Loke: No more restrictions on foreign vessels carrying out undersea cable repairs by Martin Carvalho, Hemananthani Sivanandam, Rahimy Rahim, and Tarrence Tan KUALA LUMPUR: The government has decided to exempt the cabotage policy on foreign vessels carrying out undersea cable repair work, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. "The government's main consideration is to increase Malaysia's competitiveness in attracting foreign investors, including Facebook, Google, and Amazon, who wish to construct undersea cables as well as data centres on land. "The move will not only attract investment but also bring about more job opportunities while expanding growth of the domestic telecommunications and Internet industry," he said, when answering a question raised by Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil (PH-Lembah Pantai) in Parliament on Thursday (April 11). The move, he added, would to make the nation a more attractive hub for telecommunication companies who had previously shied away due to red tape stemming from the cabotage policy. "Usually, it will take 27 days to get the regulatory permits, but we estimate it will be cut down to 14 days," he said. The exemption, he said, came into effect on April 1 under Section 65(U) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 following a gazette on March 28. Loke told lawmakers the move would not affect local shipping companies as undersea cable repair work requires specialised vessels which were lacking here. Later in the Parliament lobby, Loke said Malaysia currently has 16 underwater international cable networks and nine domestic cable networks located at cable landing stations nationwide. Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo hailed the move, saying it would boost confidence among investors from the telecommunications sector. "With the gazettement, it will make Malaysia as one of the top priority for them to bring their cables in Malaysia," he added. The cabotage policy has been in place since the 1980s, which requires all domestic transshipment of goods to be made using Malaysian vessels. .

The party youth chief then turned aggressive: "If we vote for Umno, it means that we accept Umno's continued oppression of us and allow the party to continue its extreme racial statements and behaviour." A total of 134 more PPS members will be released by midnight, lawyer Gobind Singh Deo said this afternoon. Gobind said the documentation was being done to secure the release of the members. He was accompanied by 21 lawyers from DAP, PKR and the Bar Council’s Legal Aid Centre and they managed to get into a sessions court set up for the matter at the Northeast District police headquarters on Jalan Patani about 12.30pm today. "The police applied to remand them for four days, but since they needed to prepare the documentation, the detainees will be released, temporarily, on police bail today. "The sessions court judge heard the application by the detainees to seek their release," Gobind said. However, the lawyers were not informed about the actual reason for the remand. Sessions judge Mohamad Izwan presided over the matter, while police officer ASP Karuna applied for the remand. The lawyers came out about 3pm and were greeted by supporters who clapped happily upon hearing about the pending release of the detainees. Exact charge yet to be specified According to Gobind, the detainees are being investigated under Section 43 of the 1966 Societies Act, but the exact charge is yet to be specified. Earlier, 21 PPS members - seven women and 14 senior citizens over the age 60 - were released on police bail, after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng negotiated with the police for their release last night.

The re-election was ordered by RoS after several disgruntled members claimed that the election in December last year was not properly conducted after the party announced that a glitch had resulted in the wrong candidate being elected to the CEC.
