Roach Honors College 2 Texas Christian University, Leigh Mattson, May 2018 ABSTRACT Background: Research indicates millennials are more concerned about having healthy eating habits than following fad diets, and they exercise more than their baby boomer counterparts. The purposes of this study were 1) to determine reasons university students follow fad diets, and 2) to determine other methods students utilize for weight management. Methods: In this un-blinded, randomized trial approved by TCU IRB, participants completed an online research questionnaire after providing informed consent. Population included 236 TCU male and female students, 18-22 years old. Analyses assessed students’ history of fad dieting and outcomes, perceived health status based on body weight and image, eating and exercise habits, and incidence of lifestyle practices such as smoking and alcohol use. Data was analyzed using SPSS (p<0.05). Frequency distributions and correlations were analyzed for trends in health maintenance behaviors. Results: Participants self-identified as 76% females, 85% white, 6% Hispanic, and 4% other ethnicity. Only 32% of participants had followed a fad diet (p=0.01). Participants who followed fad diets included 30% Paleolithic®, 23% Gluten-Free®, 20% Weight Watchers®, and 14% Atkins®. -

Having been developed since the early 19th century, fad diets promise drastic weight loss and/or other unsubstantiated health claims while often omitting entire food groups. Their popularity with the public makes them an important topic for nutritionists and clinicians, especially in the framework of the obesity epidemic. Additionally, it is conceivable that components of fad diets can indeed facilitate weight loss, even if the diet overall is without merit. The grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, and the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) diet are among the most popular fad diets and are reviewed within this study not only in terms of the diet plan itself, but also in terms of possible and known weight loss and health benefits provided by the foods on which the diets are based. -

I had observed the Pritikin diet achieve what appeared to be absolute miracles in restoring people who were literally dying back to good health, my own wife being one of them. The Ames City Council will be discussing a proposal to use fuel contracts to purchase fuel for CyRide, in which CyRide would agree to buy enough fuel for a two-month period at a predetermined price. Currently, CyRide purchases fuel every seven to 14 days and pays market price for the thousands of gallons of fuel. Under the pro- posed fuel contracts, the fuel expenditures would be more stable, which could reduce CyRide fuel costs.
