In comparison, data on noncoral benthic invertebrates and marine plants is sparse. Whether patterns in diversity and distribution for other taxonomic groups align with those detected in corals and fishes is largely unknown. Four shelf-edge atolls in the Kimberley region of Western Australia were surveyed for marine plants, sponges, scleractinian corals, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms and fishes in 2006, with a consequent 1521 species reported. Here, we provide the first community level assessment of the biodiversity of these atolls based on these taxonomic groups. Four habitats were surveyed and each was found to have a characteristic community assemblage. Different species assemblages were found among atolls and within each habitat, particularly in the lagoon and reef flat environments. In some habitats we found the common taxa groups (fishes and corals) provide adequate information for community assemblages, but in other cases, for example in the intertidal reef flats, these commonly targeted groups are far less useful in reflecting overall community patterns. -

Ghazala1 1(EEAA,Ras Muhammad National Park, South Sinai, Egypt) 2(Marine Science Department, Faculty of Science, Suez Canal University, Egypt) Abstract: Family Acroporidae (seven coral species) were studied in the northern Red Sea (Ras Muhammad National Park, South Sinai) to know their suitability for transplantation and to determine the fragments growth rate and to know the space that colonies occupied in the structure. Coral fragments were collected and transplanted onto a Fixed modular tray nursery made from PVC connected to rectangular frame-tables. Survival and growth rates were assessed; more than 58% of the fragments survived after 14 months. The overall growth rate was 0.940 ± 0.049 mm/month. The Acroporidae showed a significant positive relationship between growth rate and colony size. Some species showed more than duplicate in ecological volume after 14 months of transplantation. Voolstra 1,7 The global decline of coral reefs heightens the need to understand how corals respond to changing environmental conditions. Corals are metaorganisms, so-called holobionts, and 1234567890():,; restructuring of the associated bacterial community has been suggested as a means of holobiont adaptation. However, the potential for restructuring of bacterial communities across coral species in different environments has not been systematically investigated. Here we show that bacterial community structure responds in a coral host-specific manner upon cross-transplantation between reef sites with differing levels of anthropogenic impact. The coral Acropora hemprichii harbors a highly flexible microbiome that differs between each level of anthropogenic impact to which the corals had been transplanted. In contrast, the micro- biome of the coral Pocillopora verrucosa remains remarkably stable. Interestingly, upon cross- transplantation to unaffected sites, we find that microbiomes become indistinguishable from back-transplanted controls, suggesting the ability of microbiomes to recover. It remains unclear whether differences to associate with bacteria flexibly reflects different holobiont adaptation mechanisms to respond to environmental change. Sanganeb Atoll, Sudan A Marine National Park with Scientific Criteria for Ecologically Significant Marine Areas Abstract Sanganeb Marine National Park (SMNP) is one of the most unique reef structures in the Sudanese Red Sea whose steep slopes rise from a sea floor more than 800 m deep. It is located at approximately 30km north-east of Port Sudan city at 19° 42 N, 37° 26 E. The Atoll is characterized by steep slopes on all sides. The dominated coral reef ecosystem harbors significant populations of fauna and flora in a stable equilibrium with numerous endemic and endangered species. The reefs are distinctive of their high number of species, diverse number of habitats, and high endemism. The atoll has a diverse coral fauna with a total of 86 coral species being recorded. The total number of species of algae, polychaetes, fish, and Cnidaria has been confirmed as occurring at Sanganeb Atoll. Research activities are currently being conducted; yet several legislative decisions are needed at the national level in addition to monitoring. Sanganeb Marine National Park (SMNP) is one of the most unique reef structures in the Sudanese Red Sea whose steep slopes rise from a sea floor more than 800 m deep (Krupp, 1990). With the exception of the man-made structures built on the reef flat in the south, there is no dry land at SMNP (Figure 1). Tan Institute of Biology University of the Philippines Diliman ABSTRACT Coral reefs in Eastern Samar, Philippines were badly damaged by super typhoon Haiyan, which left many reefs in a fragmented state – with many branching corals and other coral forms scattered in loose pieces. As part of the efforts to address this problem, we tested the re-attachment of 43 species of coral fragments to sturdy natural substrates in three reef sites in Eastern Samar (Can-usod and Monbon in Lawaan, and Panaloytoyon in Quinapondan). The results revealed that 88% of re-attached coral fragments survived (45% showed positive growth, and 43% survived with partial tissue mortality). Those that showed positive growth exhibited high growth rates. We also found that fragments of some coral species are more fast-growing (e.g., Cyphastrea decadia, Echinopora pacificus, and Millepora tenella) than others (e.g., Porites lobata or Pectinia paeonia). Overall, our results suggest that if Local Government Units (LGUs) invest in the re-attachment of fragmented corals (e.g., reefs damaged by super typhoons or by various human activities such as fishing), then coral reef degradation in the Philippines would have a better chance of recovering. Title: The Effects of Altered Salinity on Settlement and Metamorphosis of Coral Planula Larvae Approved: Robert H. Richmond, Chair, Thesis Committee The effects of altered salinity on settlement and metamorphosis were tested on five species of coral larvae on Guam. Planulae were maintained under salinity levels of 38 %0 to 25 %0, and coral rubble was used as the settlement substratum. Larvae of spawning species and the brooding species had the highest rates of settlement and metamorphosis at 34 %0. When salinity was decreased below normal levels, settlement and survivorship decreased significantly for Acropora danai, A. digitifera, Goniastrea retiformis, Leptoria phlygia and Pocillopora damicomis. Larvae of P. damicornis showed a 75 % decrease in settlement at 25 %0; A. danai and A. digitifera showed a 100 % decrease in settlement at 25 %0. Tn addition, larval mortality for the two Acroporids was more than 95 % at 25 %0. GOlliastrea retiformis larvae exhibited an increase in settlement from 15 % to 22 % when salinity levels were raised from 34 %0 to 38 %0 respectively. In contrast, L. phlygia larvae showed only a 2 % settlement rate when salinity was increased to 38 %0. There appears to be a relationship between site selection and salinity sensitivity for these species. For all species in this study, decreased salinity affects larval swimming behavior by influencing their ability to settle and metamorphose. Reduced salinity associated with heavy rains and runoff from land during low tides can significantly affect recruitment of corals. -

Depending upon the natural and human threats, several species are under threat towards extinction. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) was founded to compute the status of floral and faunal lives to protect them against degradation by means of several categorizations. Threatened species is the combination of three categories such as Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable which are very near to extinction stage. Depending upon five criterions 228 species of scleractinian corals were categorized under threatened species. Andaman and Nicobar Islands harbors 121 species of threatened corals comprising of 8.26% Endangered (EN) and 90.90% Vulnerable (VU) species. Only one species of scleractinian coral under Critically Endangered (CR) category was reported from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Among them, 44.62% species are common in occurrence and distribution in Andaman and Nicobar Islands which implies the enriched marine biodiversity of these areas.
