  • Stephen King 1947—
King, Stephen 1947— Author: Tony Magistrale Date: 2000 From: American Writers, Supplement 5 Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons Document Type: Biography; Critical essay Length: 11,425 words About this Person Born: September 21, 1947 in Portland, Maine, United States Nationality: American Occupation: Novelist Other Names: King, Stephen Edwin; Bachman, Richard; King, Steve (American novelist); Swithen, John; Druse, Eleanor Full Text: Stephen King 1947— Introduction IN A CONVERSATION with Stephen King that took place several years ago, I made the mistake of asking him why he continues to live in Bangor, Maine. I reminded him that the year before he had made fifty million dollars; since he could afford to reside anywhere in the world, why Bangor? King took me in with a look that suggested he had just swallowed some particularly offensive species of bug— indeed, that perhaps I myself were a member of that insect species. His response was a sardonic, “Now, just where would you have me live—Monaco?” This little anecode actually reveals a great deal about Stephen King, the man as well as the writer. Since 1974, the publication year of his first novel, Carrie, King has assembled a prodigious canon. By the late 1990s he had averaged more than a book a year for nearly three decades: 35 novels, 7 collections of short stories and novellas, and 10 screenplays. One consistent element that unifies this broad and eclectic landscape is that the majority of this fiction shares a Maine setting. Born in Portland, Maine, on September 21, 1947, Stephen King has spent almost his entire existence in Maine.

Chapter One The worst thing about being a gargoyle, Gordon often thought, was the petrol fumes and the pigeon droppings. Being afraid of heights didn’t help much either, something his friend Randolph would never understand, and now that he thought about it, being known as Gordon the Gargoyle was a bummer too. How could his elders, knowing that he was a gargoyle, stick him with a moniker like that? It was worse than being called “A Boy Named Sue”. At least that could provoke him into early manhood, but Gordon the Gargoyle? He struck a match on his elbow and lit a cigarette, another sign of his rebellious coming of age, and the resulting cough rattled his fillings.

  • Dear Prospective Families, the Upper School at Fenn Is Characterized By
Dear Prospective Families, The Upper School at Fenn is characterized by its ability to offer a challenging, high-quality program in a comfortable middle-school atmosphere. Academics are the focal point of the Upper School experience, yet Fenn boys also participate in an interscholastic athletic program that offers a position on a team to every boy and an arts program that allows boys to select their courses by trimester. Eighth and ninth grade boys have earned the privilege of free periods. The faculty trusts Upper Schoolers to use this independence wisely; we count on their strong sense of responsibility. The academic program in the Upper School is a demanding one that prepares boys well for secondary school The vast majority of our boys have the opportunity to attend either their first or second choice secondary school, and whether they choose independent or public school they graduate from Fenn will well-defined written expression, analytical thinking, and problem solving skills. In the realm of athletics, the program features ten interscholastic sports and the philosophy is centered upon skill development, teamwork and sportsmanship, and fun. Never is a boy excluded from the program due to ability. All Fenn boys share in the camaraderie of competing on a team and working together toward a common goal. Upper School students choose from as many as fourteen arts offerings over the course of an academic year. To meet graduation requirements, each boy must complete one studio art, one performing art, and one musical art over the span of two years. Many students earn recognition outside of Fenn for their accomplishments.

  • August 2016 American Indian Student Fi Nds Heritage on Oneida Farm by Sarah Vickery, College of Letters & Science
College of Letters & Science IN FOCUS August 2016 American Indian student fi nds heritage on Oneida farm By Sarah Vickery, College of Letters & Science The story goes that in the beginning, the word was covered in darkness and water, but above the world dwelled the sky people. Sky Woman was pregnant and craved the roots of the celestial tree that grew in the sky. She dug beneath the tree to get to the roots and dug so far that she created a hole and fell to our world below. The animals of the world below helped her when she fell; Turtle came up from the water and provided a place for her to land. Sky Woman asked the animals for help in retrieving the dirt that lay at the bottom of the water so she could plant the seeds – corn, tobacco, and strawberry – she had managed to grab from the celestial tree before she fell. “To us, the corn is sacred because it comes from another world,” said James Flores after he recounted the Oneida creation story. “It’s been a staple crop to us, this white corn specifi cally.” Flores is a member of the Oneida Tribe and an American Indian Studies major at UWM. He’s the fi rst member of his family to attend college, but he spent this summer off-campus, connecting with his heritage on the Tsyunhehkwa Farm on Oneida Nation lands just outside of Green Bay, Wis. “The focus of my undergrad research is traditional Native American foods and medicinal plants. So I was researching white corn and bergamot,” Flores said.

  • Inverting the Panopticon: Google Earth, Wonder and Earthly Delights Asa Mittman* California State University
Literature Compass 9/12 (2012): 938–954, 10.1111/lic3.12019 Inverting the Panopticon: Google Earth, Wonder and Earthly Delights Asa Mittman* California State University Abstract This essay considers the user experience of Google Earth, comparing the world it presents with other world views including static print maps, medieval mappaemundi, and Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. It also considers the scopic environment of Google Earth in relation to Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, a theoretical prison design intended to provide a single guard the ability to view every inmate while remaining unobserved. The Google Earth interface generates wonder and geographic longing, but also empowers the user by granting new and flexible controls that differ from those available to users of print and manuscript maps. Ultimately, Google Earth is not an application that provides great utility, as traditionally defined – it does not help us navigate the physical world. Instead, it does something much more powerful: it gives us a new way to contemplate the world in which we live. Floating in Dark Sea The sky is a flat black, dotted with stars that stand out as single white pixels.1 It is an inan- imate, undifferentiated surface, without depth, without life. Then out of the darkness looms a bright marble, a growing sphere: planet earth, or rather, Google Earth, an entity bearing only fragmentary similarity to our world. In comparison with the dull field behind it, the globe is stunning, riveting, arresting. With the slightest pressure of the index finger, and the smallest flick of the wrist, we set the world spinning – along the conventional polar axis if we so wish, but along any other, if we prefer.
