De Rham Cohomology 1. Definition of De Rham Cohomology Let X be an open subset of the plane. If we denote by C0(X) the set of smooth (i. e. infinitely differentiable functions) on X and C1(X), the smooth 1-forms on X (i. e. expressions of the form fdx + gdy where f; g 2 C0(X)), we have natural differntiation map d : C0(X) !C1(X) given by @f @f f 7! dx + dy; @x @y usually denoted by df. The kernel for this map (i. e. set of f with df = 0) is called the zeroth De Rham Cohomology of X and denoted by H0(X). Mike Garkie Math 4010 – History of Math UCD Denver 4/1/08 Biography Paper – Georg Cantor Few mathematicians are house-hold names; perhaps only Newton and Euclid would qualify. But there is a second tier of mathematicians, those whose names might not be familiar, but whose discoveries are part of everyday math. Examples here are Napier with logarithms, Cauchy with limits and Georg Cantor (1845 – 1918) with sets. In fact, those who superficially familier with Georg Cantor probably have two impressions of the man: First, as a consequence of thinking about sets, Cantor developed a theory of the actual infinite. And second, that Cantor was a troubled genius, crippled by Freudian conflict and mental illness. The first impression is fundamentally true. Cantor almost single-handedly overturned the Aristotle’s concept of the potential infinite by developing the concept of transfinite numbers. And, even though Bolzano and Frege made significant contributions, “Set theory … is the creation of one person, Georg Cantor.” [4] The second impression is mostly false. Cantor certainly did suffer from mental illness later in his life, but the other emotional baggage assigned to him is mostly due his early biographers, particularly the infamous E.T. Bell in Men Of Mathematics [7]. In the racially charged atmosphere of 1930’s Europe, the sensational story mathematician who turned the idea of infinity on its head and went crazy in the process, probably make for good reading. The drama of the controversy over Cantor’s ideas only added spice. 1 Fortunately, modern scholars have corrected the errors and biases in older biographies. -

Montgomery–Smith,† and Sadahiro Saeki‡ 1 Introduction Transference theory for Lp spaces is a powerful tool with many fruitful applications to sin- gular integrals, ergodic theory, and spectral theory of operators [4, 5]. These methods afford a unified approach to many problems in diverse areas, which before were proved by a variety of methods. The purpose of this paper is to bring about a similar approach to spaces of measures. Our main transference result is motivated by the extensions of the classical F.&M. Riesz Theorem due to Bochner [3], Helson-Lowdenslager [10, 11], de Leeuw-Glicksberg [6], Forelli [9], and others. It might seem that these extensions should all be obtainable via transference methods, and indeed, as we will show, these are exemplary illustrations of the scope of our main result. It is not straightforward to extend the classical transference methods of Calder´on, Coif- man and Weiss to spaces of measures. First, their methods make use of averaging techniques and the amenability of the group of representations. The averaging techniques simply do not work with measures, and do not preserve analyticity. Secondly, and most importantly, their techniques require that the representation is strongly continuous. For spaces of mea- sures, this last requirement would be prohibitive, even for the simplest representations such as translations. Instead, we will introduce a much weaker requirement, which we will call ‘sup path attaining’. By working with sup path attaining representations, we are able to prove a new transference principle with interesting applications. For example, we will show how to derive with ease generalizations of Bochner’s theorem and Forelli’s main result. -
