registers refer to "a specific way of speaking or writing for a particular function, which is characteristic of a particular communication domain." The choice of register is influenced by three factors, opportunity (formal or informal), recipient (age, gender, occupation, level of familiarity) and conversation content. And the utilization of slang is also limited by three factors. Either the use of slang at an inappropriate event or the use of slang that is not directed at the proper recipient, or inappropriate content in what someone says can damage friendships and good relations with the person you are talking to. Hence, the use of proper slang facilitates setting certain moods or maintaining social contact. Slang is often used in informal events and is important in playing a phatic function. The use of slang can maintain friendship and intimacy between speakers and those close to them (Zhou and Fan, 2013, para. 4).
3.5 The Characteristic of Slang Words
People use slang language because they are individuals who desire uniqueness. They think, using slang language can represent the certain sub social group’s identity, because it is cool, or it seems like a fashion when everybody likes it, it will be often used people. A word can be qualified as slang if that word meet some characteristics of slang. According to Sumarsono (2007: 155), there are six characteristic of slang :
19
1) Clipping
In linguistics, clipping is a word formation process which consists of reduction from a word to one of its parts. Clippings are not created as standardized words vocabulary of a language. They are derived from the terms of special groups such as school, army, police, medical profession, etc. For example exams (ination), mathematics (ematics), and labs (speech) comes from school slang; spec (ulation) and tick (et = credit) on the stock exchange slang; and vet
(eran) and cap (tain) in army slang. Meanwhile, clipping some terms has an effect groups can enter into general use, become part of Standard English, clippings from a class or group that is not socially important will remain group slang.
2) Metathesis
Metathesis is the rearrangement of sounds or syllables in a word, or words in a sentence. Most commonly it refers to the transition of two or more adjacent sounds in Indonesian, metathesis is a variation of the Prokemic language. For example: tear for tomorrow, cook for the plate, and neber for the right.
3) Creative
Slang was created from a new term, so it needs creativity from the creator.
So, creators must be able to create new terms that are imaginative, innovative, productive, even surprising, and funny; For example, the word "bird" in slang means as "girlfriend."
4) Acronym
Acronym is word composed of the result of the initials of several words.
Usually these components are individual letters or parts of words or names. The
20
use of acronym in slang often use by young generations in their communication especially in web communication. Web communication has become a part of teenagers´ everyday life. Its role is to communicate rapidly, briefly, usually with a lot of slang words. The examples of acronym are: “LOL” (Laughing Out Loud),
“KIT” (Keep in Touch), “BTW” (By The Way).
5) Use the existing words
It means slang expressions are derived from existing word with acquiring new meaning. The emergence of this “new” word, in linguistics point of view, will increase our vocabulary. So, the more new words derived from existing words, the more creative slang user is. The example is like the word “chick” in slang language has a meaning as “girl”.
6) Metaphor
Metaphor means transferring qualities and associations from one object to another so that the meaning is clear in their minds. Usually the metaphor can be seen through use of the verb "to be". Metaphor is implied because it does not use the words "like" or "as". That metaphors in other words establish analogies between objects without actually saying them it builds up this contrast. Examples of metaphors are: "my love is flower" means "me have fun in the love show".

21
and fashionable it stand to reason that slang has been in existence for as long as language has in existence. According to Eric Partridge, people used slang for any of at least 15 reasons:
1. In high spirits both by the young and the old, just for fun.
2. For delights in virtuosity.
3. To be different, to be novel.
4. To be picturesque, this could be found from songs or poems.
5. To be unmistakably arresting, even startling.
6. To escape from cliches, or to be brief and concise.
7. To enrich the language by inventing new words.
8. To lend an air of solidity, concreteness; to the abstract of earthiness to the
idealistic.
9. To reduce seriousness of a conversation.
10. To amuse superior public: this can be seen by the slang that children use
towards their parents.
11. For ease of social intercourse.
12. To induce either friendliness.
13. To shows that one belongs to a certain group.
14. To show or prove that someone does not belong to a certain group.
15. To be secret, not understand by those around one (children, students, lovers,
member of political, are the chief exponents).

