Seasonal cycles in testicular activity in rams were monitored in groups of wild (mouflon), feral (Soay) and domesticated breeds of sheep (Shetland, Blackface, Herdwick, Norfolk, Wiltshire, Portland and Merino) living outdoors near Edinburgh (56\s=deg\N).The changes in the blood plasma concentrations of FSH, inhibin and testoster- one, and the diameter of the testis were measured every half calendar month from 1 to 3 years of age. There were significant differences between breeds in the magnitude and timing of the seasonal reproductive cycle. In the mouflon rams, the seasonal changes were very pronounced with a 6\p=n-\15-foldincrease in the plasma concentrations of FSH, inhibin and testosterone from summer to autumn, and a late peak in testicular diameter in October. In the Soay rams and most of the domesticated breeds, the seasonal increase in the reproductive hormones occurred 1\p=n-\2months earlier with the peak in testicular size in September or October. In the two southern breeds (Portland and Merino), the early onset of testicular activity was more extreme with the seasonal maxi- mum in August. In cross-bred rams, produced by mating Soay ewes (highly seasonal breed) with Portland or Merino rams (less seasonal breeds), there was a seasonal repro- ductive cycle that was intermediate compared to that of the parents. -

How much (if any) of the taxon’s disjunctive distribution is natural and how much the result of anthropogenic influence remains open to date. Similarly, how (and even whether) various populations should be classified subspecifically remains contentious. -

The U.K. Hunter Who Has Shot More Wildlife Than the Killer of Cecil the Lion
CAMPAIGN TO BAN TROPHY HUNTING Special Report The U.K. hunter who has shot more wildlife than the killer of Cecil the Lion SUMMARY The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting is revealing the identity of a British man who has killed wild animals in 5 continents, and is considered to be among the world’s ‘elite’ in the global trophy hunting industry. Malcolm W King has won a staggering 36 top awards with Safari Club International (SCI), and has at least 125 entries in SCI’s Records Book. The combined number of animals required for the awards won by King is 528. Among his awards are prizes for shooting African ‘Big Game’, wild cats, and bears. King has also shot wild sheep, goats, deer and oxen around the world. His exploits have taken him to Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, as well as across Europe. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting estimates that around 1.7 million animals have been killed by trophy hunters over the past decade, of which over 200,000 were endangered species. Lions are among those species that could be pushed to extinction by trophy hunting. An estimated 10,000 lions have been killed by ‘recreational’ hunters in the last decade. Latest estimates for the African lion population put numbers at around 20,000, with some saying they could be as low as 13,000. Industry groups like Safari Club International promote prizes which actively encourage hunters to kill huge numbers of endangered animals. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting believes that trophy hunting is an aberration in a civilised society. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT The supplementary winter feeding is a widespread practice in Europe and parts of North America. The role of feeding is maintenance of high game population density, maintenance of body condition or reduction of winter mortality. Feeding may also be carried out to reduce the environmental damage caused by games during winter. The secondary products from the food industry can provide potential winter extra-food for game species due to their relatively low price and valuable nutrient content. To know whether these secondary products can be utilisable food for game we collected information about the diet composition of game species. Actually, we investigated the proportion of tomato pulp silage in the diet of different large game species in those intensively managed game preserves during winter The study was carried out in two game preserves (Bodony and Bárna). The study was conducted in Bodony from November 2009 to March 2010. In this period 23 bales of tomato pulp silage (each was one ton) were placed on three different feeding plots in the game preserve. In Bárna investigations were carried out between December 2010 and May 2011. In this game preserve 44 bales of tomato pulp silage were placed on six feeders. We collected faecal droppings of different large game species around feeders and along transects between them. The diet composition of game species was determined by microhistological faeces analysis.
