Nationally recognized Alexis Willson, will serve as a guest artist. As a professional dancer she has performed classically and commercially all over the world. Alexis earned her B.F.A. in drama from the prestigious Carnegie-Mellon University. After retiring from dancing, she acted in commercials and later became a casting associate. Alexis has written and published poetry, a full length musical, made contributions to a variety of published works, and self-published her Melanye White Dixon recent memoir, Not So Black and White. With the return of the Northwest Florida Ballet Symphony Orchestra and FIVE productions at venues all along the Emerald Coast, we have proven our commitment to elevating the performing arts in the communities we serve. As friends of NFB and valued patrons of the arts, we have listened to your feedback and identified new performance locations and expanded use of others to continue bringing you the world-class productions our organization is known for. Through our expanded partnership with Grand Boulevard, we will present Giselle to the community as a free outdoor performance in Grand Park in October. In December we bring back the electrifying Lightwire Theater with A Very Electric Christmas for two performances at the Destin United Methodist Church Life Center. -
The Joffrey Ballet's 10 New Ballet Dancers Span Six Countries
The Joffrey Ballet’s 10 new ballet dancers span six countries, including Russia, South Korea, and Colombia. Their ages range from 19 to 26. Mixed backgrounds and ages aside, they're now all united by one thread: Joffrey Artistic Director Ashley Wheater saw something in each that helped them make the cut among several hundred applicants. “I happen to agree with Robert Joffrey that a dancer doesn’t come with one look or one skin color and I think a true dancer comes in all different shapes and sizes,” said the Scottish-born Wheater. “When I look at the company, it’s just such a beautiful tapestry of people.” In assembling the diverse group, Wheater – who joined Joffrey just before the death of founding artistic director Gerald Arpino – stays in line with past choices of the company, which, under Arpino, embraced both atypical ballet bodies and bold, plot-less ballets. Founded by Robert Joffrey and Arpino in 1956, the Chicago company touts itself as a school of “firsts” – the first classical dance company to commission a ballet based on rock music, the first to have a major motion picture based on it (Robert Altman’s The Company), and the first U.S. ballet company to livestream video of a rehearsal on YouTube. Joffrey’s most recent addition reflects young dancers who must contend with their own newly emerging public identities almost as readily as they practice their turnout. Last year, Valeriia Chaykina, a dancer from Russia, was cast in an ongoing series from Teen Vogue. In 2011, Colombian-born Joan Sebastián Zamora starred in the documentary First Position, which followed six young ballet dancers preparing for New York City’s Youth American Grand Prix, one of the world’s largest ballet competitions. -

By doing so, you have supported live arts which, in of it itself, is important. But more than that, you have chosen to participate in a unique program. Each year, Amy identifies a theme and invites stunning artists, that she thinks have a pertinent message, to create dances for Bay Area audiences -- dancers, choreographers and composers that we wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. This year, in Sketch 5 | Stirred, IMAGERY is mixing it up. Seiwert has been collaborating with ODC co-artistic director KT Nelson on a new work. The artists edited each other’s work and interrupted each other’s process, in hopes of discovering something entirely new. This type of collaboration is extremely rare in ballet, and completely new to Seiwert. During an intensive creative process in residence at Zaccho Studio, Seiwert and Nelson worked together on creating a series of solos that explore the theme of isolation. The choreographers addressed questions such as: How does one consider the idea of isolation when not in isolation? How does it feel to be isolated in community? Finally, given the choreographers’ different working styles and aesthetics, an inherent focus of the project was the relationship between process and content. -

Sergei Dorensky has been awarded numerous international prizes over the years and eventually went on to develop his career outside the Soviet Union. Sergei Dorensky was also named “People’s Artist of Russia” in 1989 and received the Order for Merit to the Fatherland in 2008. The vision of the Founders of the Academy, the late Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Gary Graffman Han Moon, can be understood in the calligraphy. -
