First, we expand earlier analyses of whether religious pluralities lead to more or less conflict. Second, we assess the apparent demographic anomaly that high popula- tion growth is often found not to contribute to higher levels of violent religious persecution and conflict. We introduce a new demographic measure that captures the net effect of the demographic transition rather than just recent population growth dynamics, thus concentrating on differences in long-term population growth patterns. -

We contend that fundamentalist Sunni Muslims employ suicide attacks as a political tool in sectarian violence and this targeting dynamic marks a central facet of the phenomenon today. We conduct a large-n analysis, evaluating an original dataset of 6,224 suicide attacks during the period of 1980 through 2016. A series of logistic regression analyses at the incidence level shows that, ceteris paribus, sectarian violence between Sunni Muslims and non-Sunni Muslims emerges as a substantive, signifi- cant, and positive predictor of suicide attacks. -

EGYPT U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom: 2013 Annual Report Bottom Line: Despite some progress during a turbulent political transition, the Egyptian government has failed or been slow to protect religious minorities, particularly Coptic Orthodox Christians from violence. It continues to prosecute, convict, and imprison Egyptian citizens, including Copts and dissenting Muslims, for “contempt” or “defamation” of religion. The newly-adopted constitution includes several problematic provisions relevant to religious freedom and related human rights. Despite some improvements, the Egyptian government continues to engage in and tolerate systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of freedom of religious freedom. It is unclear how much the current government could do to effectively address the ongoing violence and continuing climate of impunity in the country even if it had the genuine desire to do so. Discriminatory and repressive laws and policies remain that restrict freedom of thought, conscience and religion or belief. For the third year in a row, USCIRF recommends in 2013 that Egypt be designated a “country of particular concern,” or CPC, under the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA). Background In January 2012, the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) announced it would be lifting the Emergency Law except in cases of “thuggery,” although it did not define that term. Because Egypt has long operated under a state of emergency, the government has had the option to hear cases involving terrorism or drug trafficking in state security courts rather than criminal courts. Finally on May 31 the State of Emergency expired and the Emergency Law was lifted completely. The Emergency Law restricted many human rights, including freedom of religion or belief, as well as freedom of expression, assembly, and association. -

Part of this work is research into the phenomenon of extremism derived particularly from the abuse of Islam. This publication is the most comprehensive analysis of such extremism to date and utilises data on terrorism in a new way to show: 1. Violent extremism connected with the perversion of Islam today is global, affecting over 60 countries. 2. Now more than 120 different groups worldwide are actively engaged in this violence. 3. These groups are united by an ideology that shares certain traits and beliefs. 4. The ideology and the violence associated with it have been growing over a period of decades stretching back to the 1980s or further, closely correlated with the development of the Muslim Brotherhood into a global movement, the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and—in the same year—the storming by extremist insurgents of Islam’s holy city of Mecca. -

Talking to the Muslim world: how, and with whom? AMITAI ETZIONI* One challenge, wrapped in a bigger one The struggle against terrorism in the Middle East has led to a quest to find ways to counter the normative appeal1 of violent extremists, especially the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). There is widespread recognition that ISIS has a very effective normative position, as indicated by the facts that it strongly motivates its rank and file; has persuaded many thousands of young Muslims from around the world to join its ranks; and has considerable appeal in parts of the Muslim world. Several analyses of ISIS’s normative appeal focus on its ability to exploit social media; however, much of its appeal derives not from the tools and platforms it leverages but from the underlying message that it broad- casts. Boaz Ganor, the executive director of the International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism, writes: ‘IS [ISIS] captivates these young people, not only by virally disseminating its messages of victory and barbarism, but also, and perhaps mainly, by inviting them to join an alternative conceptual system.’2 Psychologist John Horgan finds that ISIS recruits typically feel ‘a very, very strong moral pull ... [a] passionate need to right some perceived wrong, to address some sort of injustice, to restore honor to those from whom it’s been taken’.3 Although the vast majority of the Muslim world opposes ISIS, there are significant minori- ties in several very disparate countries that seem to support the organization. A Pew Global Attitudes Survey in spring 2015 found that 20 per cent of Nigerian Muslims and 12 per cent of Malaysian Muslims had ‘favorable’ opinions of ISIS, with corresponding proportions for Pakistan and Senegal standing at 9 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.4 Although small minorities, these percentages repre- * I am indebted to David Kroeker-Maus for extensive research assistance on this article. -

Otherwise ordinary Catholics tortured their Huguenot neighbors to death and then afterwards mutilated their corpses, sometimes feeding the disfigured remains to farm animals. Catholic children elicited applause from their coreligionists as they killed adult Huguenots by tearing them to pieces. Huguenots assaulted Catholic priests during the Mass, pillaged Catholic churches, and desecrated the Host. Indeed, as the sectarian duel increased in frequency and intensity, a man could be killed for calling someone a Huguenot; both sides used religion to rationalize the assassinations of dukes and kings. -

November 2020 October 2020 From the late 1960s until 1998, Northern Ireland suffered through The Troubles: an era of severe political and September 2020 sectarian violence, which was particularly brutal in the cities of Derry and Belfast. It emerged from a tormented August 2020 national history as a call for more civil rights by the area’s Catholic minority. At its heart was, and is, a bitter July 2020 debate over whether Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom or rejoin Ireland as a united June 2020 republic. Born in the late 1950s, artist David Sandlin grew up in Belfast during the 1960s and 70s, as the violence May 2020 drastically increased. Sandlin’s family was Protestant, but siblings had married into Catholic families. Due to continued threats Sandlin’s family moved to rural Alabama in the United States. -

Religious Terrorism
6 O Religious Terrorism errorism in the name of religion has become the predominant model for Tpolitical violence in the modern world. This is not to suggest that it is the only model because nationalism and ideology remain as potent catalysts for extremist behavior. However, religious extremism has become a central issue for the global community. In the modern era, religious terrorism has increased in its frequency, scale of violence, and global reach. At the same time, a relative decline has occurred in secular terrorism. The old ideologies of class conflict, anticolonial liberation, and secular nationalism have been challenged by a new and vigorous infusion of sec- tarian ideologies. Grassroots extremist support for religious violence has been most widespread among populations living in repressive societies that do not per- mit demands for reform or other expressions of dissent. What is religious terrorism? What are its fundamental attributes? Religious ter- rorism is a type of political violence motivated by an absolute belief that an other- worldly power has sanctioned—and commanded—terrorist violence for the greater glory of the faith. Acts committed in the name of the faith will be forgiven by the otherworldly power and perhaps rewarded in an afterlife. In essence, one’s religious faith legitimizes violence as long as such violence is an expression of the will of one’s deity. Table 6.1 presents a model that compares the fundamental characteristics of religious and secular terrorism. The discussion in this chapter will review the -
