In the last fifteen years, we have given back over $3.5 million in grants to the community! The Garden Club of Houston’s first Plant Sale was held in 1942, on the steps of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, with plants dug from members’ gardens. Plants propagated from our own members’ yards will be available again this year as well as plants and bulbs sourced from near and far that are unique, interesting, and well suited for area gardens. -

Species of Alpinia often predominate in the understory of forests, while others are important ornamentals and medicinals. Investigations of the evolutionary relationships of a subset of species of Alpinia using DNA sequence- based methods speci®cally test the monophyly of the genus and the validity of the previous classi®cations. Seventy-two species of Alpinia, 27 non-Alpinia species in the subfamily Alpinioideae, eight species in the subfamily Zingiberoideae, one species in the subfamily Tamijioideae, and three species in the outgroup genus Siphonochilus (Siphonochiloideae) were sequenced for the plastid matK region and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) loci. Parsimony analyses of both individual and combined data sets identi®ed six polyphyletic clades containing species of Alpinia distributed across the tribe Alpinieae. These results were supported by a Bayesian analysis of the combined data set. Except in a few speci®c cases, these monophyletic groupings of species do not correspond with either Schumann's (1904) or Smith's (1990) classi®cation of the genus. -
The Birds of Babar, Romang, Sermata, Leti and Kisar, Maluku, Indonesia

Trainor & Philippe Verbelen Received 5 July 2011; fnal revision accepted 10 September 2013 Summary.—Many of the Banda Sea islands, including Babar, Romang, Sermata and Leti, were last surveyed more than 100 years ago. In October–November 2010, birds were surveyed on Romang (14 days), Sermata (eight days), Leti (fve days) and Kisar (seven days), and on Babar in August 2009 (ten days) and August 2011 (11 days). Limited unpublished observations from Damar, Moa, Masela (of Babar) and Nyata (of Romang) are also included here. A total of 128 bird species was recorded (85 resident landbirds), with 104 new island records, among them fve, 12, 20, four and three additional resident landbirds for Babar, Romang, Sermata, Leti and Kisar, respectively. The high proportion of newly recorded and apparently overlooked resident landbirds on Sermata is puzzling but partly relates to limited historical collecting. Signifcant records include Ruddy-breasted Crake Porzana fusca (Romang), Red-legged Crake Rallina fasciata (Sermata), Bonelli’s Eagle Aquila fasciata renschi (Romang), Elegant Pita Pita elegans vigorsii (Babar, Romang, Sermata), Timor Stubtail Urosphena subulata (Babar, Romang), the frst sound-recordings of Kai Cicadabird Coracina dispar (Babar?, Romang) and endemic subspecies of Southern Boobook Ninox boobook cinnamomina (Babar) and N. b. moae (Romang, Sermata?). The frst ecological notes were collected for Green Oriole Oriolus favocinctus migrator on Romang, the lowland-dwelling Snowy-browed Flycatcher Ficedula hyperythra audacis on Babar, the endemic subspecies of Yellow- throated (Banda) Whistler Pachycephala macrorhyncha par on Romang, and Grey Friarbird Philemon kisserensis on Kisar and Leti. -

1 Original Research Article 2 Effect of fertilization on yield and NPK contents 3 in red ginger 4 65 7 ABSTRACT 8 Aim: The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of NPK fertilization on red ginger yield and nutrient content of mature plants. Study design: 16 treatments were defined from N, P and K combinations, with three replications in complete random blocks. The experimental unit was one cluster with stems. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted from February 2012 to January 2013 on a 10-years-old commercial plantation. The plantation is located at 18° 17’ 43.49’’ NL and 93° 12’ 28.68’’ WL in Comalcalco, Tabasco, Mexico. Methodology: Each 15 days along a year were recorded variables for the cluster, and for commercial stems and flowers. Then one plant per experimental unit was separated into flower, leaf, stem and rhizome to analyze NPK. With the data, an analysis of variance, means comparison (Tukey, P ≤ 0.05), and Pearson correlation were performed. Results: With the doses of 216-00-00 kg NPK ha-1, the plants developed the largest stem (2.17 cm) and flower (6.33 cm) diameters and the highest dry commercial (28.89 g) and total (199.3 g) biomass. The highest fresh weight of the non-commercial biomass (383.2 g) was found in plants fertilized with 322-04-90, but this value was statistically equal to that obtained with the doses 216-00-00 (335.81 g). The NPK content found in red ginger leaf, stem, flower and rhizome satisfied the requirements established for P, but not for N and K. -

To evaluate the vase life of floral and vegetative stems, four and six species were used, respectively. Three cutting stages were established for floral stems. Stems were cut a few days before flower opening at stage 1, upon opening of the first flower(s) (anthesis) at stage 2, and when floral stems showed more than 15 opened flowers at stage 3. However, only two different stages were applied for each species. Floral stems were standardized with 50 cm in length, while vegetative stems were standardized with 70 cm in length. The morphological characteristics determined for floral stems included diameter of the floral stem, length of inflorescence, diameter of inflorescence and fresh mass of floral stem. For vegetative stems, we considered diameter and fresh mass. After the first evaluation, stems were maintained at 22 ºC and 53% of humidity. The total number of post-harvest days (global longevity) in which the quality of floral and vegetative stems was acceptable were evaluated. The highest vase life for floral stems at stage 1 was observed for Costus woodsoni, Costus arabicus x Costus spiralis (Costus Tropicales), and Costus scaber. Hellenia speciosa showed higher vase life at stage 3. -
