Howard and Tipton Counties, although now rich in fertile fields and gardens, schools and churches, furnishing to the world more than a pro- portionate share of commerce, with an educational development and ad- vancement that proudly stand in the front ranks, are yet in their infancy. There are now living among us a few faithful pioneers who saw the dense forests first broken, the fields first opened to Anglo-Saxon civilization, education and religion. To write of and about such a people is certainly delightful. To able and faithful hands has been assigned this pleasant duty, but to me in this opening chapter is referred the sadder task of pronouncing the funeral notes of two widely different peoples, who once occupied and cultivated portions of the soil of each county-first, the Mound-Builders, secondly, the Indians-the former extinct many gener- ations before Europe opened her eyes upon America, the latter now " reading their doom in the setting sun." Upon the discovery of America, nearly four hundred years ago, the re- mains of their ancient earthworks, mounds, moats and forts were scattered from Mexico all along the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, and thence to the lake regions north. The Indians knew nothing of their age, purpose, or cause of construction.

    Phases of Southeastern Indiana History By MISS VIDA NEWSOM,Columbus. (Presented at a meeting of the Jennings County Historical society, August 19, 1922, on occasion of Vernon Homecoming.) It has been interesting to learn something of the accomp- lishments and plans for future usefulness of your county his- torical society. The history of Jennings county, in general, is more or less characteristic of that of other counties in this vicinity and of the entire state. There are, however, several outstanding historical features in this section of Indiana, which were of such considerable significance in the making of our great state, which entered so forcibly into the lives, the early struggles and hardships of our forebears, the pioneers, that they well deserve special mention on this occa- sion. The topic assigned me for discussion, “Phases of South- eastern Indiana History”, affords a wealth of material. So numerous are the aspects of history that have contributed to the development of our great commonweealth in South- eastern Indiana alone, that it: would seem that we of this generation have, indeed, come a long way, and I have realized anew in making this study, and perhaps more forcibly than ever before, how much we owe to future generations if we are to prove worthy of the trust that has been imposed upon us by our ancestors, the Indiana pioneers. But in any retrospective glance of this subject our atten- tion usually reverts, first of all, to the aboriginal inhabitants of this country, to the American Indian. If we are kindly dis- posed and just in this reflection we think of him first in his native state, before he was confronted with the necessity of battling for his home as a result of the coming of the white man who was ever encroaching upon his territory.

    CHAIRMEN OF SENATE STANDING COMMITTEES [Table 5-3] 1789–present INTRODUCTION The following is a list of chairmen of all standing Senate committees, as well as the chairmen of select and joint committees that were precursors to Senate committees. (Other special and select committees of the twentieth century appear in Table 5-4.) Current standing committees are highlighted in yellow. The names of chairmen were taken from the Congressional Directory from 1816–1991. Four standing committees were founded before 1816. They were the Joint Committee on ENROLLED BILLS (established 1789), the joint Committee on the LIBRARY (established 1806), the Committee to AUDIT AND CONTROL THE CONTINGENT EXPENSES OF THE SENATE (established 1807), and the Committee on ENGROSSED BILLS (established 1810). The names of the chairmen of these committees for the years before 1816 were taken from the Annals of Congress. This list also enumerates the dates of establishment and termination of each committee. These dates were taken from Walter Stubbs, Congressional Committees, 1789–1982: A Checklist (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1985). There were eleven committees for which the dates of existence listed in Congressional Committees, 1789–1982 did not match the dates the committees were listed in the Congressional Directory. The committees are: ENGROSSED BILLS, ENROLLED BILLS, EXAMINE THE SEVERAL BRANCHES OF THE CIVIL SERVICE, Joint Committee on the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, LIBRARY, PENSIONS, PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, RETRENCHMENT, REVOLUTIONARY CLAIMS, ROADS AND CANALS, and the Select Committee to Revise the RULES of the Senate. For these committees, the dates are listed according to Congressional Committees, 1789– 1982, with a note next to the dates detailing the discrepancy.

Various reasons for these removals have been given by history writers. Some of the reasons usually found include the following: Because of Black Hawk's War the settlers were afraid of the Indians and wanted them removed; in order to build canals and roads the Indians' lands were needed; the removal of the Indians was a natural result of the popu- lation increase in Indiana; the Indians were removed because of trouble which developed between the races; and so on.

