Withering Heights
Withering Heights When one mentions the Presbyterian Church, the name that first comes to mind is that of the Scottish Calvinist clergyman John Knox. This dynamic religious leader of the Protestant Reformation founded the Presbyterian denomination and was at the beginning of his ministry in Edinburgh when he lost his beloved wife Marjorie Bowes. In 1564 he married again, but the marriage received a great deal of attention. This was because she was remotely connected with the royal family, and Knox was almost three times the age of this young lady of only seventeen years. She was Margaret Stewart, daughter of Andrew Stewart, 2nd Lord of Ochiltree. She bore Knox three daughters, of whom Elizabeth became the wife of John Welsh, the famous minister of Ayr. Their daughter Lucy married another clergyman, the Reverend James Alexander Witherspoon. Their descendant, John Knox Witherspoon (son of another Reverend James Alexander Witherspoon), signed the Declaration of Independence on behalf of New Jersey and (in keeping with family tradition) was also a minister, in fact the only minister to sign the historic document. John Knox Witherspoon (1723 – 1794), clergyman, Princeton’s sixth president and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Just like Declaration of Independence signatory John Witherspoon, actress Reese Witherspoon is also descended from Reverend James Alexander Witherspoon and his wife Lucy (and therefore John Knox). The future Academy Award winner, born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon, was born in New Orleans, having made her début appearance at Southern Baptist Hospital on March 22, 1976. New Orleans born Academy Award winning actress, Reese Witherspoon Reese did not get to play Emily Brontë’s Cathy in “Wuthering Heights” but she did portray Becky Sharp in Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair”. -
Legally Blonde: Introduction
Being true to yourself never goes out of style! WINNER BEST NEW MUSICAL 2011 OLIVIER AWARD EDUCATION KIT AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE SEASON • SYDNEY LYRIC LegallyBlonde.com.au facebook.com/ legallyblondemusical @legallyblondeoz Legally Blonde: INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION This teacher’s guide has been developed as a teaching tool to assist teachers who are bringing their students to see the show. This guide is based on Camp Broadway’s StageNOTES, conceived for the original Broadway musical adaptation of Amanda Brown’s 2001 novel and the film released that same year, and has been adapted for use within the UK and Australia. The Australian Education Pack is intended to offer some pathways into the production, and focuses on some of the topics covered in Legally Blonde which may interest students and teachers. It is not an exhaustive analysis of the musical or the production, but instead aims to offer a variety of stimuli for debate, discussion and practical exploration. It is anticipated that the Education Pack will be best utilised after a group of students have seen the production with their teacher, and can engage in an informed discussion based on a sound awareness of the musical. We hope that the information provided here will both enhance the live theatre experience and provide readers with information they may not otherwise have been able to access. Legally Blonde is an uplifting, energising, feel-good show and with that in mind we hope this pack will be enjoyed through equally energising and enjoyable practical work in the classroom and drama studio. 1 Legally Blonde: INTRODUCTION LEgally Blonde Education Pack CONTENTS PAGE INTODUCTION 1. -

