Case Studies in Forensic Physics Gregory A
DILISI • RARICK • DILISI Case Studies in Forensic Physics Gregory A. DiLisi, John Carroll University Richard A. Rarick, Cleveland State University This book focuses on a forensics-style re-examination of several historical events. The purpose of these studies is to afford readers the opportunity to apply basic principles of physics to unsolved mysteries STUDIESCASE IN PHYSICS FORENSIC and controversial events in order to settle the historical debate. We identify nine advantages of using case studies as a pedagogical approach to understanding forensic physics. Each of these nine advantages is the focus of a chapter of this book. Within each chapter, we show how a cascade of unlikely events resulted in an unpredictable catastrophe and use introductory-level physics to analyze the outcome. Armed with the tools of a good forensic physicist, the reader will realize that the historical record is far from being a set of agreed upon immutable facts; instead, it is a living, changing thing that is open to re-visitation, re-examination, and re-interpretation. #Map The house at 702 Vermont Street in Brooklyn doesn’t stand out. It’s one in a series of two-story brick houses that extends the length of its block in East New York. Like many of its neigh- bors, the house has a narrow, fenced front yard leading to a few stairs and a porch that has been enclosed and incorpo- rated into the house. Trees partially screen its tan vinyl sid- ing and blue cornice. After picking up the kids at Public School 213, you might drive right past it without noticing as you pulled up to the Jonathan Massey light at New Lots Avenue. Syracuse University Open Trulia or another real estate app on your phone, though, and you’ll Brett Snyder learn a lot about the house, including the fact that while the current owner University of California, Davis bought it in 2007 for $424,500 and the house is taxed based on an assessed value of $384,000, its estimated market price is $286,000. There’s a good chance this house is underwater, mortgaged at a value that far exceeds its market value. Indeed, plug in the address at NYC CityMap, the GIS-based portal for municipal information and public records, and you’ll see that when the current owner bought the house five years ago, Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems Inc. (MERS) recorded a primary mortgage of $339,600 and a secondary loan of $84,900. A year and a half later, the company assigned one of the mortgages to Countrywide Home Loans. -

Between the Hash Marks THE ABSOLUTE POWER THE NFL’S COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT GRANTS ITS COMMISSIONER INTRODUCTION For many Americans, Sundays revolve around one thing—the National Football League (the NFL or the League). Fans come from all over to watcH their favorite teams compete and partake in a sport that has become more than just a game. Sunday worries for NFL fans consist of painting their faces, tailgating, and setting their fantasy lineups.1 For professional football players, football is a way to earn a living; touchdowns, yards, and big hits highlight ESPN’s top plays,2 generating a multibillion-dollar industry.3 Like the other three major sports leagues,4 the NFL is governed by a multitude of intricate rules, regulations, and agreements that dictate the employment and 1 Fantasy sports involve fans signing up for a league and creating a virtual team. -

The Tea Party: A Party Within a Party A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Government By Rachel Marie Blum, M.A. Washington, DC March 22, 2016 Copyright c 2016 by Rachel Marie Blum All Rights Reserved ii The Tea Party: A Party Within a Party Rachel Marie Blum, M.A. Dissertation Advisor: Hans Noel, Ph.D. Abstract It is little surprise that conservatives were politically disaffected in early 2009, or that highly conservative individuals mobilized as a political movement to protest ‘big government’ and Obama’s election. Rather than merely directing its animus against liberals, the Tea Party mobilized against the Republican Party in primaries and beyond. This dissertation draws from original survey, interview, Tea Party blog, and social network datasets to explain the Tea Party’s strategy for mobilization as a ‘Party within a Party’. Integrating new data on the Tea Party with existing theories of political parties, I show that the Tea Party’s strategy transcends the focused aims of a party faction. Instead, it works to co-opt the Republican Party’s political and electoral machinery in order to gain control of the party. This dissertation offers new insights on the Tea Party while developing a theory of intra-party mobilization that endures beyond the Tea Party. Index words: Dissertations, Government, Political Science, Political Parties, Tea Party iii Dedication To M.L.B., and all others who are stronger than they know. -

A Business Lawyer's Bibliography: Books Every Dealmaker Should Read
585 A Business Lawyer’s Bibliography: Books Every Dealmaker Should Read Robert C. Illig Introduction There exists today in America’s libraries and bookstores a superb if underappreciated resource for those interested in teaching or learning about business law. Academic historians and contemporary financial journalists have amassed a huge and varied collection of books that tell the story of how, why and for whom our modern business world operates. For those not currently on the front line of legal practice, these books offer a quick and meaningful way in. They help the reader obtain something not included in the typical three-year tour of the law school classroom—a sense of the context of our practice. Although the typical law school curriculum places an appropriately heavy emphasis on theory and doctrine, the importance of a solid grounding in context should not be underestimated. The best business lawyers provide not only legal analysis and deal execution. We offer wisdom and counsel. When we cast ourselves in the role of technocrats, as Ronald Gilson would have us do, we allow our advice to be defined downward and ultimately commoditized.1 Yet the best of us strive to be much more than legal engineers, and our advice much more than a mere commodity. When we master context, we rise to the level of counselors—purveyors of judgment, caution and insight. The question, then, for young attorneys or those who lack experience in a particular field is how best to attain the prudence and judgment that are the promise of our profession. For some, insight is gained through youthful immersion in a family business or other enterprise or experience. -
