City street are clogged with taxi’s and for-hire vehicles, subway platforms are packed with straphangers waiting for delayed trains and buses barely travel faster than pedestrians. The bureaucracy of City and State government in the region causes piecemeal improvements which do not keep up with the state of disrepair. Bus service is particularly poor, moving at rates incomparable with the rest of the country. New York has recently made successful efforts at improving bus speeds, but only so much can be done amidst a city of gridlock. Bus systems around the world faced similar challenges and successfully implemented improvements. A toolbox of near-immediate and long- term options are at New York’s disposal dealing directly with bus service as well indirect causes of poor bus service. The failing subway system has prompted public discussion concerning bus service. A significant cause of poor service in New York is congestion. A number of measures are capable of improving congestion and consequently, bus service. Due to the city’s limited capacity at implementing short-term solutions, the most highly problematic routes should receive priority. Routes with slow speeds, high rates of bunching and high ridership are concentrated in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn which also cater to the most subway riders. -

PART 11. DETAILED REPORT. NEW CONSTRUCTION WORK PAID FOR OUT OF CORPORATE STOCK. Shore Road. The contract for the completion of the sea wall along the Shore Road, between Latting Place and Bay Ridge Avenue, and between 92d Street and Fort Hamilton Avenue, which was begun in 1914, was practically completed during 1915. The work consisted of constructing 6,624 linear feet of granite ashlar and concrete sea wall, furnishing and placing 46,000 tons of rip-rap and 350,000 cubic yards of earth fill. The contract for the furnishing and deposit- ing of 250,000 cubic yards of earth fill along the Shore Road, between 94th Street and Fort Hamilton Avenue, was begun during June, 1915. The work of filling in has been more than 50 per cent. completed this year. Dreamland Park. The contract for the construction of seven timber groynes along the beach front of Dreamland Park was completed during May, 1915. The cost of the work was $11,688.60. The purpose has been to stop the washing away of the beach. Records show that since 1874 more than 30 acres of public beach at Coney Island has been lost in this way. At one point, near the foot of the Ocean Boulevard, the Shore line has receded 1,100 feet. Since these groynes have been completed they have protected the beach from erosion and have also reclaimed considerable beach lands. In the spring they will be built up further and more land reclaimed. The contract for the removal of the old timber steamboat pier in front of Dreamland Park was begun during May, 1915. -

Trinity Church Cemetery & Mausoleum
TRINITY CHURCH CEMETERY & MAUSOLEUM— A WALK THROUGH HISTORY Welcome to Trinity Church Cemetery & Mausoleum—a unique historical site and a quiet sanctuary. This guide provides a tour of the grounds. The cemetery offers a serene place to walk, views of the Hudson River, and is the final resting place of many notable people. The Cemetery was established in 1842 by the parish of Trinity Church. It was opened after burials were prohibited in Lower Manhattan due to outbreaks of cholera and other diseases. The site’s earlier history dates back to 1776, when the Battle of Fort Washington was waged here during the American Revolution. As you walk the grounds, take note of some of the interesting people interred here (highlighted on the map). One recognizable name is John James Audubon, the naturalist and artist. His estate, Minniesland, was located nearby, and Audubon is buried in the Eastern division, behind the Church of the Intercession. His memorial is a tall distinctive Celtic cross adorned with reliefs of animals including deer, buffalo, and elk. Other notable names include: Alfred Tennyson Dickens, son of Charles Dickens; John Jacob Astor, industrialist; Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man; and Clement Clarke Moore, author of the beloved poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas. (also know as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas). Trinity Church Cemetery & Mausoleum offers the only active community mausoleum in Manhattan. It is operated as an outreach ministry of Trinity Church Wall Street, an Episcopal parish in Lower Manhattan made up of Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel.