INTRODUCTION Almost every woman has had the experience of being trivialized, regarded as if she is just 'some dumb girl,' of whom few productive accomplishments can be expected. When viewed simply as 'some dumb girls,' women are treated dismissively, as if their thoughts or contributions are unlikely to be of value and are unworthy of consideration. 'Some Dumb Girl Syndrome' can arise in deeply personal spheres. A friend once described an instance of this phenomenon: When a hurricane threatened her coastal community, her husband, a military pilot, was ordered to fly his airplane to a base in the Midwest, far from the destructive reach of the impending storm. This left her alone with their two small children. -
Laura Vorreyer Is an Entrepreneur, Who Pioneered the Dog Walking
Laura Vorreyer is an entrepreneur, who pioneered the dog walking industry in Hollywood over 15 years ago, and is the author of the new book, “The Pet Sitter’s Tale.” She is the owner of the pet care company Your Dog’s Best Friend, a premier dog walking and pet-sitting business in Los Angeles. Laura has taught pet-sitting and dog walking classes in Los Angeles and is also a passionate advocate for animal rights. She remains dedicated to pet rescue. Laura’s road to pet-sitting began when she packed up her belongings and moved from Chicago to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a make-up artist for big-time movie stars. Rather than dabbing powder on the pert noses of up-and-coming starlets, she found herself without a union card (something she didn’t know she needed for a career as a make-up artist) and, therefore, couldn’t find work. Moreover, it seemed as if everybody she met was a make-up artist. “There were more make-up artists than actresses in Los Angeles!” she quipped. Before she knew it, in order to just get her foot in that coveted door, she was heading to the set of a seedy adult film to apply make-up in ways she never – ever – expected. It was at this point she started to question her choice in career paths. A chance meeting on the set of a legitimate film led to a life-changing conversation. A well-known comedienne happened to need a dog walker and since Laura loves dogs, her career showering pets with love and care was born. -

Copyright in an Era of Information Overload: Toward the Privileging of Categorizers
Brooklyn Law School BrooklynWorks Faculty Scholarship 1-2007 Copyright in an Era of Information Overload: Toward the Privileging of Categorizers Frank Pasquale Follow this and additional works at: https://brooklynworks.brooklaw.edu/faculty Part of the Science and Technology Law Commons Copyright in an Era of Information Overload: Toward the Privileging of Categorizers Frank Pasquale 60 Vand. L. Rev. 135 (2007) Environmental laws are designed to reduce negative externalities (such as pollution) that harm the natural world. Copyright law should adjust the rights of content creators in order to compensate for the ways they reduce the usefulness of the information environment as a whole. Every new work created contributes to the store of expression, but also makes it more difficult to find whatever work one wants. "Search costs" have been well- documented in information economics and addressed by trademark law. Copyright law should take information overload externalities like search costs into account in its treatment of alleged copyright infringers whose work merely attempts to index, organize, categorize, or review works by providing small samples of them. These categorizers are not "'free riding" off the labor of copyright holders. Rather, they are creating the navigational tools and filters that help consumers make sense of the ocean of expression copyright holders have created. The new scholarship of cultural environmentalism lays the groundwork for a better understanding of the costs, as well as the benefits, of copyrighted expression. Any expression that signals something to one who wants exposure to it may constitute noise to thousands of others. By modeling information overload as an externality imposed by copyrighted works generally, this article attempts to provide a new economic justification for more favorable legal treatment of categorizers, indexers, and reviewers. -

Legally Blonde – Beauty Shop
LEGALLY BLONDE INT. BEAUTY OASIS - DAY A downscale, blue-collar salon, with five hair chairs and two manicure stations. Old ladies and young waitresses get perms. PAULETTE (early 40s, lower-middle class, hard-edged, plus-sized) looks up as a defeated Elle sinks into the manicure chair. The manicure station is plastered with pictures of RUFUS, a big, slobbering pit-bull. PAULETTE Bad day? Elle holds out her hands. Paulette dips them into a dish of soapy water. ELLE You can't even imagine. PAULETTE Spill. Elle lets it all out in a rush. ELLE I worked really hard to get into law school. I blew off Spring Break and Greek Week to study for the LSAT’s, I completely neglected my Homecoming Queen duties, I hired a Coppola to direct my admissions video -- all so I could get my boyfriend Warner back and now he's engaged to this awful girl Sarah so it was all for nothing! I wish I’d never even come to Harvard. Paulette dries Elle's hands and begins filing. PAULETTE After you went to all that trouble? ELLE Well, what am I supposed to do? He's engaged! She's got the family six- carat on her bony, unpolished finger. PAULETTE You're asking the wrong girl. I'm with my guy eight years and then one day it's "I met someone else. Move out." ELLE (horrified) What'd you do? PAULETTE Cried a lot and gained twenty pounds. Dewey kept the trailer and my precious baby Rufus. I got jackcrap. She looks at a picture of the pit-bull. -
