Philosophy, Education and the corruption of youth- from Socrates to Islamic extremists TINA (A.C.) BESLEY University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Introduction Since the days of the Ancient Greeks citizens, city fathers and philosophers have acknowledged the category ‘youth’ as a distinctive life stage and have vitally concerned themselves with the moral constitution of youth. They have argued over their wellbeing and their education and how best to mould as responsible citizens. Youth has been considered a ‘dangerous age’ and transition to adult and citizen; education has been identified with a range of different ways of enhancing or inflaming youth the passions of youth. Depending on ideology and philosophical viewpoint, education has been conceived as a means to incite or prevent revolution, violence and terrorism. Education may in fact be considered a form of indoctrination or political socialization especially when particular regimes set out to politicize notions of culture, religion and national identity. Moreover, teachers can be considered to have considerable impact on student attitudes and actions as the famous case of corruption against Socrates in Ancient Greece. Today both the US and Islamic countries hold teachers to account for providing appropriate moral training. And governments around the world routinely impose performance-related pay regimes based on the assumption of a relationship between teaching and learning. Regardless, teaching is a social activity and depending on many factors including the degree of relationship between teacher and student, the teacher’s charisma, intelligence, knowledge and powers of persuasion, and other influences on a young person (e.g. family, politics, religion) teaching can have either a profound or a limited effect. -

Molung Educational Frontier 15 Facets of Democracy: An Overview Aswasthama Bhakta Kharel, PhD* Abstract Democracy allows the expression of political preferences of citizens in a state. It advocates the rule of law, constraints on executive’s power, and guarantees the provision of civil liberties. It also manages to ensure human rights and fundamental freedoms of people. In democracy, people are supposed to exercise their freely expressed will. Ordinary people hold the political power of the state and rule directly or through elected representatives inside a democratic form of government. Democracy is a participatory and liberal way of governing a country. Different countries in the world have been practicing various models of democracy. There remains the participation of people in government and policy-making of the state under democracy. But when the majority can pull the strings of the society without there being legislation for protecting the rights of the minority, it may create a severe risk of oppression. Many countries of the world at the present time are facing democratic deficits. In several countries, the democratic practices are not adequately regulated and governed, as a result, the rise of violations of rules of law is observed. Even a few countries practicing democracy are not living peacefully. This situation has put a significant question about the need and sustainability of democracy. Democracy is a widely used system of governance beyond having several challenges. Here the concept, origin, models, dimensions, practices, challenges, solutions, and future of democracy are dealt to understand the structure of ideal democracy. The Age of Absolutism and Constitutionalism in Europe: AP World History: Overview: ∙ Karl Marx noted that all history is cyclical and a response to a previous period, this dialectical notion teaches us to examine patterns and trends with the purpose of predicting future events. According to Marxist thought history responds logically and materially to the flaws of the previous period. Using our knowledgebase of the previous section…it is clear that the previous age faced great challenges that led to new trends in the following era, trends that included Absolutism and the liberal response; constitutionalism. In dealing with the political, religious, economic, and climatic problems of the day the leaders of state sought more power to deal with problems. The response was a new political philosophy that had been in the works for a millennium; Absolutism. Absolutism gives a monarch absolute or total authority in dealing with the state. This power is absorbed by the Monarch and takes liberties away from elected representatives and citizens. The response (dialectally) is constitutionalism, a system that seeks to enumerate the rights of citizens by limiting the rights and powers of the State. ∙ These political ideas will manifest themselves in several locations; France, Russia, Austria, and Prussia. France: The Model of Absolute Monarchy ∙ The French Monarchy had been in a constant state of evolution since the fall of Rome. Great monarchs had appeared, ideas solidified during the Renaissance, and conflict during the age of religious wars. Henry IV revived the monarchy and laid the framework for the reign of the Great Monarch Louis XIV. -
Ethnic Conflicts & the Informational Dividend of Democracy
ETHNIC CONFLICTS & THE INFORMATIONAL DIVIDEND OF DEMOCRACY∗ Jeremy Laurent-Lucchettiy Dominic Rohnerz Mathias Thoenig§ November 2019 Abstract Prevailing explanations view democracy as an institutional arrangement that solves a class conflict between a rich elite and the rest of population. We study the logic of democratic transition when ethnic tensions are more salient than the poor/rich divide. We build a simple theory where (i) ethnic groups negotiate over allocating the economic surplus and (ii) both military and political mobiliza- tions rest on the unobserved strength of ethnic identity. By eliciting information on mobilization, free and fair elections restore inter-ethnic bargaining efficiency and prevent conflict outbreak. We show that democratic transition can be rationally chosen by autocrats, even if it involves a risk of losing power, as elections reduce the informational rent of the opposition, allowing the legitimately elected ruler to grab more economic surplus. Our setup generates new predictions on the nature of political regime, government tenure, ethnic favoritism and social unrest for ethnically divided countries - all consistent with novel country-level and ethnic group-level panel evidence on democratization in the post-decolonization period. Introduction-Global Constitutionalism from an Interdisciplinary Perspective ANNE PETERS* & KLAUS ARMINGEON** This issue discusses the process and substance of global constitutionalism from an interdisciplinary perspective.' The contributions look at international law and governance through constitutionalist spectacles. These spectacles have normative and empirical-analytical lenses. Seen through the normative lens of lawyers, a con- stitutionalist reading of current international law is, to some extent, an academic artifact. It has a creative moment, even if it only emphasizes certain characteristics of international law. From a legal perspective, such an intellectual construct is nothing unusual. If we accept the hermeneutic premise that a naked meaning of a text, inde- pendent of the reader, does not exist, then the reconstruction of some portions of international law as international constitutional law is just an ordinary hermeneutic exercise. -

It seems to share the character- istics of other "isms": it is neither clearly prescrip- tive nor clearly descriptive; its contours are difficult to discern; its historical roots are diverse and uncer- tain. Legal realist Walton H. Hamilton, who wrote on the subject for the Encyclopedia of the Social Sci- ences, began his article in an ironic vein: "Constitu- tionalism is the name given to the trust which men repose in the power of words engrossed on parchment to keep a government in order." Historians, on the other hand, employ the concept with some confidence in its meaning. -

This led to a crisis in 339 B.C.
