Student volunteers returning to Dia de los Muertos festival DOWNEY – Part of the city of Downey’s ASPIRE Program –“After School Program Information Recreation Education” – is to get their 1,000-plus student membership involved in the community, in addition to the core mission of creating a fun, positive, and safe learning environment. One of the ways ASPIRE engages the students is by providing volunteers from the ASPIRE cheer team for the annual Downey Dia de Los Muertos Art Festival. Students lend support in a variety of ways, including assisting in the decorating of the calaveras -- the little sugar skulls that are iconic to this holiday-- and also as festival greeters, theater ushers, and keeping the food area clean. There will be 20 ASPIRE student volunteers at the festival this year, which is the third year that ASPIRE has been a part of this event. According to Michelle Jenney, ASPIRE Program Supervisor, “This is good experience for the kids because it exposes them to art and music, is a fun place to be, and delivers real world work experience. It is also a creative outlet, so it enriches their life in numerous ways.” The week leading up to the event, there will be approximately 100 students mixing ingredients for frosting for The Downey Symphony Orchestra launches its 58th season Saturday in the Downey Civic Theatre. Judge Charles Frisco passes away DOWNEY – Judge Charles E. Frisco passed away Oct. 15 at the age of 92. He was born Dec. 20, 1922 in Detroit to Sicilian immigrants, Gandolfo and Giovanna Gianfisco. He had two older brothers, Sammy and Frank, and a younger sister, Delphine. Judge Frisco attended Detroit Institute of Technology until activated as a United States Army Reservist. On March 8, 1943, he was assigned to the U.S Air Corps where he served at Algiers, Africa, Bastia, Corsica, Italy and Austria, and was among the first American troops to land in Corsica in 1943. His brothers also fought in World War II. Sammy was killed Christmas Day, 1942. After an honorable discharge, Frisco completed his education at Loyola University and Loyola Law School. He conducted a general practice in South Gate until his appointment by Gov. Jerry Brown as a judge to the Municipal Court of the Downey Judicial Court in 1966. A rosary will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Whittier. Funeral services are Oct. 28 at 12 p.m., also at St. Bruno, with burial and reception to follow.