Hill”” Before the end of his first term in 1831 Senator William Hendricks’ nonpartisan stance was beginning to alienate per- sons in each of the emerging political parties. Some of his opponents in Indiana and elsewhere attempted for more than a year to prevent his reelection in 1830. The Adams-Clay faction condemned him for supporting senatorial confirma- tion of President Andrew Jackson’s appointments. Jackson- ians criticized him for not being a thorough going Jacksonian in legislative matters.l Indiana political parties, however, were loose coalitions for winning elections and controlling patronage rather than organizations of persons holding unique political views. Jack- sonianism consisted of loyalty to a person more than ad- herence to a program. Its rivers and lakes teemed with edible fish; its great forests abounded with deer, elk, bears and raccoons; its vast plains and prairies were filled with herds of buffalo that existed up almost to the close of the eighteenth century; every swamp and morass was filled with countless thousands of geese, ducks, swan and cranes, and rodents like the beaver and other animals furnished the red man with the warmest of raiment in the coldest winter. To give an idea of the vast wealth of this domain in fur-bearing animals alone, it may be taken into account that in the year 1818 the American Fur Company, under the control of John Jacob Astor, with its headquarters at Mackinaw, had in its employ about four hundred clerks and traders, together with about two thousand French-Canadian voyageurs, who roamed all the rivers and lakes of the Indian country from the British dominions on the north, to as far west as the Missouri river.1 The “out- fits” of this company had trading posts on the Illinois, and all its tributaries; on the Muskegon, Grand, Kalamazoo and other rivers in Michigan; on the line of the old Pottawatomi trail from the Wabash country to Post Chicago, and in the neighborhood of the Beaver lake regions in northern Indi- ana, and at many other points.

    The History of Tippecanoe County Compiled by Quinten Robinson, Tippecanoe County Historian THE SETTING Tippecanoe County, located in west-central Indiana, is about 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis and 100 miles southeast of Chicago. Tippecanoe County is 21 miles east to west and 24 miles north to south and Lafayette, the county seat, is situated on the banks of the Wabash nearly in the center. About one-half the surface consists of broad, fertile, and nearly level plains. The balance consists of gently rolling uplands, steep hillsides or rich alluvial bottoms. Occasional wetlands or bogs are found but those were largely drained by the beginning of the 20th century. The Wabash River flows nearly through the middle of Tippecanoe County from northeast to southwest. Tributaries to the Wabash River that drain the north and west parts of Tippecanoe County are the Tippecanoe River, Burnett Creek, Indian Creek, and Little Pine Creek. Draining the south and east parts of the county are Sugar Creek, Buck Creek, North, South and Middle Forks of the Wildcat Creek, Wea Creek, and Flint Creek. Besides Lafayette, cities and towns in Tippecanoe County are West Lafayette, the home of Purdue University, Battle Ground, West Point, Otterbein, Dayton, Clarks Hill, Romney, Stockwell, Americus, Colburn & Buck Creek. In 2010 county population was set at 172,780 PREHISTORIC TIPPECANOE COUNTY The terrain, the Wabash River, and the creeks you see today in Tippecanoe County came to their present condition about 10,000 years ago as the last continental glacier retreated northward leaving a vastly different landscape than what had existed before the advance of the ice sheets began over 700,000 years ago.

    Indian Removal and the Transformation of Northern Indiana THOMAS J. CAMPION n 1907, Hoosier cartoonist John T. McCutcheon created his famous I“Injun Summer” fable for the Chicago Tribune . The Tribune contin - ued to reprint the popular piece every fall until 1992, when the paper withdrew it because of readers’ growing discomfort with its portrayal of Native Americans. The two-panel cartoon, with accompanying text, depicts an old man and a little boy sitting in front of a cornfield , filled with harvested shocks, as darkness falls. The old man spins a yarn in which the field turns into a dancing ground for the “sperrits” of long- departed Indians. According to the old man, the Indians “all went away and died, so they ain’t no more left.” 1 The Indians had not died out and not all of them went away. They were, however, largely absent from the land, with those who remained marginalized and apparently out of sight to McCutcheon. The cartoonist had grown up in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in the 1870s, only a generation or two removed from their presence. Indeed, __________________________ Thomas J.
