PANAJI, June 5, 2016: Chief Minister Mr. today visited Vedanta’s Sanquelim Reclamation Mine and participated in the World Environment Day celebrations. The Chief Minister planted a sapling and fed the fish in the pisciculture pond. He was given an insight into the entire technical process of the reclamation and taken on a guided tour.

As part of the itinerary the Chief Minister also visited the Sesa Football Academy and gave away the certificates to the successful candidates who passed out from the academy in April.

Speaking on the occasion the Chief Minister said, “Vedanta has done a commendable job and proved to the rest of the world how a mine closure can be nurtured and brought back to life protecting the environment for our future generations. A restoration effort like this cannot happen overnight. It demonstrates that mines can be restored and Sanquelim is proof of that. He praised Vedanta for its efforts to protect environment. It is abundant with flora and fauna and should definitely be an eco-tourist destination.”

Addressing the gathering Mr. – Leader of Opposition said, “On World Environment Day there is no other place better than the Sanquelim Reclamation Mine to be visited. Sesa Goa Iron Ore by this restoration exemplifies what responsible mining is all about. The Company has not only contributed to the state and the nation’s economy, providing employment to the local population, socio-economic development of the state but also taken care of the environment. This place should definitely be on the itinerary of every school child and tourist. I congratulate Vedanta for keeping up the tradition of Goa green.”

Mr. Anand Shet – Hon Speaker , congratulated Sesa for the excellent ecological balance and for protecting the environment. He also appreciated the Company’s efforts on Health, Safety and Environment. It should be our natural responsibility to protect our environment.

The 8th batch of trainees from Sesa Football Academy graduated and 14 boys passed out this year bringing the numbers to 123 from its inception in 1999. The Chief Minister felicitated the outgoing footballers at the convocation ceremony held on the day of World Environment Day. The Academy is proud of the budding sportsmen who passed out from the institution and are most sought after with some of them playing for ’s senior team, I-League clubs of India and local clubs in Goa.
