As nationalism and nativism rise across the globe, my cyber world is under siege. I am not complaining. Powerful images posted online from art biennials have stayed with me: Venice, Berlin, Dak’Art (Dakar, Senegal) and Art X in Lagos, Nigeria. Memorable, startling art, love- infused, aiming to transform the way I, we, see all kinds of difference: gender, race, culture and ability. Rarely can art claim immediate transformative power; what it can do is capture the imagination and plant seeds for a conversation and perhaps – ultimately – a conversion. AN EXAMINATION OF THE DYNAMICS OF POWER IN AYI KWEI ARMAH’S THE BEAUTYFUL ONES ARE NOT YET BORN AND THE HEALERS by NAFEESA T. NICHOLS Under the Direction of Karim Traore ABSTRACT After closely reading the works of Ayi Kwei Armah questions about the dynamics of power arose. What are the different conceptions of power? How does Armah use power in his fiction? I closely analyzed two of Armah’s works: The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born (1968) and The Healers (1978). Along with scholarly research, and contextualization I concluded the following: Armah must be understood within the context of his personal experiences, political affiliations, and the historical climate. Armah presented social power dynamics through a scientific, Marxist analysis. He combined social science with an understanding of culture. Finally he used the power of literary aesthetics in the hopes inducing social change. 64 When it no longer matters whom you love: the politics of love and identity in Nigerian migrant fiction Ajibola Opeyemi 1 Department of English University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3094-1285, Email: [email protected] Tel: +2348062420265 Abstract A number of creative texts by Nigerian migrant writers recreate migrant characters’ experiences of love, intimacy and connected identity politics in the diaspora. However, there is a paucity of scholarly engagements with Nigerian migrant writers’ representation of the complexities that attend the formation and reconfiguration of migrant characters’ identity and love relationships outside the motherland. This study, therefore, examines the intersection of love, place and identity in three purposively selected texts – Segun Afolabi’s Goodbye Lucill e, Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah and Unoma Azuah’s Edible Bones. The three novels are closely read and analysed using the Postcolonial theory’s conceptions of Othering and unhomeliness, in order to foreground the impact of the ‘condition of the diaspora’ on migrant characters’ relationships and identity negotiations. The study reveals that all three novels feature characters that struggle to align their multiple identities and at the same time maintain meaningful love relationships outside the motherland. There is also the representation of same-sex marriages, green marriages, dysfunctional inter-national, inter-racial and transnational relationships, and the negative effects of distance on love relationships. Time and chance then determine the politics of love and identity in diasporic spaces. Nigerian migrant writers represent the pervasively unpleasant experiences of migrant characters belied in the construction of love with identity politics as coordinate relationships in the Nigerian diaspora, through a rhetoric pain and suffering, in order to underscore the unpleasant second side that there is to the migration narrative of bliss and fulfilment. -

Issue.3. 2018 (July-Sept) SLAVE TRADE EFFECT ON AFRICAN-AMERICAN IDENTITY: ANALYZING AYI KWEI ARMAH'S OSIRIS RISING FATHERRAHMAN MOHAMED YOUSIF MOHAMED English Department, Postgraduate College, Sudan University of Science and Technology, Sudan ABSTRACT Ayi Kwei Armah, Ghanaian writer and author of seven novels, worries about African and African American identities and what remains from it after the forced crossing of the Atlantic Ocean and the western colonization. These two historical phenomena are strongly connected to the problem of cultural alienation which strikes not only the African societies but also the whole Black Diaspora. As most of the writers of the former English colonies, his writing is both an exploration of the African historic and cultural universe and an attempt to restore the inheritance which gradually crumbled off and deteriorated in the contact of imperial cultures. This cultural problem is put with acuteness in his sixth novel, Osiris Rising, published in 1995 in Senegal. This novel, which actions take place in the United States and in Africa, is focused on African American and African characters obsessed with the reconstruction of the African past and the redefining of themselves in an environment in which they seem to undergo the torments of a Eurocentric perception of the world. It does this by focusing on the exploration of gender, racism, national and cultural identity in the post-colonial era in this novel that uses the romance template. The close textual analysis that is at the core of this reading is guided by an eclectic theoretical framework made out of several notions, the most important of which are: Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s idea of fiction as a form of language; the understanding that gender and race are socially constructed and can thus be remade or unmade; cosmopolitanism, and particularly the variety known as Afropolitanism. The research report is divided into five chapters. Chapter I, the introductory chapter, plots what the research report is about, explains how the research that led to the writing of the report was carried out, and locates the report in its appropriate intellectual contexts. -

The study critically analyses the significant role romantic love and friendship play in the novels The River Between (1965), Weep Not, Child (1964), A Grain of Wheat (1967), Petals of Blood (1977), Devil on the Cross (1982), Matigari (1987) and Wizard of the Crow (2006) against the backdrop of Ngũgĩ’s other fiction, plays and non-fiction. Ngũgĩ identifies himself as a Marxist, anti-colonialist/imperialist, and anti- capitalist writer, for whom there is no contradiction between aesthetic and political missions. The aesthetic and political projects take form through the representation, very importantly, of romantic love in his fiction. The significance of eros, which is clear in the fiction, is not, however, present in Ngũgĩ’s theoretical reflections on his writing as formulated in his essays. -