Following the defeat of Deckard Shaw and Mose Jakande, Dominic "Dom"
Toretto and Letty Ortiz are on their honeymoon in Havana when Dom's cousin

Sensing Raldo is a loan shark, Dom challenges Raldo to a race, pitting Fernando's reworked car against Raldo's, and wagering his own Third Generation Chevrolet Impala. After narrowly winning the race, Dom allows Raldo to keep his car, earning his respect, and instead leaves his cousin with his car.
The next day, Dom is approache by the elusive cyberterrorist Cipher who coerces him into working for her by showing him an unseen photo. Shortly afterwards, Dom and his team, comprising Letty, Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, and
Ramsey, are recruited by Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs to help him retrieve an EMP device from a military outpost in Berlin. During the getaway, Dom goes rogue, forcing Hobbs off the road and stealing the device for
Cipher. Hobbs is arrest and lock up in the same high-security prison in which he help imprison Shaw. After Shaw and Hobbs both escape the prison, they are recruite by intelligence operative Mr. Nobody and his protégé to help the team find Dom and capture Cipher. Shaw reveals that Cipher had hired his brother
Owen to steal the Nightshade device and Mose Jakande to steal God's Eye,
Ramsey's software program. The team tracks Dom and Cipher to their very location just as the latter two attack the base, causing injuries to the team, and
53
stealing God's Eye. Roman suggests bringing Brian in to help them, but Letty rejects the idea as they agree not to bring him and Mia into any more missions for the sake of their children. When Dom questions Cipher's motives, she reveals that she has been holding hostage Dom's ex-lover and DSS agent Elena Neves—as well as their son, of whose existence Dom was previously unaware. Elena tells
Dom that she wanted him to decide the child's first name, having already given him the middle name Marcos.
In New York City, Cipher sends Dom to retrieve a nuclear football held by the Russian Minister of Defense. Prior to the theft, Dom briefly evades Cipher— with the help of Raldo—and persuades Shaw's mother, Magdalene Shaw, to help him. Cipher hacks into the electronics systems of a large number of cars, causing them to disable the convoy so that Dom can take the football. The team intercepts
Dom, but Dom escapes, shooting and apparently killing Shaw in the process.
Letty catches up to Dom, but is ambushed and nearly killed by Cipher's enforcer,
Connor Rhodes, before Dom rescues her. In retaliation, Cipher has Rhodes execute Elena in front of a helpless Dom.
Dom infiltrates a base in Russia to use the EMP device to disable their security and then to disable a nuclear submarine, enabling Cipher to hijack it and attempt to used its arsenal to trigger a nuclear war. They are once again intercept by the team, who attempt to shut down the sub, and then drive out toward the gates that would prevent the sub from leaving into open waters. Meanwhile,
Shaw, whose death is fake, teams up with Owen, and at Magdalene's behest, infiltrates Cipher's plane to rescue Dom's son. Once Shaw reports that the child is
54
safe, Dom turns on Cipher and kills Rhodes, before rejoining his team. Infuriated,
Cipher fires an infrared homing missile at Dom, but he breaks away from his team and maneuvers around it, causing the missile to hit the submarine instead. The team quickly forms a vehicular blockade around Dom, shielding him from the ensuing explosion. Shaw reaches the front of the plane and confronts Cipher, who jumps from the plane with a parachute.
Mr. Nobody and his protege visit Dom and his team in New York City to report that Cipher is still at large in Athens. Hobbs is offered his DSS job back, but he declines in order to spend more time with his daughter. Shaw delivers Dom his son, putting his differences aside with Dom and Hobbs. Dom names his son
Brian, after his friend and brother-in-law Brian O'Conner, and celebrates with his friends.
