Lot 578 578 C B BRITISH - Picture Postcards "EMPEROR PENGUINS" Wharton GA-6, minor spotting on address side, unused. 75 AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY - The Age of Discovery (1911-1931) [The 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) was led by , a geologist from Adelaide. Mawson had been with Shackleton's 1908 Expedition & was one of the first group to climb Mount Erebus, the highest point on the Antarctic continent. The AAE was essentially a scientific project that made major contributions in geology, meteorology, geo-magnetism & biology. It has been called "the first major scientific exploring venture by Australians beyond their shores". In addition, the extensive physical exploration & associated cartography laid the basis for Australia's later claim to what became the AAT. Mawson's epic editing of the 22 volumes of the AAE "Scientific Reports" was completed only in 1947. Mawson lead the British Australian & Research Expedition (BANZARE) of 1929-32 which focussed on marine science & resulted in a further 13 volumes of reports]

AURORA/A.A.E.' cachet alongside Tasmanian 1d Pictorial cancelled on arrival with '/21DE11/TASMANIA' cds, light overall soiling & minor flap faults, Cat $5500 (2001).

The "Aurora" departed Hobart on 2/12/1911. It was accompanied as far as Macquarie Island by the supply ship SS "Toroa", on which this cover was carried back to Hobart. 5,000

Lot 595 595 C B 1912 Tasmanian PPC to Adelaide with largely very fine 'LOOSE SHIPS LETTER/POSTED IN/ ANTARCTICA/[penguin]/S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.' cachet alongside Tasmanian 1d Pictorial cancelled with 'HOBART/12MR12/TASMANIA' cds, endorsed "Per SY Aurora" & the message headed "Antarctica/5.1.12", minor blemishes & viewside crease that is not apparent from the face, Cat $5500 (2001). [The "Aurora" returned to Hobart on 12/3/1912. Lot 596 596 C A- 1912 AAE PPC "S.Y. AURORA" (with foresails only) Wharton #MA-1 to New Zealand with largely fine to very fine 'LOOSE SHIPS LETTER/POSTED IN/ANTARCTICA/[penguin]/S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.' cachet unusually without stamp affixed & with a part-impression of the Hobart machine cancel in red as used on bulk mail (and stated to be the only such usage of an item of "Aurora" mail), a couple of very minor blemishes. [The message states "...from Adelie Land Antarctica...Winter quarters very comfortable & shd be A1. All very fit & looking for mischief" and signed "Eric N Webb", the Expedition's magnetician ("one versed in the science of magneticism"). Marjorie Wharton states: "The very few examples of this card...seen have all been used on the Expedition"] 4,000

Lot 602 602 C B 1930 philatelic cover to with KGV 3d tied by one of two very fine strikes of the 'BANZ/[penguin]/ANTARCTIC RESEARCH EXP' cachet, ironed-out vertical fold & repaired tear clear of the cachet at upper-left. [The second voyage left Hobart 22/11/1930 & returned 20/3/1931. On this journey, Mawson formally claimed for the Crown what became the Australian Antarctic Territory under the AAT Acceptance Act (1933)] 500

Lot 603 603 C A+ 1930 self-addressed cover to "Stuart Campbell, Pilot/BANZ Expedition/SY Discovery" at Hobart with Sturt 1½d tied by very fine strike of the "penguin" cachet in black, with a superb strike of the reserve cachet (the most obvious difference is the penguin's eye) in violet at upper-left & another equally fine strike on the reverse. Lot 604 604 C (B) 1931 Petterd cover with Sturt 1½d pair tied by a light but clear strike of the 'BANZ/[penguin]/ ANTARCTIC RESEARCH EXP' cachet, signed "NWIngram" (physician & biologist), "" (photographer), "HaroldPFletcher" (biologist) & "Douglas Mawson", endorsed "No 14" at lower-left (but we haven't seen another), the stamps torn-off (!) & neatly reinstated not greatly detracting from the generally fine appearance. [With accompanying 1932 letter from Frank Hurley's wife that states "...one of my little girls, who collects all kinds of stamps, just casually tore them off, not realising the great value they will be in time..." & signed "Antoinette Hurley"] 1,000
